# How It Occurs and How to Prevent It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Feltwell

AdBlue already in your diesel tank? Then set this page aside a moment, leave your ignition and motor off, and ring 0333 366 0103.

In Feltwell, finding it before the motor turns usually means draining and a full flush where it stands.

The rest of this page explains why it happens and how to make sure it doesn't — handy if you are reading ahead of time.

## Why does AdBlue in a diesel car need its own filler?

No single liquid but two: that's how plenty of modern diesels around Feltwell and Brookville run, with diesel for the motor.

AdBlue's own tank keeps it, and from there it is sent to the exhaust, where spraying cleans the gas.

Each tank comes with a filler of its own.

On a lot of vehicles the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in your boot or under the bonnet.

Topping up the diesel side at the pump happens all the time.

The AdBlue side is filled far less frequently, usually from a bottle, and normally by someone who has to stop and think where it goes.

It's in that gap that the error happens.

## How does AdBlue in your diesel tank occur in Feltwell?

Carelessness rarely explains it. What does is three things lining up at once.

On a driveway off Saint Mary's Street before work, or in the car park at The Wellington on the way home: that is where the rushed top-up happens. What is the reason for the rush? As AdBlue runs low your car tells you, and once it's gone, limp mode follows.

The old car's filler is where the hand reaches — yet a rental car, a new motor or a company car puts the fillers elsewhere. That is a second factor: a new motor.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, and so nothing stops the pour after it has started.

Hockwold cum Wilton or the heart of Feltwell: it takes the same few seconds either way.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

Look at these first, on a forecourt around Feltwell or a drive out in Weeting. Seconds, no more.

- Colour and marking: an AdBlue cap is commonly blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap usually doesn't. Go by the cap, not its position.

- The size. On plenty of vehicles the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- Lift the flap and check for a label — many vehicles show which belongs in each inlet just there.

- The handbook. If the filler is not by your diesel cap, it is in your boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- Collecting a hire or company car, say at the car park at Lakenheath? Check with whoever drove the car last before leaving, rather than when the light goes on.

## How to top up without AdBlue in the diesel tank

Anywhere around Norfolk the light comes on, this is a routine for the day.

- Not in a rush on the side of Bell Street, not on a slope, not with your engine running: park then switch off properly.

- Daft as it sounds, saying "AdBlue" out loud while you unscrew the cap does the trick — once you have located your filler and read it.

- If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — then leave the car on.

- Finish once your tank fills or the bottle is empty; until then, pour gently using its built-in spout.

- Before you start your car, close the cap and look a second time that your diesel cap was never came off.

Stop there if you find, at step two or three, that you've already poured into your diesel side.

Don't go on to stage five.

## Put AdBlue in the diesel tank in Feltwell already?

Then the order of things is short. Do not start the motor.

Leave your ignition off as well, because on many diesels switching it on alone runs the pump.

Don't top up with diesel to thin it: AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of the tank, where your fuel is pulled from.

If you're at a forecourt, whether it's the Merco or the another forecourt nearby, ask the staff to help push the car away from the pump.

If you are on your own drive around Feltwell, leave the vehicle where it stands.

Stop as soon as it is safe then switch off, if your motor has already run.

The next junction is where to come off when you're on the M11, under 50 miles from Feltwell.

Roughly how far did it go? Hopping across Feltwell is less work than a trip of under 15 miles to Ely, and so say.

## What takes place when we turn up in Feltwell

Wherever the vehicle came to rest, be it outside Edmund de Moundeford VC Primary School, Feltwell, beside Saint Mary's or at home, our van travels to it.

Those answers decide this work and our price, so we ask what went in, roughly how much, and whether it's run.

Nobody sets off before you have heard our price by phone.

Then the tank is cleared and the system rinsed thoroughly.

With AdBlue that counts more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it does not wash out on its own.

The filter flushed or, where needed, replaced; fresh diesel in; and then a check of your vehicle.

After that our engineers start it and check it runs smoothly before leaving.

If your engine has not run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once we are there, using pumps that are fine on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

The insurer will ask for an engineer's report and your VAT invoice, and you get both once the job is done. Payment comes on the day, with no money upfront.

Misfuelling cover is included in many insurance policies — so make use of the wait to look at yours.
