# Flockton: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Prevent It?

Leave your motor and ignition off then ring 0333 366 0103 now — reading can wait when AdBlue is already in your diesel tank.

Normally, when the engine has not turned, it is emptied and thoroughly flushed where your vehicle is in Flockton.

Reading in advance? In that case the rest covers how it happens and how to stop it happening at all.

## Why does AdBlue in a diesel car need its own filler?

Diesel feeds your engine — but plenty of current diesels driven round Flockton and Upper Denby carry another fluid as well.

AdBlue goes to the exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to fresh it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Each tank has its own filler.

On a lot of motors the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in your boot or under the bonnet.

At the pump, the diesel side is topped up constantly.

Seldom topped up, AdBlue usually comes out of a bottle, poured by a driver who has to stop and think which filler it needs.

The error lives in that gap.

## How does AdBlue in the diesel tank occur in Flockton?

Three things tend to come together, and carelessness is seldom one of them.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low the vehicle tells you, and if it runs out altogether, the car drops into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a drive off Barnsley Road before work, or in the car park outside The Sun Inn on the way home.

The old car's filler is where your hand goes — yet a hire car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers somewhere else. That's the second factor: a strange motor.

A spout-topped bottle finds no resistance at a diesel filler any more than at an AdBlue one. And so the tip, after started, carries on.

The same few seconds settle it, in the middle of Flockton or out in Hill Top.

## The AdBlue filler and your diesel filler: telling them apart

Be it a Flockton forecourt or a drive over in Flockton Moor, spend a couple of seconds on these before anything goes in.

- Colour and lettering: an AdBlue cap is often blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap usually does not. Trust the cap, not where it sits.

- Look at the size: the smaller filler neck is, on plenty of vehicles, the AdBlue one.

- A label inside your fuel flap frequently shows which fuel goes where, on plenty of motors. Check for it.

- The handbook. If the filler isn't by your diesel cap, it's in the boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- The previous driver will know. Check when you pick up a rental or company car — from Ravensthorpe's car park, perhaps — rather than when the warning appears.

## How to top up without AdBlue in your diesel tank

Wherever around West Yorkshire the light comes on, here is a routine for that day.

- Stop somewhere level, motor off, with time to spare — not rushing on the side of Pinfold Close.

- Daft as it sounds, speaking "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap works — after you have located your filler and read the cap.

- Leave your diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Tip slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it is full or when the bottle is empty.

- Shut the cap, then look again — confirm your diesel cap stayed closed the whole time. Only then, start the vehicle.

Find at step two or three that it's already gone into the diesel side? Then stop right there.

Don't carry on to step five.

## Flockton: already put AdBlue in your diesel tank?

Then the order of things is short. Don't start the engine.

Don't switch the ignition on; on many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

Topping up with diesel won't weaken it: instead, AdBlue sinks to the bottom of the tank, just where fuel is drawn from.

On a forecourt — BP, Shell or another — the staff will usually help roll the car clear, when you ask.

If you are on your own driveway around Flockton, leave the vehicle where it stands.

Stop as soon as it is safe then switch off, if the motor has already run.

Flockton lies under 5 miles from the M1; there, take the first exit.

Mileage matters — a short hop across Flockton is a smaller job than heading under 10 miles to Wakefield — so say roughly how far it went.

## Flockton: what happens when our engineers get there

Outside Flockton CofE (C) First School, near Flockton Church or on your own driveway: wherever your car has stopped, we come to it.

Our engineers ask what got in, roughly how much, and whether it's run, since the answers decide this work and our price.

Nobody sets off until you have heard the price by phone.

Next: a drain, then a full flush of the entire system.

More than with petrol, it matters with AdBlue: the crystals build up, some metals are attacked, and none of that washes away on its own, no matter how long it sits.

The fuel filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and the car is tested.

After that we start it and make sure it runs properly before we go.

Unrun vehicles mostly need a half-hour visit from the moment we arrive. The equipment is safe on a busy filling station, and quiet enough for a driveway late at night.

Nothing in advance; you settle up that day. Afterwards, the VAT invoice and the report from the engineer go to you for the insurer.

Misfuelling cover is part of many insurance policies — and so make use of the wait to look at yours.

Being a village, Flockton has the same vans as surrounding areas — Flockton Green, Crawshaw — right across WF postcodes and the wider area beyond.

Quote a postcode that starts WF4 4, and the van gets there fastest.

No need to move your car.

Anywhere it stands — near Miners' Memorial Garden, in a layby heading to Kirkby Wood, at home — that's where it gets emptied.

Awkward to pin down, like the back of St. Michael's Church, Emley? By a county line? Asking beats guessing, and so ring.

## The short version for Flockton motorists

Pour nothing until you have read the cap.

AdBlue in your diesel tank after all? Keep it switched off and phone 0333 366 0103; Petrol in Diesel drains it on the spot, across West Yorkshire.
