# Fen End: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Avoid It?

Leave the engine and ignition off then ring 0333 366 0103 now — reading can wait if AdBlue is already in your diesel tank.

Usually, when the motor hasn't turned, it is emptied and fully rinsed where the car sits around Fen End.

The rest of this page explains why it takes place and how to ensure it doesn't — handy if you are reading before it has happened.

## Why does AdBlue in a diesel vehicle need its own filler?

Diesel feeds your motor — but many modern diesels driven round Fen End and Church End carry a second liquid too.

AdBlue goes to your exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to fresh it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Each tank has its own filler.

On a lot of vehicles the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in the boot or under the bonnet.

Diesel gets filled on each forecourt visit, again and again.

A driver who has to stop and think where it goes normally tops up the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and far less regularly.

The error lives in that gap.

## How AdBlue in your diesel tank takes place in Fen End

It's hardly ever carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

On a drive off Ing Drove before work, or in the car park at The Black Bull on the way home: that's where the rushed top-up happens. Why the rush? As AdBlue gets low your car tells you, and once it is gone, limp mode kicks in.

Next, the hand reaches for the cap it would have used on the old car — since a rental car, a new vehicle or a company car puts the fillers where your last one didn't.

A spouted bottle meets no resistance at a diesel filler no more than at an AdBlue one. So the pour, once started, keeps on.

Donington South Ing or the heart of Fen End: it takes the same few seconds in both.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

Look at these first, on a forecourt around Fen End or a driveway out in Quadring. A few seconds, that's all.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is commonly blue, or marked "AdBlue". Your diesel cap normally is not. Read it rather than going by position.

- Plenty of cars fit AdBlue the smaller neck of the two.

- A label inside the fuel flap often shows which fuel goes where, on plenty of vehicles. Look for it.

- In the boot or under the bonnet: that is where your filler sits if it is not by the diesel cap, and the handbook tells you which.

- Ask the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — if you pick up a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park at Swineshead.

## How to top up without AdBlue in your diesel tank

Anywhere around Lincolnshire the light comes on, this is a routine for that day.

- Switch off after you park — level ground, motor off, and never in a rush beside Town Dam Lane on the verge.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds silly and it does the trick.

- If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — and leave the vehicle on.

- Pour slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it is full or when the bottle is empty.

- Close the cap and check a second time. Make sure the diesel cap was never opened. Only then start the vehicle.

Discover at the second or third stage that AdBlue went in the diesel filler? That is where you stop.

Don't carry on to step five.

## Fen End: already put AdBlue in your diesel tank?

Then the order of things is short. Don't start your engine.

Keep your ignition off as well, since on many diesels switching it on alone runs your fuel pump.

Don't top up with diesel to thin it: AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of the tank, where your fuel is pulled from.

At a forecourt — Esso, another forecourt nearby or any other — the staff will normally help push the car clear, if you ask.

Leave it where it is if you are on your own drive in Fen End.

Already started? Pull over once it's safe, then switch off.

The next exit means the place to come off if you're on the A1(M), under 50 miles from Fen End.

A short hop across Fen End is a smaller job than a run towards Peterborough, under 25 miles away, and so tell us about how far it went.

## Fen End: what occurs when our engineers get there

Wherever your car came to rest, whether by The Donington Cowley Endowed Primary School, near Donington Community Centre or at home, the van travels to it.

Which liquid was put in, the amount, and if it ran: our technicians ask since those answers set the work and price.

During the call itself, you hear our price — before dispatch.

Emptying that tank comes next, then a thorough flush of the system.

Unlike petrol, AdBlue leaves crystals and eats at some fuel-system metals, and none of that clears away unaided. That is why it counts more.

Once the fuel filter has been flushed — or replaced, where needed — clean diesel goes in, and then the car is tested.

We don't leave until it has been fired up and is running smoothly.

Unrun vehicles mostly mean a half-hour job from arrival. The kit is safe on a live filling station, and hushed enough for a driveway after dark.

No money in advance; you settle up on the day. At the end, the VAT invoice and a report from the engineer are handed to you for the insurer.

Before we get there, have a look at your insurance documents; many carry cover for misfuelling.
