# AdBlue in the Diesel Tank in Ford? Keep It Switched Off

If AdBlue has got into the diesel tank, leave the motor off then keep your ignition off.

Water with urea mixed in it: that's AdBlue.

Not like fuel, it neither burns nor mixes, and nothing starts until the motor sucks it through.

In Ford, AdBlue in a diesel tank found before the engine runs normally comes down to a drain and a thorough flush, right where the car is.

Ring 0333 366 0103 before you do anything else.

## Ford, AdBlue in the diesel tank: what to do straight away

Do these:

- So no one can switch the ignition on, take the keys out.

- Hazards on, if moving traffic is anywhere close.

- The empty bottle or the receipt shows us the fluid and the amount, so don't throw it out.

- Call us from where you are. A postcode starting L21 0, or the name of the nearest street, brings the van to you without a search.

Not to do:

- Moving your vehicle just a short way is no reason to start your motor.

- Many diesels power their pump the moment your ignition comes on, and so leave the vehicle off.

- Pouring in more diesel does not help: AdBlue separates out rather than blending.

- Even a short stretch down Gorsey Lane is too far to drive the vehicle.

- By the road, don't try emptying it on your own.

At a forecourt around Ford, whether it is the the nearest petrol station or another one, ask the staff to help you push the vehicle clear of the petrol pump.

If you're on your own drive, leave the vehicle precisely where it stands.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does

Not the motor but the exhaust is where AdBlue belongs.

Stored in a dedicated tank, it is squirted into the exhaust stream to clean the fumes.

A fuel pump isn't designed to take it, and AdBlue was never intended to go through one.

Fuel mixes; AdBlue, once poured in, won't. The behaviour is nothing like fuel's.

It drops, because it is denser than diesel, and pools low where the intake draws its supply from.

A car filled on a drive in Netherton yesterday evening and left unstarted is the simple one. No pump has sucked the AdBlue up so far — though once the motor turns, that is what goes first, directly from the bottom of that tank.

Once it's pulled in, the harm takes two forms.

Crystals and corrosion. As the water dries, it strands urea that hardens in filters and tiny channels; meanwhile, because it attacks certain metals, every part it reaches keeps suffering for as long as it remains in there.

Overnight, a vehicle sitting around Ford with AdBlue in its lines gets worse; where it's just inside your tank, nothing changes.

Water protects nothing. The high-pressure pump and each injector need diesel running through them, so the water content harms them by itself.

## Why is AdBlue in a diesel frequently the bigger issue?

A fault of thinned fuel is what you get after fuelling a diesel with petrol from the Shell.

Blended through the diesel and sitting unused, it's no threat for now; running the motor does the harm.

AdBlue in a diesel is another problem: not thin fuel, yet no fuel at all.

Since it doesn't burn, running it through is not an option.

Whether the vehicle is in Great Crosby or the centre of Ford, firing it up "to see" does more harm in this case than nearly any other mistake, and the flush matters more. The reasons: it will not stay blended, so diluting it fails; and crystals and corrosion outlast the next fill.

With AdBlue, the good news is no separate from petrol.

If the engine hasn't run, the AdBlue is still in the tank, and the tank is the simplest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever in Merseyside the car is standing.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank in Ford: how it ends up there

Many vehicles put the AdBlue cap alongside the diesel cap, occasionally under a single flap, and in dim light the two can look the same. No one means it.

Usually it is never the forecourt: a driver buys a container driving home and tips it in outside the house.

Mostly, it takes place in one of a few familiar ways.

Hurrying, outside Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Primary School, after a warning lamp flashed on during the school run, a parent tops up your car.

Someone tips the bottle in at home, right off Lonsdale Close, as the day ends.

Or the car is topped up in the car park at Cooksons Bridge, in poor light, by someone who has never opened that flap before.

Hired vehicles, new motors, company cars, or the spare car in a family with both fuels: the least familiar cars get it most.

