# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Fleur-de-lis? Don't Start It

If AdBlue has gone into the diesel tank, leave your engine off and leave the ignition off.

AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.

It doesn't burn, it doesn't mix with diesel, and the harm it does starts when the fuel system pulls it in.

A drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is around Fleur-de-lis, is usually what AdBlue in a diesel tank takes — if it is caught before the motor has run.

First, phone us on 0333 366 0103.

## Fleur-de-lis, AdBlue in the diesel tank: what to do right away

Do these:

- Keys out — that way no one can power anything on.

- If you are anywhere near moving traffic, put the hazards on.

- The empty bottle or your receipt shows us the fluid and the quantity, so do not bin it away.

- Tell us a postcode starting NP12 3, or whatever street lies closest, and our van finds you straight — so call from wherever you stand.

Things not to do:

- No starting your engine — not for a second, not to shift the vehicle.

- Plenty of diesels run their pump the instant the ignition comes on, and so leave the vehicle off.

- No more fuel on top. The AdBlue won't mix, so it is pointless.

- Don't drive it anywhere, not even a short distance up High Street.

- No emptying it yourself, either, at the roadside.

Get the people behind the counter to help you move your vehicle off the pumps if you are on a forecourt in Fleur-de-lis, whether it's the the nearest petrol station or somewhere else.

If you are on your own drive, leave the vehicle just where it is.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank, and what it does there

The motor isn't what AdBlue is made for; your exhaust is.

It goes into its own tank and is sprayed into the exhaust gas to fresh it.

Nothing in it is meant to pass through a fuel pump, and nothing in a fuel pump is built to handle it.

It does not combine. After it is poured into the tank, AdBlue behaves nothing like fuel.

It drops, since it's denser than diesel, and settles down where the intake draws its supply from.

Once your pump runs, the AdBlue is top of the list to go through. Before then it waits beneath the diesel, which is how a car filled in Cefn Hengoed last night and not started stays the simple one, provided no one touches the key.

Two kinds of harm follow from there.

It attacks some metals found in fuel components, attacking any part it reaches till it's removed from your system. And when the water goes, the urea turns into crystals that block filters and settle in tiny channels.

A car left standing in Fleur-de-lis with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue only in its tank is not.

Diesel lubricates the high-pressure pump and every injector as it passes; water offers none of that, and that is a separate form of harm.

## Petrol or AdBlue in a diesel: why AdBlue is commonly worse

An issue of thin fuel is what you get after fuelling a diesel with petrol at the Texaco.

Blended through the diesel and sitting still, it is harmless for now; using your motor does the harm.

With AdBlue in a diesel, the fluid itself is simply the wrong one.

Because it does not burn, running it through is not an option.

Whether your car is in Gelli-haf or the centre of Fleur-de-lis, firing it up "to see" costs more with AdBlue than nearly any other mistake, and the flush counts for more. Why: it will not remain mixed, so diluting it is impossible; and deposits and corrosion outlast the next fill.

The good news is the same as with petrol.

Anywhere in Caerphilly your car has stopped, an unstarted motor leaves the AdBlue yet in the tank: the easiest bit of a fuel system to clear.

## How AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank in Fleur-de-lis

It's not deliberate. Many cars have the AdBlue inlet alongside the diesel one, occasionally under a single flap, and muddling them up is easy after dark.

Most of the time it happens with a bottle bought on the way home and poured in on the driveway, not at the pump.

Usually, it happens in one of a couple of familiar ways.

Halfway through the morning drop-off, the dashboard warns, and outside the local primary school the top-up is hurried.

Near Victoria Road, a driver tips a container in on the drive after work.

Else, in dim light outside The Majors, your vehicle gets topped up by someone opening that flap for the first time.

It crops up the most in a rental, a brand-new car, a company motor, or the other vehicle of a home with one of each fuel types — the cars drivers know the least.

Same mistake, an identical first response — leave it switched off — wherever you happen to be around Fleur-de-lis or the rest of Caerphilly.

