# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Ferring? Don't Start It

If AdBlue has got into the diesel tank, leave your engine off then leave your ignition off.

Chemically, AdBlue is simply urea in water.

As it is water-based, it will not ignite and won't blend with diesel; trouble just comes once the pump starts pulling it.

In Ferring, AdBlue in a diesel tank caught before your engine runs usually comes down to a drain and a thorough flush, right where your car is.

Before you do anything else, phone 0333 366 0103.

## Ferring, AdBlue in the diesel tank: what to do at once

Do:

- Take the keys out, so nobody switches your ignition on.

- Put the hazards on if you're at all close to moving traffic.

- The empty bottle or your receipt shows us the product and the quantity, and so don't bin it away.

- Give us a postcode starting BN12 5, or whichever street is closest, and the van finds you straight — so ring from wherever you are.

Not to do:

- Moving the car even a short way is no reason to fire up your motor.

- Your ignition stays off: on many diesels, switching it on is enough to run your pump.

- No extra fuel added. The AdBlue will not blend, and so it is pointless.

- Never drive the vehicle anywhere, not even a short stretch down Ferring Street.

- Draining your tank on your own by the road is not one to try.

The attendants on duty at any Ferring filling station — the Asda among them — will usually lend a hand pushing it clear if you ask.

On that drive, your car stays just as it was left.

## What AdBlue does in a diesel tank

AdBlue is made for your exhaust, not your engine.

Stored in a separate tank, it's squirted into the exhaust stream to treat the gases.

Not one side fits the other: urea doesn't belong in a pump, and a pump can't take urea.

Inside a diesel tank it acts really differently from fuel. It doesn't mix in.

The pickup sucks fuel from the lowest part of that tank, and that is just where AdBlue settles: being denser than diesel, it sinks.

Simplest of all: a vehicle that got AdBlue in Kingston Gorse overnight and has not been started since. The AdBlue sits at the base of your tank, untouched — though it will be first through once the motor runs, ahead of any diesel at all.

After it is pulled in, the harm takes two forms.

It attacks some metals found in fuel components, attacking whatever it reaches until it's removed from your system. And once the water goes, the urea turns into crystals that block filters and lodge in narrow channels.

A vehicle left standing around Ferring with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue only in its tank isn't.

Water protects nothing. The injection pump and each injector depend on diesel flowing through them, so the water content damages them in its own right.

## Why AdBlue in a diesel is regularly more serious than petrol

Top up a diesel with petrol in error at the Steeles of Worthing, and the problem is diluted fuel.

No damage comes while it stays unused, mixed into the diesel — only when your engine runs on it.

AdBlue in a diesel is an issue of the wrong substance altogether.

It doesn't burn, so it can't simply be run through.

Deposits and corrosion remain through the following fill, and AdBlue splits back from your diesel, so thinning it won't help. That is why the flush matters more, and trying the engine "to see" does more harm with AdBlue than almost any other mistake — in West Kingston or the heart of Ferring equally.

The same good news holds as with petrol.

Never run? Then the AdBlue sits only inside your tank, the simplest bit of the entire system to clear, wherever the vehicle has come to rest around West Sussex.

## How AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank in Ferring

Nobody means to do it. The AdBlue filler on many vehicles rests right next to your diesel filler, sometimes under the same flap, and the two caps can look alike in poor light.

Mostly it happens with a bottle bought on the way home and poured in on the drive, not at the pump.

A few familiar ways cover the majority of them.

The top-up is hurried outside Ferring C of E Primary School, after the dash flashed with a warning while the kids were taken off.

A driver tips the container in at home, right off Rife Way, as the day ends.

Another version: dim light, the car park by Henty Arms, and a driver using that flap the first time.

The least familiar cars get it the most — hire cars, brand-new ones, company ones, and the other vehicle of a home with one of each fuels.

Wherever across West Sussex, Ferring as well, the mistake does not change, and nor does the first step: leave it switched off.

## Already started your engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank in Ferring?

Then that tank is no longer where the AdBlue is.

Through the fuel filter, along the pipework, and — with any running time — into the injection pump and every injector: that is how far it travels.

You may notice the engine running unevenly, smoking, losing power, showing warning lights or cutting out, possibly on the way back from Ferring Green or halfway across Ferring.

When safe, pull over and switch it off — with no turning it on again to see.

More of it is pulled through with each start.

On the M23, under 25 miles from Ferring, the next junction is where to leave, and somewhere safe is where to park — not carrying on.

How far it went matters. A couple of hundred yards across Ferring to the car park by Ferring Library is a very different job from a run towards Brighton and Hove, under 15 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into the fuel system with every mile.

Let us know roughly how far it had come.

Once the engine has run, the flush includes more, and all of it is done where the vehicle has stopped.

If it is caught soon, long-term damage is very rare.

## What clearing AdBlue from a diesel involves around Ferring

The vehicle stays where it is, whether that's a street near Glebelands Community Centre, a drive, a layby or a forecourt in Ferring, and our van travels to it.

Three replies shape the job, and so first our engineers ask what was put in, about the amount, and whether your engine has run.

The contaminated diesel and the urea leave together after that tank is drained, on the spot.

A careful flush counts far more with AdBlue than after petrol, since what remains will not wash away on its own.

Testing your vehicle comes at the end, once fresh diesel goes in and the filter is flushed or, if necessary, replaced.

About half an hour on site is usual for most jobs when the motor has not run.

Explosion-proof pumps make a busy forecourt sensible to work on, and they run quiet enough to spare the street at night.

Clean diesel goes in to bleed the system, and that is the final step.

Then our technicians start it and you set off, whether from a parking space by Goring-By-Sea or a driveway in Ferring.

The test before our technicians go is that it runs properly on fresh diesel.

Our technicians do it all wherever your car has ended up, and it never has to be taken to a garage.

Your insurer is likely to want an engineer's report and your VAT invoice — each handed over afterwards.

Ring and check instead of guessing when you are by a county line, or anywhere tricky to explain.

A van that comes to you suits Ferring, a coastal village: there's no need to take your vehicle to us, because we drain it there, on a drive, a side street, a car park or a forecourt.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank around Ferring: the cost of fixing it

Because each jobs differ, a flat price would not be honest.

Whether your engine has been running, and for how long, comes first in what shifts the price. How much AdBlue was put in comes next, and then the location of the car, because an open drive is simpler for our van to get to safely than a tight gap behind Ferring Village Hall.

For that reason, each enquiry from Ferring opens by asking the identical trio — which fluid went in, how much, whether the engine ran — ahead of a figure.

Once they are answered, a range becomes a single firm figure.

The quote is given during the call, before a van sets off; settling up comes on the day, by card or over the phone, and nothing upfront.

Misfuelling cover is part of plenty of insurance policies, so it pays to look at yours before the van arrives.

## Beside the vehicle around Ferring, still?

Then the most handy thing you can do is nothing to the car.

Ignition off, engine off, keys out.

Say it was AdBlue, roughly how big an amount, and if it ran, on 0333 366 0103. After that Petrol in Diesel handles it, in Ferring or wherever within West Sussex.
