# Avoiding AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Forfar: Why It Occurs

Leave the engine and ignition off then ring 0333 366 0103 first — the rest can wait when AdBlue is already in your diesel tank.

Around Forfar, catching it before your engine turns normally leaves a drain and a full flush on the spot.

Nothing happened yet? Below, the rest of the page covers the reasons it takes place and the how to prevent it for good.

## AdBlue in a diesel motor, and its separate tank

Many current diesels on the roads about Forfar and Pitreuchie carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to your engine.

AdBlue goes to the exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to fresh it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Each tank has its own filler.

Plenty of cars have a single flap for both, while others move the AdBlue filler to the boot or under the bonnet.

Diesel goes in at each forecourt call-out, again and again.

A driver who has to stop and think where it goes usually fills the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and far less frequently.

That gap is where the slip lives.

## Forfar: how AdBlue in the diesel tank takes place

Carelessness rarely causes it. Instead is three things coming up together.

Haste follows from the warning. The car warns you as AdBlue runs low, and an empty tank sends it into limp mode — so the top-up happens quickly, before work on a driveway off West High Street, or heading home in the car park at The Osnaburg.

Then, your hand goes for the cap it would have used on the old vehicle — because a hire car, a new motor or a company car puts the fillers where your last one did not.

A spouted bottle finds no resistance at a diesel filler no more than at an AdBlue one. So the tip, after begun, carries on.

Whether it happens in South Whitehills or the middle of Forfar, it's the same few seconds.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

Before you tip anything, whether on a driveway in Balmashanner or a forecourt around Forfar, check these. They take a few seconds.

- Where it sits misleads; the cap doesn't. AdBlue ones tend to be blue or carry the word "AdBlue" — diesel caps usually do not.

- Many cars fit AdBlue the smaller filler of the two.

- The flap. Look inside your fuel flap for a label. Plenty of motors say there which fuel goes where.

- The handbook shows which it lives when the filler is not next to the diesel cap: your boot, or under the bonnet.

- The person who drove the car last. On a hire or company car collected from somewhere like the car park outside Monifieth, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching your diesel tank

The day the light goes on, anywhere around Angus, use this routine.

- Not in a rush on the side of Castle Street, not on a slope, not with the engine running: park then switch off first.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, once finding the AdBlue filler and reading it. Silly, perhaps, but it does the trick.

- The diesel cap remains on. Where both share a flap, make sure it's shut before lifting the bottle.

- Stop once that tank is topped up or the bottle is empty; before that, pour slowly through the own spout.

- Before you start your car, shut the cap and check again that the diesel cap never opened off.

Stop there if you find, at step two or three, that you have already poured into the diesel side.

Stage five is out.

## Already put AdBlue in the diesel tank around Forfar?

Then the order of things is short. Don't start the motor.

Keep your ignition off too, since on plenty of diesels switching it on alone runs your pump.

Don't top up with diesel to dilute it: AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of that tank, where your fuel is pulled from.

Ask the staff to help roll your car away from the petrol pump if you are at a forecourt — the Asda, the Shell or somewhere else.

Your own drive around Forfar is where it stays.

When your engine has been run by now, pull over somewhere safe then turn it off.

Forfar lies under 50 miles from the M90; there, use the next junction.

About how far did it go? Hopping across Forfar is less work than a run of under 15 miles to Dundee, and so say.

## Our arrival in Forfar, and what occurs next

Our technicians come to your car wherever it has stopped, whether that is outside the local primary school, near Meffan Institute Museum & Gallery or on your own drive.

Our engineers ask what went in, roughly how much, and if it has run, since the replies determine the work and our price.

You hear that price on the phone, before anybody sets off.

After that: a drain, then a full flush of the entire system.

Unlike petrol, AdBlue forms crystals and attacks some fuel-system metals, and neither clears out by itself. That is why it counts more.

Once the fuel filter has been cleaned — or replaced, where needed — clean diesel goes in, and then the car gets tested.

The engine is started next and checked to confirm it runs correctly, all before our technicians head off.

Using pumps safe on a working forecourt and quiet enough for use outside a house at night, most jobs where the engine has not run need roughly half an hour once our technicians arrive.

Paying is on the day, not upfront, and you receive the paperwork an insurer asks for: an engineer's report and a VAT invoice.

It is worth checking your insurance as the van travels to you: misfuelling cover comes with many policies.
