# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Fenton: Why It Occurs and How to Stop It

Stop reading for a moment if your diesel tank already has AdBlue in it: ignition off, motor off, and call 0333 366 0103.

Caught before the engine runs, it's usually a drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is in Fenton.

The rest of this page explains why it happens and how to make sure it does not — useful if you're reading before it has happened.

## AdBlue in a diesel vehicle, and its separate tank

Diesel goes to the engine — but plenty of modern diesels seen around Fenton and Berry Hill hold a second fluid too.

Your exhaust, not your engine, is where AdBlue ends up: dosed into the gas to fresh them, from a separate tank.

There's a filler for each tank.

On a lot of vehicles the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in your boot or under the bonnet.

The diesel side is fuelled at the pump all the time.

Far less regularly, the AdBlue side gets topped up — normally from a bottle, by a person thinking about where it goes.

The error lives in that gap.

## How does AdBlue in the diesel tank take place around Fenton?

Rarely is it carelessness: normally three things coincide.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low your car tells you, and if it runs out altogether, the car drops into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a drive off City Road before work, or in the car park outside The Royal Oak on the way home.

Then, your hand goes for the cap it knew on the old car — because a hire car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers where your last one did not.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, and so nothing stops the tip once it has started.

It takes a few seconds, whether out in Fenton Low or bang in the heart of Fenton.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

Be it a Fenton forecourt or a drive over in Stoke-upon-Trent, take a few seconds on these before anything is poured in.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is often blue, or marked "AdBlue". Your diesel cap usually is not. Read it rather than going by where it sits.

- Look at the size: the smaller filler neck is, on many motors, the AdBlue one.

- The flap. Look inside your fuel flap for a label. Plenty of cars say there which fuel goes where.

- The handbook says which it lives if your filler is not next to the diesel cap: your boot, or under the bonnet.

- The previous driver knows. Ask as you pick up a hire car or company car — at Stoke-On-Trent's car park, say — rather than once the light comes on.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching the diesel tank

The day the light comes on, anywhere across Staffordshire, follow this routine.

- Turn off once parked — level ground, engine stopped, and not rushed by Fountain Street at the roadside.

- Silly as it sounds, saying "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap does the trick — once you've found the filler and read the cap.

- The diesel cap remains on. Where the two sit under a flap, confirm it is closed before lifting the bottle.

- Pour slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it's full or when the bottle is empty.

- Before starting the car, shut the cap and check a second time that your diesel cap was never opened off.

Stop there if you find, at step two or three, that you've already poured into the diesel side.

Skip stage five altogether.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank already, in Fenton?

Don't start the motor: that is where the short order of things begins.

Leave your ignition off as well, since on many diesels switching it on by itself runs the pump.

AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where your fuel is drawn from — so do not top up with diesel to dilute it.

If you're on a forecourt, whether it's the Asda or the BP, ask the staff to help push your car away from the petrol pump.

Your own driveway in Fenton is the place it stays.

Stop as soon as it is safe and switch off, if the engine has already run.

Come off the M6 — under 5 miles out of Fenton — at the next junction.

A short hop across Fenton is a smaller job than a run towards Stoke-on-Trent, under 3 miles away, and so tell us roughly how far it went.

## Our arrival around Fenton, and what happens next

Our engineers come to the vehicle wherever it has stopped, whether that is outside Our Lady's Catholic Academy, near War Memorial or on your own drive.

Those replies determine this work and our price, and so our technicians ask what went in, about how much, and whether it has run.

You get that price by phone, before anybody heads out.

Emptying the tank comes next, followed by a full flush of the fuel system.

With AdBlue that matters more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it does not wash out on its own.

Your filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and the vehicle is tested.

Your engine is started next and checked to make sure it runs smoothly, all before our technicians go.

If your motor hasn't run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once we're there, using pumps that are safe on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer.

It is worth checking your policy while we travel to you: misfuelling cover comes with plenty of policies.
