# How It Occurs and How to Avoid It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Flush

AdBlue already in the diesel tank? In that case set this page down a moment, leave the ignition and engine off, then ring 0333 366 0103.

In Flush, catching it before the engine runs usually leaves draining and a thorough flush where it stands.

Nothing happened yet? Further down, the page covers the why it happens and the how to avoid it for good.

## AdBlue in a diesel vehicle: two tanks, two fillers

Diesel feeds your motor — but many modern diesels driven around Flush and Westfield hold another liquid too.

Its own tank holds it, and from there it goes to your exhaust, and there a spray cleans the fumes.

Separate tanks, different fillers.

Under one flap, next to each other: that is the layout on many cars. On others, AdBlue's filler sits beneath the bonnet or in your boot instead.

At the petrol pump, the diesel side is topped up constantly.

The AdBlue side is topped up far less often, usually from a bottle, and usually by a person who has to stop and think where it goes.

That gap is where the slip lives.

## How does AdBlue in the diesel tank happen around Flush?

Rarely is it carelessness: usually three things line up.

On a drive off Willow Tree Court before work, or in the car park at Westgate 23 heading home: that's where the hurried top-up happens. What is the reason for the rush? As AdBlue runs low the car tells you, and if it is gone, limp mode kicks in.

Unfamiliar cars are second, too. Hire cars, new cars and company vehicles place their fillers differently, and the hand goes for the cap used on the old one.

No part stops the pour after it has started, because a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits.

Whether it occurs in Heckmondwike or the middle of Flush, it's the same few seconds.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

Before you pour anything, whether on a drive in Nunroyd or a forecourt around Flush, check these. They take a few seconds.

- Where it sits can mislead; the cap does not. AdBlue ones are often blue or carry the word "AdBlue" — diesel caps normally don't.

- The size. On many vehicles the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- A label inside your fuel flap often shows which fuel goes where, on many cars. Check for it.

- Can't find it beside your diesel filler? In that case look below the bonnet or in the boot — the handbook will say which.

- Check with the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — if you collect a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park outside Dewsbury.

## AdBlue top-ups that never reach your diesel tank

When the light comes on, anywhere across West Yorkshire, use this routine.

- Turn off once parked — flat ground, motor off, and not in a rush beside Wormald Street on the verge.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, after finding the AdBlue filler and reading it. Silly, perhaps, but it does the trick.

- Leave your diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Pour slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it is full or when the bottle is empty.

- Only after that, start the vehicle: close the cap, check a second time, and make sure your diesel cap was never opened.

Spot at step two or three that it has already gone into the diesel side? Then stop right there.

Don't go on to stage five.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank already, around Flush?

Then the order of things is short. Don't start the engine.

Don't switch your ignition on; on plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

Topping up with diesel won't dilute it: rather than mixing, AdBlue drops to the base of your tank, just where fuel is taken from.

If you are at a forecourt, whether it is the Texaco or the Morrisons, ask the staff to help push the car away from the petrol pump.

If you are on your own driveway around Flush, leave the car where it is.

Where your engine has run already, stop somewhere safe and turn it off.

On the M62, under 3 miles from Flush, that means the next exit.

Tell us about how far it went: a run towards Bradford, under 10 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Flush.

## Flush: what happens when our technicians turn up

Our technicians come to the vehicle wherever it has stopped, whether that is outside Millbridge, A Share Primary Academy, near Heckmondwike War Memorial or on your own driveway.

Those replies settle the work and our quote, so our technicians ask what was put in, about how much, and whether it's run.

The quote comes on the call, ahead of any van leaving.

Emptying your tank comes next, followed by a full flush of your system.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it does not wash out on its own — which is why that matters more here than with petrol.

Once your filter has been flushed — or replaced, if needed — clean diesel is added, and finally the vehicle gets tested.

The motor is started next and checked to make sure it runs properly, all before our engineers leave.

With pumps safe on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night, most jobs in which the engine has not run take about half an hour once we are there.

Nothing in advance; you settle up on the day. At the end, the VAT invoice and the report from the engineer go to you for the insurer.

Misfuelling cover is part of many insurance policies — so use the wait to check yours.

## Flush and West Yorkshire: AdBlue drains across the area

Flush is a residential suburb, and our teams that cover it also work the places near it, Mill Bridge and Lower Popeley among them, across the WF postcode area.

A postcode starting WF16 0 gets our van to you fastest.

The vehicle does not need to shift.

The drain takes place on the spot, be it a driveway, a street near Kanzul Iman, or a layby towards Demolished URC Chapelyard.

Assuming doesn't help at the back of Makki Mosque, on a boundary, or somewhere awkward to pin down; ring and check.

## The short version for Flush people

Read the cap before you pour.

If AdBlue has gone in your diesel tank anyway, leave it off and ring 0333 366 0103. Petrol in Diesel clears it where it stands, anywhere in West Yorkshire.
