# Don't Start It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Finvoy

With AdBlue in the diesel tank, the ignition stays off and so does the motor.

Water with urea dissolved in it: that is AdBlue.

It does not burn, it doesn't mix with diesel, and the damage it does starts when the system pulls it in.

In Finvoy, AdBlue in a diesel tank caught before your motor runs normally comes down to a drain and a thorough flush, right where your car is.

Nothing comes before calling 0333 366 0103.

## Those opening minutes: AdBlue in the diesel tank in Finvoy

To do:

- Keys out — then no one can power anything on.

- If you are anywhere near moving traffic, put your hazards on.

- So you can tell us which fluid it was and about how much, save the receipt or the empty bottle.

- Call just where you are. Quote a BT53 7 postcode or the closest street sign, and nobody has to search for you.

Never:

- Moving your vehicle just a few yards is no reason to fire up your motor.

- Switching the key to ignition by itself starts your pump going on many diesels. Skip it.

- Don't top up with diesel to dilute it. AdBlue does not dilute in diesel; it separates out.

- Do not drive the vehicle anywhere, not even a short distance along Wallace Cottages.

- By the road, do not try emptying it on your own.

The attendants working at any Finvoy filling station — the the nearest petrol station among them — will usually lend a hand pushing it clear if you ask.

At your own drive, do not touch it at all.

## What does AdBlue do in a diesel tank?

Meant for your exhaust, AdBlue has no place in your engine.

It goes into its own tank and is sprayed into the exhaust gas to fresh it.

Neither side suits the other: urea does not belong in a pump, and a pump cannot take urea.

It does not blend. Once it is poured into a tank of diesel, AdBlue acts not at all like fuel.

It drops, since it is heavier than diesel, and settles down where the intake draws its fuel from.

The first thing the system pulls through, after it runs, is the AdBlue. So a motor that had AdBlue poured in on a drive in Balnamore last night, and hasn't been started since, is still the easy case: the AdBlue is lying at the bottom of the tank, and nothing has sucked it in.

It does two kinds of harm from there.

What is left once the water evaporates is urea, which turns into crystals: they lodge in narrow channels and clog filters. On top of that, it attacks some metals in a fuel system, and carries on until it is cleared out.

Overnight, a car parked in Finvoy with AdBlue through its pipework gets worse; if it is only in your tank, it doesn't.

The water in it causes damage of its own: the high-pressure fuel pump and the injectors depend on diesel to lubricate them, and water offers them nothing.

## Petrol or AdBlue in a diesel: why AdBlue is frequently worse

Fill a diesel with petrol in error over at the another forecourt nearby, and this issue is thinned fuel.

Mixed into your diesel and sitting still, it's harmless for now; using the engine is the harm.

With AdBlue in a diesel, the liquid as such is plainly the wrong one.

Because it does not burn, running it through is not an option.

Crystals and corrosion stay through the following fill, and AdBlue splits back out of your diesel, so thinning it won't work. That is why the flush counts more, and trying your engine "to see" costs more here than almost any other slip — in Rasharkin or the centre of Finvoy equally.

The good news is the same as with petrol.

Clearing a tank is the simplest part on a fuel system, and without running, the AdBlue stays in there — anywhere in County Antrim your vehicle sits.

## How does AdBlue end up in a diesel tank around Finvoy?

Plenty of vehicles place the AdBlue filler beside the diesel one, now and then under one flap, and after dark the two can appear identical. Nobody intends it.

It usually happens outside the house, from a container grabbed en route home, rather than at the forecourt.

It tends to occur in a few familiar ways.

A warning light comes on during the school run, and the top-up takes place in a hurry outside the local primary school.

A bottle is poured in at the end of the day on a drive just off B842.

Else, in dim light by the pub in the village, your vehicle gets refilled by a driver opening that flap the first time.

Hired motors, brand-new cars, company motors, or the second vehicle in a home with one of each: the least known cars see it the most.

Wherever you are in Finvoy or the rest of County Antrim, it's the same error and the same first answer: leave the car off.

## Already started the motor with AdBlue in your diesel tank in Finvoy?

Then the AdBlue has left that tank.

Given any running, it goes on to the high-pressure pump and every injector, having passed via the fuel filter and lines.

Expect rough running, exhaust smoke, falling power, warnings on your dash, or a stall — coming back from the green space at the edge of the village, perhaps, or midway across Finvoy.

No starting it again to check: stop when safe, then switch everything off.

More of that is pulled through with each start.

If you were on the M77, over 50 miles from Finvoy, come off at the next exit and stop somewhere safe instead of pressing on.

Each mile pushes the AdBlue further in. That's why a hop across Finvoy to park near the centre and a drive of under 50 miles towards Derry are very different jobs.

Let us know roughly how far it had come.

There's more to clean out once the motor has run, and our engineers do all of it where the vehicle has stopped.

Very seldom does it leave long-term damage if it is spotted early.

## Clearing AdBlue in a diesel in Finvoy: what it takes

Our technicians come to the car, wherever it has stopped in Finvoy: a side street near a street just off the centre, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt.

Three answers decide the job, and so first our technicians ask what went in, roughly what quantity, and whether the engine has turned over.

Next, emptying that tank right there takes out the polluted diesel along with the AdBlue together.

A full flush counts far more with AdBlue than with petrol, since residue will not clear away on its own.

The fuel filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and the vehicle is tested.

Most of these jobs are a half-hour visit once we get there, provided your engine hasn't run.

Our equipment is explosion-proof, so a live forecourt is no issue, and it's quiet enough for a residential street after dark.

Fresh diesel goes in to prime your system, and that is the final step.

You set off as soon as we have fired it up, and it makes no difference whether your car is on a driveway around Finvoy or in a space by the nearest station.

Our engineers make sure it runs properly on clean diesel before we leave.

We do it all wherever the vehicle has ended up, and it never has to be taken to a garage.

Insurers ask for a VAT invoice and an engineer report, and you get both afterwards.

Finvoy has a population of around 751 people, and its housing stock is predominantly made up of detached homes. ## AdBlue drains around Finvoy and across County Antrim

Bendooragh, Dunloy and Ballymoney are among the towns around Finvoy that the same teams serve, along with most of County Antrim beyond, throughout the BT postcode area.

Ring and ask rather than guess when you are by a county line, or anywhere awkward to explain.

No moving is needed. In Finvoy, a small village, a mobile service works: your car is emptied on the spot, be it on a drive, a side street, a car park or a forecourt.

## What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right in Finvoy

Since each callouts vary, a flat price wouldn't be honest.

The price shifts first with how long, if at all, the motor has been running, and next with the amount of AdBlue that was put in. After that it rests on where the car is and whether a technician can reach it safely, which is simpler on an open drive than in a tight space behind the far end of the built-up part.

That's why every call from Finvoy starts with the same three questions, asked before giving a figure, not after: what went in, how much, and whether it has run.

Their answers narrow a range down to one figure.

You hear that quote on the phone, before anybody sets off, and you pay on the day, by card or by phone, with nothing upfront.

Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it is worth checking yours while we are on the way.

## Alongside the car in Finvoy, right now?

Not touching the car is, then, the most useful move you can do.

Keys out; motor and ignition off.

Ring 0333 366 0103: AdBlue, roughly how much, and if the engine ran are everything our technicians need. Petrol in Diesel handles the remainder throughout County Antrim, Finvoy too.