Keep it off: that is the first step to an identical mistake, anywhere in Ford or the remainder of Merseyside you are.

## Already started your engine with AdBlue in your diesel tank around Ford?

Then the AdBlue has left the tank.

Through the filter, through the pipework, and — given any running time — on to the high-pressure pump and each injector: that's how far it travels.

Maybe coming back from Ford Lane Community Garden, or part way across Ford, your motor might run rough, smoke, drop power, flash your dash or stall.

No restarting to test: stop once it is safe, then turn it off.

Each start pulls more of that through.

Ford lies under 3 miles from the M57; if you were on it, leave by the first junction and pull up safely instead of carrying on.

A quick hop across Ford to the car park by Our Lady Queen Of Peace Roman Catholic Church is one matter; heading towards Liverpool, under 10 miles away, is another, since each mile pushes the AdBlue further in. So mileage counts.

Roughly how far had it come? Tell us.

Once the motor has run, the flush covers more, and all of it is done where the vehicle has come to a stop.

If it is spotted soon, lasting damage is very unusual.

## What does an AdBlue drain on a diesel involve in Ford?

Wherever it has come to rest in Ford — a forecourt, a lay-by, a driveway, a street by Litherland Sports Park — the van comes to your car.

The job depends on three answers, and we ask for first — what went in, the quantity, and whether the motor has run.

Then that tank is drained where your car waits, so the contaminated fuel and the AdBlue come out together.

What remains from AdBlue will not wash out unaided, and so the fuel system gets a full flush, which matters much more with urea than for petrol.

After that, your filter: cleaned, or replaced when it must be. After that clean diesel, then a test of your vehicle.

Most of these jobs are a half-hour job once our engineers turn up, if your engine hasn't run.

The pumps are explosion-proof, fine on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night.

Clean diesel goes in to prime your system, and that's the final step.

Starting the car comes next, and then you drive off from where the car is parked, outside Seaforth & Litherland or on a drive in Ford.

It's checked on clean diesel to make sure it runs correctly before we head off.

Because the job is done in full where the vehicle is, a workshop never comes into it.

You get a VAT invoice and an engineer report after that, which is what insurers ask for.

## About Ford itself

Ford is a suburban area in Merseyside, situated near the coast and approximately 5 miles north of Liverpool. Ford has a relatively low elevation of 27 metres and is surrounded by other local areas such as Buckley Hill and Litherland. Ford is characterized by its predominantly terraced housing stock, which reflects the typical architectural style of the region. Ford is also close to Waterloo Park, a nearby green space.

## AdBlue drains across Merseyside, Ford included

AdBlue call-outs in Ford are passed to vans that cover the places near it — Buckley Hill, Litherland as well as Waterloo Park — and much of Merseyside further out, throughout L postcodes.

Near a border, or somewhere tricky to pin down? Checking beats assuming, and so ring.

No moving is needed. In Ford, a residential suburb, a van that comes to you works: the car is emptied where it stands, whether in a drive, a side street, a car park or a forecourt.

## Ford: what AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to fix

Not one flat figure could be fair, because every job differs.

Three things change the price: whether the engine has run and for how long, how much AdBlue went in, and where the car is. That last one rests on whether our van can get to it safely, and an open driveway is simpler than a tight gap behind St Paul's Church.

What went in, what quantity, and whether the engine ran: each Ford call opens by asking exactly those, before any figure, not after.

When they are answered, a range becomes a single firm figure.

Priced on the call before the engineer heads out, it is settled on the day — card or phone, no deposit.

Misfuelling cover is part of many insurance policies, so it is worth looking at yours before the van arrives.

## Ford: still alongside the vehicle?

Then, the best thing to do with your vehicle is to leave it.

Ignition off, motor off, keys out.

Call 0333 366 0103 and tell us it's AdBlue, roughly how much, and if it's run. Petrol in Diesel takes it from there, in Ford or anywhere in Merseyside.
