# How It Happens and How to Avoid It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Foulride Green

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave your motor and the ignition off and call 0333 366 0103.

Around Foulride Green, catching it before your engine turns normally leaves a drain and a thorough flush on the spot.

The rest of this page covers why it happens and how to make sure it does not — handy if you are reading before it has happened.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel car

Plenty of newer diesels around Polegate, as well as Foulride Green, run on two liquids; the engine takes just the diesel.

AdBlue goes to your exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to clean it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Every tank has one filler of its own.

Some cars keep the AdBlue filler in the boot or under the bonnet; plenty of others place both side by side under one flap.

At the pump, your diesel side gets filled constantly.

Someone who has to stop and think where it goes usually tops up the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and far less regularly.

It is in the gap that the mistake happens.

## Foulride Green: how AdBlue in your diesel tank occurs

Three things tend to line up, and carelessness is rarely one of them.

To start with, the warning. Low AdBlue brings a message from the vehicle, and letting it run dry leads to limp mode — hence a rushed top-up, maybe before work off Thurrock Close, perhaps outside The British Queen on the way home after work.

Unfamiliar motors are next, as well. Rentals, new motors and company vehicles put their fillers in new places, and the hand goes for the cap used on the old one.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, so nothing stops the tip once it has started.

It's seconds, be it in Lower Willingdon or bang in the heart of Foulride Green.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from your diesel filler

Whether a Foulride Green forecourt or a drive over in Filching, take a couple of seconds over these before any is poured in.

- Where it sits misleads; the cap does not. AdBlue caps are often blue or carry the word "AdBlue" — diesel caps normally don't.

- Check the size: the smaller filler neck is, on many motors, the AdBlue one.

- The flap. Look inside your fuel flap for a label. Plenty of vehicles say there which fuel goes where.

- Can't see it beside your diesel inlet? In that case look beneath the bonnet or inside your boot — the owner's manual will say where.

- The person who drove it last. On a hire or company car picked up from somewhere like the car park outside Polegate, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

## Keeping AdBlue out of the diesel tank when you top up

When the light goes on, wherever in East Sussex, use this routine.

- Turn off once parked — flat ground, engine stopped, and not in a rush by Willingdon Court at the roadside.

- Silly as it sounds, speaking "AdBlue" aloud while you unscrew the cap works — once you have located your filler and read the cap.

- Leave the diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Gently does it, through the bottle's own spout, till it's full or the bottle runs out.

- Only after that, start the vehicle: close the cap, check a second time, and make sure your diesel cap was never opened.

If at step two or three you find you have already poured into the diesel side, stop there.

Stage five stays out.

## Already put AdBlue in your diesel tank in Foulride Green?

Then the order of things is short. Don't start the motor.

On plenty of diesels the ignition alone runs the fuel pump, and so do not switch the car on.

Don't top up with diesel to dilute it: AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of the tank, where the fuel is sucked from.

If you are on a forecourt, whether it is the BP or the Esso, ask the attendants to help roll the vehicle clear of the pump.

Your own drive in Foulride Green is the place it should stay.

When your motor has run already, stop somewhere safe then turn it off.

Leave the M23 — under 50 miles out of Foulride Green — at the first exit.

A short hop across Foulride Green is a smaller job than a run towards Brighton and Hove, under 25 miles away, so tell us roughly how far it went.

## Our arrival in Foulride Green, and what happens next

We come to the car wherever it has stopped, whether that's outside Willingdon Primary School, close to Willingdon Library or on your own drive.

The answers determine this work and our price, and so our engineers ask what got in, roughly how much, and whether it's run.

The price comes over the phone, before any van leaves.

Then the tank is drained and your system purged thoroughly.

Not like petrol, AdBlue forms crystals and eats at some fuel-system metals, and neither clears away by itself. Hence it counts more.

Once the filter is flushed — or renewed, if required — clean diesel goes in, and finally your vehicle is tested.

The engine is started next and checked to make sure it runs properly, all before our engineers leave.

Using pumps fine on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night, most jobs where the engine has not run take roughly half an hour once we are there.

Paying happens on the day, not upfront, and you receive the paperwork an insurer asks for: an engineer's report and a VAT invoice.

It's worth checking your policy while we travel to you: misfuelling cover comes with plenty of policies.

Quote a postcode beginning BN20 9, and the van gets there fastest.

The vehicle remains where it is.

Our engineers drain it where it is — a side street near Trinity Church Hall, a lay-by on the way to Tott Yew recreation ground, a driveway.

Tricky to pin down, like the back of Trinity? Close to a county line? Checking is better than guessing, and so ring.

Tip nothing until you've read the cap.

If AdBlue has gone in the diesel tank all the same, leave the vehicle off then ring 0333 366 0103. Petrol in Diesel empties it where it sits, anywhere around East Sussex.
