# Why It Happens and How to Prevent It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Fochriw

Keep your engine and ignition off and call 0333 366 0103 first — reading can wait when AdBlue is already in your diesel tank.

Around Fochriw, finding it before your engine turns normally means a drain and a thorough flush where it stands.

If you are reading before it has happened, the remainder of this page is about why it happens and how to make sure it does not.

## Why does AdBlue in a diesel vehicle need its own filler?

Many newer diesels around Abertysswg, as well as Fochriw, carry on two fluids; your motor takes just your diesel.

Stored in a tank of its own, AdBlue is fed into the exhaust gas to clean it.

Every tank comes with one filler of its own.

Under one flap, side by side: that is the layout on many motors. On others, AdBlue's filler sits under the bonnet or in your boot instead.

Diesel goes in at every forecourt call-out, week in, week out.

Much less commonly, the AdBlue side is filled — normally from a bottle, by someone working out where it goes.

It's in the gap that the mistake lives.

## Fochriw: how AdBlue in your diesel tank happens

Three things tend to come together, and carelessness is seldom one of them.

First, the warning. Low AdBlue triggers a warning from the vehicle, and running dry means limp mode — hence a rushed top-up, perhaps before work off Railway Terrace, or at Mount Pleasant Inn on the way home that evening.

New-to-you motors are next, as well. Rentals, new cars and company cars put their fillers in new places, and habit goes for the cap used on the old one.

A spout-topped bottle meets no obstacle at a diesel filler no more than at an AdBlue one. And so the tip, after started, keeps on.

Pontlottyn or the middle of Fochriw: it is the same few seconds either way.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from the diesel filler

A few seconds is all these take — so run through them before you tip anything, on a driveway in Troedrhiwfuwch or a forecourt around Fochriw.

- Blue and lettering: an AdBlue cap is frequently blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap usually doesn't. Go by the cap, not its position.

- Look at the size: the smaller filler neck is, on many motors, the AdBlue one.

- A label inside the fuel flap often shows which fuel goes where, on plenty of cars. Look for it.

- In your boot or under the bonnet: that is where the filler is if it's not by the diesel cap, and the handbook tells you which.

- The previous driver knows. Ask when you pick up a rental or fleet car — at Pontlottyn's car park, say — not when the warning comes on.

## AdBlue top-ups that never reach the diesel tank

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever in Caerphilly that is.

- Not in a rush on the side of Station Terrace, not on a slope, not with the engine running: park then switch off properly.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, after finding the AdBlue filler and read it. Silly, yes, but it does the trick.

- The two behind one flap? Then make sure the lid on the diesel filler is still closed ahead of raising the bottle.

- Using the bottle's own spout, tip slowly — and stop when it's full or the bottle is empty.

- Only then, start your car: close the cap, check a second time, and make sure the diesel cap was never opened.

Discover during the second or third stage that the bottle went into the diesel filler? That is where you stop.

Never go on to stage five.

## Already put AdBlue in your diesel tank in Fochriw?

Short order, then. Top of that: your engine stays off.

Don't switch the ignition on; on many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

Filling up with diesel won't weaken it: rather than mixing, AdBlue drops to the base of that tank, just where the fuel is taken from.

The attendants at Gulf, Texaco or any forecourt will normally help pushing the vehicle clear when you ask.

On your own drive in Fochriw? Then your car remains where it is.

Stop as soon as it is safe and switch off, if the engine has already run.

The next exit is where to come off if you're on the M4, under 15 miles from Fochriw.

About how far did it go? Crossing Fochriw is smaller a job than a trip of under 25 miles towards Newport, and so say.

## What happens when we turn up in Fochriw

Outside the local primary school, close to Fochriw Pentecostal Mission or on your own driveway: wherever the vehicle has stopped, our engineers come to it.

What liquid was put in, the quantity, and if it ran: our technicians ask since those replies decide both work and quote.

The price comes on the call, ahead of any van leaving.

Then that tank is emptied and the system flushed thoroughly.

With AdBlue that matters more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it doesn't wash out on its own.

Your filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and your car is tested.

We don't leave until it has been fired up and is running smoothly.

Most jobs are done in roughly half an hour once we get there, as long as your motor hasn't run — and the pumps we use are fine on a busy forecourt and quiet after dark beside a house.

Paying happens on the day, not upfront, and you are given the paperwork your insurer asks for: an engineer's report and a VAT invoice.

It is worth looking at your insurance while we travel to you: misfuelling cover comes with plenty of policies.
