# Fernhurst: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Prevent It?

AdBlue already in your diesel tank? Then put this page down a moment, keep the ignition and engine off, and ring 0333 366 0103.

Usually, when the motor hasn't turned, it's emptied and thoroughly flushed where your vehicle is around Fernhurst.

If you are reading before it has happened, the remainder of this page is about why it occurs and how to make sure it does not.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel vehicle

No single fluid but two: that's how plenty of newer diesels around Fernhurst and Henley Common carry, with diesel feeding your motor.

Stored in a tank of its own, AdBlue is sprayed into the exhaust stream and cleans it.

Each tank has its own filler.

Many of cars share a single flap for the two, while others put the AdBlue filler to your boot or under the bonnet.

Topping up the diesel side at the pump happens constantly.

The AdBlue side is fuelled far less frequently, usually from a bottle, and normally by someone who has to stop and think where it goes.

That gap is where the error lives.

## How AdBlue in your diesel tank takes place around Fernhurst

Carelessness rarely explains it. What does is three things coming up together.

On a driveway off Vann Road before work, or in the car park outside The Red Lion heading home: that is where the rushed top-up happens. What is the reason for the rush? As AdBlue gets low the vehicle tells you, and once it is gone, limp mode follows.

Then your car is unfamiliar. A hire car, a new vehicle or a company car puts the fillers where your last one didn't, and your hand gets to for the cap it would have used on the old one.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, so nothing stops the pour after it has started.

Hatch Farm Hill or the middle of Fernhurst: it takes the same few seconds in both.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

Whether a Fernhurst forecourt or a drive out in Henley, spend a couple of seconds on these before anything is poured in.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is often blue, or marked "AdBlue". The diesel cap usually isn't. Read it rather than going by position.

- Look at the size: the smaller filler neck is, on plenty of cars, the AdBlue one.

- The flap. Look inside your fuel flap for a label. Plenty of vehicles say there which fuel goes where.

- Cannot find it beside the diesel filler? Then look below the bonnet or in your boot — the owner's manual will say where.

- Collecting a hire or company car, perhaps at the car park outside Haslemere? Ask the person who drove the car last before leaving, not when the light comes on.

## AdBlue top-ups that never reach the diesel tank

The day the light comes on, wherever across West Sussex, follow this routine.

- Stop on level, engine off, with time to spare — not rushing on the side of Haslemere Road.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, once you find the AdBlue filler and reading it. Daft, yes, yet it does the trick.

- The diesel cap stays on. Where both sit under a flap, confirm it's closed before lifting the bottle.

- Finish when your tank fills or the bottle runs dry; until then, tip gently using its built-in spout.

- Close the cap and check once more. Make sure the diesel cap was never opened. Only then start the car.

Find at the second or third stage that AdBlue went into the diesel filler? That is where you stop.

Leave out step five entirely.

## Already put AdBlue in your diesel tank in Fernhurst?

Then the order of things is short. Do not start the engine.

The fuel pump runs on many diesels the moment your ignition goes on — so leave it off.

AdBlue does not mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of that tank, where your fuel is sucked from — so do not top up with diesel to dilute it.

At a forecourt — Arnolds Garage, Asda Express or any other — the staff will usually help push the vehicle clear, when you ask.

On your own drive in Fernhurst? Then the car remains where it is.

When the motor has run by now, pull over safely then switch the vehicle off.

Fernhurst sits under 15 miles from the Waterlooville Bypass; there, take the first junction.

Distance matters — a short hop across Fernhurst makes a smaller job than driving under 15 miles towards Chichester — so say about how far it went.

## Fernhurst: what occurs when we arrive

Wherever the vehicle has stopped, whether outside Fernhurst Primary School, beside Fernhurst Village Hall or at home, the van comes to it.

We ask what got in, about how much, and whether it has run, because those replies settle the work and our quote.

You get that quote on the phone, before anyone heads out.

After that: draining, then a full flush of the entire system.

With AdBlue that matters more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it does not wash out on its own.

The filter cleaned or, where needed, replaced; clean diesel in; and then a test of your car.

The motor is fired up next and tested to confirm it runs properly, all before our engineers head off.

Most jobs are finished in about half an hour after we get there, provided your motor has not run — and the pumps our technicians use are safe on a busy forecourt yet quiet after dark beside a house.

Your insurer usually wants the engineer's report and your VAT invoice, and you get both at the end. Payment comes on the day, with no money upfront.

Wrong-fuel cover is included in many insurance policies — and so use the wait to check yours.
