# How It Occurs and How to Avoid It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Foulridge

AdBlue already in your diesel tank? In that case set this page down a moment, leave the ignition and motor off, and phone 0333 366 0103.

Usually, if the engine has not turned, it's drained and thoroughly purged where your vehicle is in Foulridge.

Not happened yet? Further down, the rest of the page explains the reasons it occurs and the how to avoid it altogether.

## AdBlue in a diesel motor, and its separate tank

Many modern diesels in Park Close, as well as Foulridge, carry on two liquids; your motor gets just your diesel.

AdBlue goes to the exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to fresh it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Each tank comes with one filler of its own.

Some cars keep the AdBlue filler in the boot or under the bonnet; plenty more place both together under one flap.

Diesel goes in at each filling station visit, again and again.

The AdBlue side is topped up far less regularly, usually from a bottle, and usually by someone who has to stop and think where it goes.

The mistake lives in that gap.

## How AdBlue in your diesel tank occurs in Foulridge

Three things tend to come together, and carelessness is rarely one of them.

Haste comes from the warning. The vehicle warns you as AdBlue runs low, and a dry tank puts the vehicle into limp mode — so the top-up gets done quickly, before work on a drive off Causeway, or heading home in the car park at Foulridge Club.

Then the car is new. A hire car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers where your last one did not, and the hand hits for the cap it would have used on the old one.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, so nothing stops the tip once it has started.

It's seconds, whether out in Colne Edge or bang in the heart of Foulridge.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from your diesel filler

Look at these before pouring, at a forecourt around Foulridge or a drive out in Waterside. Seconds, no more.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is often blue, or marked "AdBlue". Your diesel cap usually isn't. Read it rather than going by position.

- Plenty of motors fit AdBlue the smaller neck of the two.

- Check inside your fuel flap: plenty of cars have a label there saying which fuel goes where.

- Cannot find it beside the diesel filler? In that case check beneath the bonnet or inside the boot — the handbook says which.

- The person who drove the car last. On a hire or company car picked up from somewhere like the car park outside Colne, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching your diesel tank

For the day the warning comes on — anywhere you are around Lancashire — a simple routine to use.

- Not in a rush on the side of Skipton Road, not on a slope, not with the motor running: park then switch off first.

- Daft as it sounds, speaking "AdBlue" out loud while you unscrew the cap does the trick — once you have found the filler and read it.

- The diesel cap stays on. When both sit under a flap, make sure it is closed before lifting the bottle.

- Gently does it, through the bottle's own spout, until it's full or the bottle is empty.

- Shut the cap, and check once more — confirm the diesel cap stayed closed the whole time. After that, start the car.

Discover during the second or third stage that the bottle went into the wrong filler? That's where you stop.

Don't carry on to step five.

## Put AdBlue in the diesel tank in Foulridge already?

Brief order, then. Top of that: the motor remains off.

On many diesels your ignition alone runs the fuel pump, and so don't switch the vehicle on.

Thinning it with extra diesel fails, because AdBlue settles to the bottom instead of mixing — and that's where your fuel is drawn from.

The attendants at Sainsbury's, Total or any forecourt will usually lend a hand pushing your car away if asked.

Leave it where it is if you are on your own driveway around Foulridge.

Stop as soon as it is safe then switch off, if the motor has already run.

Leave the M65 — under 3 miles out of Foulridge — at the first junction.

Distance matters — a short hop across Foulridge is a smaller job than heading under 25 miles towards Bradford — so say roughly how far it went.

## Foulridge: what happens when our engineers arrive

By Foulridge Saint Michael and All Angels CofE Voluntary Aided Primary School, close to St Michael and all Angels or on your own drive: wherever the vehicle has stopped, we come to it.

The replies decide the work and the quote, and so our engineers ask what got in, about how much, and if it has run.

You hear that quote by phone, before anyone sets off.

Then the tank is cleared and your system purged thoroughly.

Not like petrol, AdBlue leaves crystals and attacks certain fuel-system metals, and none of that clears away unaided. Hence it counts more.

The filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and the car is tested.

Your engine is fired up next and checked to make sure it runs properly, all before our technicians go.

Most jobs are done in about half an hour after our engineers get there, as long as the motor hasn't run — and the pumps we use are fine on a busy forecourt yet quiet after dark outside a house.

Paying happens on the day, not upfront, and you are given the paperwork your insurer asks for: an engineer report and a VAT invoice.

Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it is worth checking yours whilst we're on the way.
