# Faverdale: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Avoid It?

AdBlue already in the diesel tank? In that case set this page down for now, keep your ignition and motor off, and phone 0333 366 0103.

A drain and a full flush, done just where your vehicle stands around Faverdale, is normally what it takes if found before the engine runs.

If you are reading before it has happened, the rest of this page is about why it occurs and how to make sure it does not.

## AdBlue in a diesel vehicle, and its separate tank

Plenty of current diesels on the roads round Faverdale and Archdeacon Newton carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to your engine.

AdBlue goes to your exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to clean it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Every tank comes with a filler of its own.

Under one flap, side by side: that is the arrangement on many cars. Elsewhere, AdBlue's filler sits under the bonnet or in your boot instead.

The diesel side is filled at the petrol pump all the time.

A driver who has to stop and think where it goes normally fills the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and far less regularly.

The error lives in that gap.

## How AdBlue in your diesel tank happens in Faverdale

Carelessness seldom causes it. What does is three things lining up together.

Hurry follows from the warning. The car tells you as AdBlue runs low, and an empty tank puts the vehicle into limp mode — so the top-up gets done in a rush, before work on a drive off Greensfield Close, or on the way home in the car park outside The White Heifer that Travelled.

New-to-you motors are next, too. Hire cars, new motors and company motors place their fillers in new places, and habit goes for the cap used on the old one.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, so nothing stops the tip after it has started.

Branksome or the middle of Faverdale: it takes the same few seconds either way.

## The AdBlue filler and the diesel filler: telling them apart

Before you pour anything, whether on a drive in Cockerton or a forecourt in Faverdale, check these. They take a few seconds.

- Where it sits misleads; the cap doesn't. AdBlue caps tend to be blue or carry the name "AdBlue" — diesel ones normally don't.

- Look at the size: the smaller neck is, on plenty of motors, the AdBlue one.

- Open the flap and look for a label — many motors show which belongs in each filler just there.

- The handbook says where it lives when the filler isn't next to your diesel cap: the boot, or under the bonnet.

- Check with the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — if you pick up a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park outside North Road.

## Keeping AdBlue out of the diesel tank when you top up

Anywhere across Durham the light comes on, here is a routine for that day.

- Turn off once parked — flat ground, motor stopped, and not rushed by Ainsley Grove on the verge.

- Locate the AdBlue filler, read the cap, and speak the name "AdBlue" aloud while unscrewing it. It seems silly. It does the trick.

- The diesel cap remains on. Where the two share a flap, make sure it's shut before the bottle comes up.

- Stop once the tank fills or the bottle is empty; until then, tip slowly using its built-in spout.

- Close the cap and check again. Make sure your diesel cap was never opened. Only then start the vehicle.

Spot at stage two or three that it has already gone into the diesel side? So stop just there.

Step five is out.

## Faverdale: already put AdBlue in your diesel tank?

What follows is a short order of things, beginning with no starting your engine.

Don't switch your ignition on; on many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

Topping up with diesel will not thin it: instead, AdBlue sinks to the base of the tank, right where the fuel is taken from.

At a forecourt — Morrisons, Shell or any other — the staff will normally help push the vehicle clear, when you ask.

Leave it where it is if you are on your own drive around Faverdale.

Where your engine has been run already, stop safely and turn the vehicle off.

Leave the A1(M) — under a mile out of Faverdale — at the next exit.

Distance counts — a short hop across Faverdale makes a smaller job than driving under 25 miles towards Durham — so tell us roughly how far it went.

## What occurs when we arrive around Faverdale

Anywhere the vehicle came to rest, whether by West Park Academy, near Plover or on your own drive, our van comes to it.

Our technicians ask what was put in, about how much, and whether it's run, because those answers decide the work and our price.

That quote is given over the phone, ahead of any van leaving.

Then that tank is drained and your system flushed thoroughly.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it doesn't wash out on its own — which is why that matters more with AdBlue than with petrol.

Filter flushed or, if needed, swapped; clean diesel in; then a check of the car.

Next we fire it up and confirm it runs properly before we leave.

If your motor hasn't run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once we're there, using pumps that are fine on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night.

You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer.

It's worth looking at your policy while we travel to you: misfuelling cover is included with plenty of policies.

Moving the vehicle isn't needed.

Our technicians drain it where it is — a side street close to Amphitheatre, a lay-by on the way to West Park, a driveway.

Assuming doesn't help at the back of The Comet Comes to Town, close to a border, or somewhere hard to pin down; ring and ask.
