# Fleming Field: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Leave It Off

With AdBlue in your diesel tank, your ignition remains off and so does the engine.

Urea dissolved in water is what AdBlue is.

Unlike fuel, it neither ignites nor blends, and no harm happens until the engine sucks it round.

Caught before the engine has been run, AdBlue in a diesel tank is generally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is in Fleming Field.

Call 0333 366 0103 before you do anything else.

## What to do straight away, Fleming Field: AdBlue in the diesel tank

Things to do:

- So nobody can turn your ignition on, pull your keys away.

- Hazards on, if moving traffic is anywhere close.

- So you can give us which liquid it was and about what quantity, save the till receipt or the empty bottle.

- Tell us a postcode starting DH6 2, or whatever street lies closest, and the van finds you directly — so call wherever you stand.

Not to do:

- No starting the engine — not briefly, not to reposition the vehicle.

- The ignition remains off: on many diesels, turning it on is enough to start your pump.

- Adding extra diesel doesn't help: AdBlue separates out rather than blending.

- Any driving at all is best avoided, even a short way down Buttercup Close.

- By the road, do not attempt draining it on your own.

Ask the people behind the counter to help you move your car off the island if you're at a forecourt around Fleming Field, whether it's the JET or elsewhere.

At home, the vehicle stays exactly as it was left.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does

Made for your exhaust, AdBlue has no place in your engine.

It goes into its own tank and is sprayed into your exhaust gas to fresh it.

Nothing in it is supposed to pass through a fuel pump, and nothing in a fuel pump is made to handle it.

Fuel blends; AdBlue, after tipped in, won't. Its behaviour is nothing like diesel's.

It's heavier than diesel, and so it sinks and collects at the bottom of the tank, which is where the pickup draws fuel from.

A vehicle topped up on a drive in Haswell Plough overnight and not started since is the straightforward case. Nothing has pulled the AdBlue up so far — but once your engine turns, that is what goes first, straight from the bottom of the tank.

It does two kinds of harm from there.

As its water goes, the urea left behind crystallises, and the crystals block filters and settle in fine passages. And it's corrosive to some of the metals a fuel system is made from, so it keeps labouring on the components it hits for as long as it remains there.

Lines holding AdBlue mean damage by morning for a vehicle sitting in Fleming Field. Just in that tank, it stays stable.

Water lubricates nothing. The injection pump and every injector depend on diesel flowing past them, and so the water part damages them in its own right.

## Why is AdBlue in a diesel frequently the bigger problem?

Fill a diesel with petrol in error over at the BP, and this issue is diluted fuel.

Blended into your diesel and sitting unused, it's harmless at that stage; using the engine is the damage.

AdBlue in a diesel is a different problem: not thin fuel, yet no fuel at all.

It does not burn, so it cannot just be run through.

Crystals and corrosion stay through the next fill, and AdBlue separates back from your diesel, and so thinning it won't work. That is why the flush counts so much, and trying your engine "to see" costs more here than almost any other slip — in Haswell or the centre of Fleming Field equally.

The good news is the same as with petrol.

Emptying a tank is the easiest part on any fuel system, and with no running, the AdBlue stays in it — wherever across Durham the car has stopped.

## How AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank around Fleming Field

It is not on purpose. Many vehicles have the AdBlue cap alongside the diesel inlet, now and then behind a single flap, and muddling them up is simple after dark.

Mostly it takes place with a bottle bought on the way home and poured in on the driveway, not at the pump.

The ways it takes place are few and familiar.

A warning light comes on during the school run, and the top-up happens in a hurry outside Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Primary School, Shotton.

Close to Poppy Lane, a driver pours a bottle in at home after work.

Or a driver unfamiliar with that flap refills your car in dim light, parked in the car park by The Blue House.

Hired cars, new motors, fleet motors, or the spare vehicle in a home with both fuels: the least familiar cars get it the most.

Leave it switched off: that's the first step to an identical mistake, anywhere around Fleming Field or the remainder of Durham you are.

## Already started your engine with AdBlue in your diesel tank around Fleming Field?

The AdBlue has left your tank, then.

Your filter and pipework have had it pulled along, and any running time takes it on to the injection pump and each injector.

Lumpy running, smoke from the exhaust, lost power, dashboard warnings or stalling: each might show up, perhaps part way across Fleming Field or coming back from Tuthill Quarry SSSI.

Stop when safe. Switch off. Leave the car off instead of testing it again.

Each start pulls more of it through.

On the A1(M), under 5 miles from Fleming Field, the next junction is where to exit, and somewhere sensible is where to stop — not driving on.

How far it went counts. A few hundred yards across Fleming Field to the car park by Our Lady of Lourdes R.C. Church is a very different job from a run towards Durham, under 10 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into the system with each mile.

Roughly how far it had come is worth telling us.

There is more to rinse out once the engine has been started, and our engineers do all of it where the vehicle has stopped.

Permanent damage is very unusual if it's noticed quickly.

## What emptying AdBlue from a diesel involves around Fleming Field

The car remains put, whether that's a road beside St Saviour's Church, a driveway, a layby or a filling station in Fleming Field, and our van comes to it.

The job depends on three replies, which our technicians get first — which fluid was put in, the quantity, and if the engine has turned over.

The contaminated diesel and the urea come out together when the tank is drained, on the spot.

A full flush matters much more after AdBlue than with petrol, since what remains will not wash out by itself.

Testing your vehicle follows at the end, after fresh diesel goes in and the filter gets cleaned or, if needed, replaced.

If the engine hasn't run, most jobs take about half an hour once our technicians are there.

Quiet enough for use outside a house at night, and fine on a working forecourt, our pumps are explosion-proof.

Clean diesel goes in to prime the system, and that is the final step.

You drive off as soon as our engineers have fired it up, and it makes no difference whether the vehicle is on a driveway in Fleming Field or in a space outside Horden.

The test before our engineers leave is that it runs correctly on new diesel.

The whole job is done where the vehicle is, so it never needs to go to a garage.

Insurers ask for a VAT invoice and an engineer report, and both come at the end.

Assuming won't help by a border or somewhere tricky to describe; ring and check.

A mobile service fits Fleming Field, a small village: there's no need to take your vehicle to us, since our engineers empty it on the spot, on a drive, a residential street, a parking area or a forecourt.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank in Fleming Field: the cost of fixing it

There is no fair single price, since the jobs aren't the same.

The price shifts first with how long, if at all, your engine has been running, and next with the amount of AdBlue that was put in. After that it depends on where the vehicle is and whether our van can get to it safely, which is simpler on an open drive than in a tight spot behind Haswell Colliery Engine House.

That is why each call from Fleming Field starts with the same three questions, asked before giving a figure, not after: what got in, how much, and whether it has run.

Those replies turn a range into a straight quote.

Quoted on the call before the engineer heads out, the job is paid for that day — card or phone, no deposit.

As our engineer is travelling, dig out your policy: many cover misfuelling.

## Alongside your car around Fleming Field, still?
