# How It Occurs and How to Avoid It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Forest Fields

AdBlue already in the diesel tank? In that case put this page down a moment, leave the ignition and engine off, and ring 0333 366 0103.

Normally, when the engine hasn't run, it's drained and thoroughly cleaned where the vehicle sits around Forest Fields.

If you're reading before it has happened, the remainder of this page is about why it takes place and how to make sure it does not.

## AdBlue in a diesel motor, and its separate tank

Many current diesels on the roads about Forest Fields and Mapperley Park carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to your engine.

AdBlue's own tank keeps it, and from there it goes to your exhaust, and there a spray cleans the gas.

Each tank has its own filler.

Under one flap, side by side: that is the layout on a lot of motors. On others, AdBlue's filler sits beneath the bonnet or in your boot instead.

Filling the diesel side at the petrol pump goes on all the time.

The AdBlue side is topped up far less frequently, normally from a bottle, and normally by somebody who has to stop and think where it goes.

That gap is where the slip lives.

## How does AdBlue in the diesel tank occur around Forest Fields?

Seldom is it carelessness: normally three things line up.

First, the warning. Low AdBlue triggers a message from the vehicle, and running dry leads to limp mode — so a rushed top-up, perhaps before work off Stanley Road, perhaps outside Lion Inn on the way home that evening.

Then your car is unfamiliar. A hire car, a new vehicle or a company car puts the fillers where your last one did not, and your hand reaches for the cap it would have used on the old one.

A spout-topped bottle finds no obstacle at a diesel filler no more than at an AdBlue one. So the pour, after started, carries on.

Hyson Green or the middle of Forest Fields: it is the same few seconds either way.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

Whether a Forest Fields forecourt or a driveway out in Radford, take a few seconds on these before any goes in.

- Check the cap rather than going by where it sits: AdBlue ones are regularly blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel caps normally aren't.

- Look at the size: the smaller filler neck is, on plenty of cars, the AdBlue one.

- The flap. Look inside the fuel flap for a label. Plenty of vehicles say there which fuel goes where.

- In the boot or under the bonnet: that is where your filler is if it's not by your diesel cap, and the handbook tells you which.

- The previous driver will know. Check when you collect a hire car or fleet car — from Nottingham's car park, say — not once the warning appears.

## How to top up without AdBlue in your diesel tank

On the day the light appears — anywhere you are in Nottinghamshire — a routine to use.

- Park and switch off. Not on a slope, not with the engine running, and not in a rush on the side of Windermere Road.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds silly and it does the trick.

- The two behind a single flap? So confirm the cap on your diesel side stays shut before lifting the bottle.

- Using the bottle's own spout, tip slowly — and stop when it's full or the bottle is empty.

- Before starting your car, close the cap and check again that your diesel cap never opened off.

If at step two or three you find you have already poured into the diesel side, stop there.

Stage five is out.

## Already put AdBlue in the diesel tank in Forest Fields?

Then the order of things is short. Do not start your motor.

On many diesels the ignition alone runs the fuel pump, so don't switch the vehicle on.

AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where your fuel is drawn from — so do not top up with diesel to thin it.

If you're at a forecourt, whether it is the Asda or the Shell, ask the staff to help roll the car clear of the petrol pump.

On your own drive around Forest Fields? Then the vehicle stays put.

If the engine has already run, stop as soon as it is safe and switch off.

Come off the M1 — under 5 miles out of Forest Fields — at the first junction.

Tell us about how far it went: a run towards Nottingham, under 3 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Forest Fields.

## What occurs when our technicians get there in Forest Fields

Outside Forest Fields Primary and Nursery School, near Djanogly Community Leisure Centre or on your own driveway: wherever your car has stopped, our engineers come to it.

Which liquid was put in, the amount, and if it ran: our technicians ask since the replies decide both work and quote.

You get that quote on the phone, before anybody sets off.

The system is then flushed thoroughly, after your tank is emptied.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it does not wash out on its own — which is why that matters more with AdBlue than with petrol.

Once your filter is cleaned — or replaced, if needed — clean diesel goes in, and then the vehicle gets tested.

The motor is started next and checked to be sure it runs correctly, all before our engineers leave.

If your motor hasn't run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once we're there, using pumps that are fine on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

Payment happens on the day, not upfront, and you are given the paperwork an insurer wants: an engineer report and a VAT invoice.

While we travel, take a look at your insurance documents; plenty include cover for misfuelling.

Your car does not need to move.

We drain it where it is — a side street near Jameah Fatimiah Mosque, a lay-by on the way to Peppers Gardens, a drive.

If you're close to a boundary, or somewhere hard to explain like the back of Forest Fields Community Centre, ring and ask rather than guessing.

## For Forest Fields people, the short version

Tip no AdBlue until you have read the cap.