## Started the engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank in Fleur-de-lis?

In that case, the AdBlue is no longer inside the tank.

It has been sucked through the fuel filter and the fuel lines, and if the motor ran for any time, it has got to the high-pressure pump and your injectors.

Maybe returning from Cefn Fforest Eco Park, or part way across Fleur-de-lis, the engine may run rough, smoke, drop pace, light up the dash or cut out.

Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and do not restart it to check.

Every start pulls more of it through.

If you were on the M4, under 10 miles from Fleur-de-lis, come off at the next junction and stop somewhere sensible instead of pressing on.

A quick hop across Fleur-de-lis to the car park by Pengam Cenotaph is one matter; heading for Newport, under 15 miles away, is something else, because each mile carries the AdBlue deeper in. So mileage matters.

Tell us roughly how far it had come.

Wherever the vehicle came to a halt is where all of it gets done, even with more to flush after your engine has been started.

Lasting damage is very rare when it's spotted soon.

## Fleur-de-lis: how AdBlue is drained from a diesel

The car stays where it is, whether that's a road near Cefn Hengoed Community Centre, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt in Fleur-de-lis, and our van travels to it.

Which fluid went in, roughly how much, plus if your engine has been run: our engineers ask before all else, because those shape the work.

The contaminated diesel and the urea leave as one when your tank is emptied, right there.

The system is flushed thoroughly, which counts more with AdBlue than with petrol, since what it leaves behind does not rinse out on its own.

The filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and the car is tested.

Engine not run? In that case count on roughly half an hour once we are there for most jobs.

The pumping gear is explosion-proof, and so a live filling station is no issue, and it's hushed enough for a residential street late at night.

Lastly, your system is primed with new diesel.

Whether it is a parking space outside Pengam or a drive around Fleur-de-lis, that is where we fire it up and you drive off.

The check before our engineers head off is that it runs properly on new diesel.

The whole job is done where your car is, so it never has to be taken to a workshop.

Your insurer is likely to want an engineer's report and your VAT invoice — each handed over afterwards.

## About Fleur-de-lis

Fleur-de-lis is a village situated on the banks of a river in Caerphilly, with a mix of terraced housing and other residential properties. Fleur-de-lis has a population of around 2320 people and is located near the communities of Pengam, Tir-y-berth, and Glan-y-nant. Fleur-de-lis sits at an elevation of 134 metres, within commuting distance of Newport, which is approximately 10.9 miles away. Fleur-de-lis is also within a reasonable distance of major cities, with London being around 133.3 miles away.

## AdBlue drains around Fleur-de-lis and across Caerphilly

Pengam, Tir-y-berth and Glan-y-nant are among the towns near Fleur-de-lis that the same teams serve, together with most of Caerphilly beyond, over the NP postcode area.

If you are near a border, or somewhere hard to describe, ring and ask rather than assuming.

Fleur-de-lis is a village, and a call-out drain suits it: whether the car is on a home drive, a residential street, a car park or a forecourt, our engineers drain it where it stands, so it never needs to be shifted to us.

## What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right in Fleur-de-lis

Not one single figure would be fair, since each job is different.

Three things move the cost: whether the motor has run and for how long, how much AdBlue got in, and where the vehicle is. That last one turns on whether our van can get to it safely, and an open driveway is simpler than a tight spot behind Spirit of the Stream.

For that in mind, every call from Fleur-de-lis opens by asking the same trio — which fluid was put in, how much, if the engine ran — before a figure.

Those answers narrow the range right down to a single number.

You hear that quote by phone, before anyone sets off, and you pay on the day, by card or by phone, with nothing upfront.

Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it is worth checking yours whilst we're on the way.

## Fleur-de-lis: still alongside the vehicle?

In that case, do nothing — that is the most helpful move there is.

Ignition off, engine off, keys out.

Ring 0333 366 0103: AdBlue, roughly how much, and whether the engine ran are everything our technicians ask. Petrol in Diesel takes over the remainder across Caerphilly, Fleur-de-lis too.
