# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Finstall: Why It Occurs and How to Stop It

Keep the engine and ignition off and ring 0333 366 0103 now — reading can wait if AdBlue is already in the diesel tank.

Normally, when the engine has not run, it is drained and thoroughly rinsed where your vehicle is around Finstall.

If you are reading before it has happened, the rest of this page is about why it takes place and how to make sure it does not.

## AdBlue in a diesel vehicle, and its separate tank

Diesel goes to your motor — but plenty of newer diesels seen around Finstall and Aston Fields hold another fluid as well.

Kept in a tank of its own, AdBlue is fed into the exhaust stream to clean it.

There is a filler for each tank.

On a lot of vehicles the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in the boot or under the bonnet.

Filling the diesel side at the pump happens all the time.

Rarely filled, AdBlue usually comes from a bottle, poured by someone who must stop and think which filler it needs.

Mistakes happen in that gap between them.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank in Finstall: how it takes place

Carelessness seldom causes it. Instead is three things lining up together.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low the vehicle tells you, and if it runs out altogether, the vehicle goes into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a driveway off Penmanor before work, or in the car park outside The Cross Inn on the way home.

Unfamiliar cars are second, as well. Rentals, new vehicles and company vehicles place their fillers differently, and the hand goes for the cap it used on the old one.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, so nothing stops the pour after it has started.

Whether it takes place in Slideslow or the middle of Finstall, it is the same few seconds.

## The AdBlue filler and your diesel filler: telling them apart

Before you pour anything, whether on a driveway in Stoney Hill or a forecourt around Finstall, check these. They take a couple of seconds.

- Position misleads; the cap doesn't. AdBlue caps are often blue or bear the word "AdBlue" — diesel ones normally don't.

- On many cars, the size tells: AdBlue gets the smaller filler neck.

- The flap. Look inside your fuel flap for a label. Many motors say there which fuel goes where.

- The handbook shows where it is when the filler is not next to your diesel cap: the boot, or under the bonnet.

- The person who drove the vehicle last. On a hire or company car picked up from somewhere like the car park at Bromsgrove, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

## Keeping AdBlue out of your diesel tank when you top up

The day the light goes on, wherever across Worcestershire, follow this routine.

- Pull in somewhere level, engine off, with time to spare — not rushing on the side of Heydon Road.

- Find the AdBlue filler, check the cap, and say the word "AdBlue" aloud while unscrewing it. It seems daft. It works.

- Both behind one flap? So confirm the cap on the diesel side is still closed ahead of raising the bottle.

- Pour slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it is full or when the bottle is empty.

- Only then, start the car: close the cap, check again, and make sure the diesel cap was never opened.

Spot at stage two or three that it's already gone into the diesel side? Then stop just there.

Never go on to stage five.

## Put AdBlue in the diesel tank in Finstall already?

Do not start the engine: that's how the short order of things begins.

On many diesels your ignition alone runs the fuel pump, and so don't switch the car on.

AdBlue does not mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of that tank, where the fuel is pulled from — so don't top up with diesel to dilute it.

The attendants at BP, Morrisons or another forecourt will usually lend a hand pushing the car clear if you ask.

On your own drive in Finstall? Then the vehicle stays put.

If your motor has already run, stop as soon as it is safe and switch off.

On the M42, under 3 miles from Finstall, that means the next exit.

Mileage counts — a short hop across Finstall makes a smaller job than heading under 15 miles to Birmingham — so tell us roughly how far it went.

## Our arrival in Finstall, and what takes place next

Anywhere the car has stopped, be it outside Finstall First School, near Finstall Village Hall or at home, the van travels to it.

Our technicians ask what was put in, about how much, and whether it's run, because the answers decide the work and our quote.

Nobody heads out before you've heard our price by phone.

Your system is then cleaned thoroughly, after the tank is cleared.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it does not wash out on its own — which is why that counts more with AdBlue than with petrol.

The filter flushed or, where needed, replaced; clean diesel in; then a test of your car.

Before we leave, we fire it up and confirm that it's running properly.

If the engine has not run, most jobs take about half an hour once we're there, using pumps that are fine on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

No money upfront; you settle up on the day. At the end, a VAT invoice and the report from the engineer go to you for your insurer.

It is worth looking at your insurance as the van travels to you: misfuelling cover is included with many policies.
