# Finaghy: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Avoid It?

Pause here for a moment if your diesel tank already has AdBlue in it: ignition off, motor off, and ring 0333 366 0103.

Caught before the motor runs, it's usually a drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is around Finaghy.

Not happened yet? Further down, the page explains the why it happens and the ways to avoid it for good.

## Why does AdBlue in a diesel motor need its own filler?

Not one liquid but two: that's what plenty of modern diesels near Finaghy and Ballyskeagh carry, with diesel feeding the engine.

Stored in a tank of its own, AdBlue is fed into the exhaust stream and cleans it.

Each tank has its own filler.

Some cars keep the AdBlue filler in your boot or under the bonnet; a lot more place both side by side under one flap.

The diesel side is fuelled at the pump all the time.

The AdBlue side is filled far less often, normally from a bottle, and normally by somebody who has to stop and think where it goes.

The mistake grows in the gap between them.

## How does AdBlue in the diesel tank occur around Finaghy?

Three things tend to come together, and carelessness is seldom one of them.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low the vehicle tells you, and if it runs out altogether, your vehicle goes into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a driveway off South Crescent before work, or in the car park outside the pub in the village on the way home.

Then the vehicle is unfamiliar. A hire car, a new motor or a company car puts the fillers where your last one did not, and the hand gets to for the cap it would have used on the old one.

No part stops the pour once it has started, because a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits.

Dunmurry or the heart of Finaghy: it is the same few seconds either way.

## The AdBlue filler and the diesel filler: telling them apart

Look at these before pouring, on a forecourt around Finaghy or a driveway over in Ballylesson. Seconds, no more.

- Colour and marking: an AdBlue cap is regularly blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap normally does not. Go by the cap, not where it sits.

- Many vehicles fit AdBlue the smaller neck of the two.

- The flap. Look inside your fuel flap for a label. Plenty of cars say there which fuel goes where.

- In your boot or under the bonnet: that's where your filler sits if it's not by your diesel cap, and the handbook says which.

- Collecting a hire or company car, perhaps at the car park at the nearest station? Ask the person who drove it last before you set off, rather than once the light comes on.

## AdBlue top-ups that never reach the diesel tank

For the day the light comes on — anywhere it is around County Antrim — a routine to use.

- Pull in somewhere level, engine off, with time in hand — not hurried on the side of Dunskey Street.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds silly and it works.

- If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — then leave the car on.

- Using the bottle's own spout, pour slowly — and stop when it's full or the bottle is empty.

- Close the cap, then check once more — confirm the diesel filler remained shut throughout. Only then, start your car.

Stop there if you find, at step two or three, that you've already poured into your diesel side.

Stage five stays out.

## Put AdBlue in the diesel tank around Finaghy already?

Short order, then. First: the motor remains unstarted.

On plenty of diesels your ignition alone runs the fuel pump, so do not switch it on.

Don't top up with diesel to thin it: AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where the fuel is pulled from.

At a forecourt — the nearest petrol station, another forecourt nearby or any other — the staff will usually help push the vehicle away, if you ask.

Your own driveway around Finaghy is the place it stays.

If your engine has already run, stop as soon as it is safe and switch off.

On the M77, over 50 miles from Finaghy, that means the next exit.

Tell us about how far it went: a run towards Belfast, under 5 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Finaghy.

## Finaghy: what happens when our engineers turn up

Outside the local primary school, close to the centre or on your own drive: wherever the car has stopped, our technicians come to it.

The replies decide this work and our quote, and so our engineers ask what went in, roughly how much, and if it's run.

The quote comes over the phone, before any van leaves.

The fuel system is then purged thoroughly, once your tank is emptied.

With AdBlue that counts more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it does not wash out on its own.

A test comes last: before that, clean diesel goes in, and the fuel filter is cleaned or changed as needed.

Before we go, we start it and confirm that it's running correctly.

Unrun vehicles mostly mean a half-hour job after the moment we arrive. The equipment is safe on a busy filling station, and quiet enough for a residential street after dark.

You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer.

Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it's worth checking yours whilst we are on the way.
