# AdBlue in the Diesel Tank in Fowlmere? Keep It Switched Off

If AdBlue has got into the diesel tank, keep the motor off then keep the ignition off.

AdBlue is urea mixed in water.

It doesn't burn, it does not mix with diesel, and the harm it does begins when the system pulls it in.

If the motor has not run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is generally drained and thoroughly flushed where the car stands around Fowlmere.

Before anything, ring us on 0333 366 0103.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank around Fowlmere: the first few minutes

To do:

- So nobody can turn the ignition on, take the keys out.

- If you are anywhere close to moving traffic, put your hazards on.

- The empty bottle or the till receipt tells us the product and the amount, and so do not bin it out.

- Give us a postcode starting SG8 7, or whichever street is nearest, and the van reaches you straight — so ring wherever you are.

Things not to do:

- Don't start your engine, even for a moment to shift the car.

- Don't switch your ignition on. On many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

- Adding extra diesel doesn't help: AdBlue separates out instead of thinning.

- Don't drive it anywhere, not even a short way up High Street.

- No emptying it yourself, at all, on the verge.

Ask the people behind the counter to help you move the vehicle off the pumps if you're on a forecourt around Fowlmere, whether it's the Esso or somewhere else.

At your own drive, don't touch it at all.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does

AdBlue is made for your exhaust, not the motor.

Stored in a dedicated tank, it is squirted into the exhaust stream to treat the fumes.

No part inside an injection pump is designed for this fluid — and no part of that was intended to go that way.

Poured in with the diesel, it stays apart rather than blending — quite different from fuel.

Denser than diesel, it drops and collects underneath it — the same spot the pickup sucks from.

Easiest of all: a vehicle that got AdBlue in Flint Cross overnight and has not turned since. The AdBlue waits at the foot of that tank, undrawn — but it would be the first thing through if the engine starts, before any diesel at all.

From there it causes two kinds of harm.

Crystals and corrosion. As the water evaporates, it strands urea that crystallises in filter elements and tiny channels; and, since it attacks certain metals, each part it reaches suffers for as long as it stays in there.

Where the AdBlue is in the lines, waiting overnight in Fowlmere leaves it worse. Inside your tank only, time costs nothing.

Water lubricates nothing. The high-pressure pump and every injector need diesel flowing through them, so the water content harms them by itself.

## Petrol or AdBlue in a diesel: why AdBlue is frequently worse

Petrol pumped into a diesel on Thames Petrol's forecourt makes the fuel thin — that is the whole problem.

It mixes with the diesel, and while it is inside that tank it causes no harm; the damage comes from running the motor on it.

AdBlue in a diesel is a problem of the wrong substance altogether.

Not burning, it cannot just be run through.

Nor can it be watered down, because it separates back out — and the next tankful will not rinse away deposits or corrosion. So the flush matters for more here, and trying the engine "to see", in the centre of Fowlmere or out in Shepreth, does more harm than almost any other error.

As with petrol, there is good news.

Anywhere around Cambridgeshire the car has come to rest, an unrun engine leaves the AdBlue still in the tank: the easiest bit of any fuel system to clear.

## Fowlmere: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

No one means to do it. The AdBlue filler on plenty of cars waits right next to the diesel filler, sometimes under the same flap, and the two caps can look alike in poor light.

It mostly happens at home, from a container bought on the journey home, rather than at the filling station.

It tends to take place in a few familiar ways.

Halfway through the morning drop-off, the dashboard warns, and outside Fowlmere Primary School the refill is rushed.

In the evening, a bottle is tipped in on a drive near Long Lane.

Or the vehicle is topped up in the car park outside The Chequers, in poor light, by a person who has never opened that flap before.

Hired cars, new cars, company vehicles, or the second vehicle in a family with one of each: the least known cars get it most.

Wherever you are around Fowlmere or the remainder of Cambridgeshire, it is the same slip and the same first answer: leave the vehicle off.

## Fowlmere: started the motor with AdBlue in your diesel tank?

In that case, the AdBlue is no longer in that tank.

With any running time, it goes on to the injection pump and every injector, having passed through the fuel filter and pipework.

Maybe coming back from The Butts, or part way across Fowlmere, your engine might run lumpy, smoke, drop power, flash your dash or cut out.

Stop when safe. Switch off. Keep it off rather than testing it again.

With each start, more of it is pulled through.

On the M11, under 3 miles from Fowlmere, the first junction is where to exit, and somewhere sensible is where to park — not carrying on.

A quick hop across Fowlmere to the car park by Fowlmere War Memorial is one thing; driving for Cambridge, under 10 miles away, is something else, since each mile pushes the AdBlue deeper in. So distance matters.

About how far it had come is worth telling us.

Once your engine has run, the flush covers more, and all of it is done where the car has stopped.

Lasting damage is very rare when it's noticed early.

## Clearing AdBlue in a diesel around Fowlmere: what it takes

Anywhere it has come to rest in Fowlmere — a filling station, a lay-by, a driveway, a street beside The Memorial Well and Pump — the van comes to your car.

The job depends on three replies, which we get first — which fluid went in, the quantity, and whether your engine has run.

On the spot, the tank is then drained, and both the polluted diesel and the urea come out as one.

A careful flush counts far more with AdBlue than with petrol, because residue won't wash away on its own.

Next, the fuel filter: flushed, or replaced if it must be. After that fresh diesel, and then a check of the car.

Most of these jobs are a half-hour job once we turn up, if the engine has not run.

Quiet enough for use outside a house at night, and fine on a working forecourt, the pumps are explosion-proof.

Priming your system with fresh diesel comes last.

Whether it is a parking space outside Foxton or a driveway in Fowlmere, that is where our engineers fire it up and you drive off.

Our engineers make sure it runs smoothly on new diesel before we go.

The entire job is done where your car is, so it never needs to go to a workshop.

You get a VAT invoice and an engineer report afterwards, which is what insurers want.

## About Fowlmere and where it is

Fowlmere is a village in Cambridgeshire, situated on the banks of the River Cam, with a low elevation of around 30 metres. Fowlmere lies approximately 8 miles south of Cambridge and 41 miles north of London, making it a commuter village with easy access to both cities. Fowlmere has a mix of old and new housing, but predominantly features detached homes, and is surrounded by nearby villages such as Thriplow and Foxton.

## Fowlmere and Cambridgeshire: AdBlue drains across the area

Thriplow, Foxton and Bridgefoot are among the places near Fowlmere that the same vans serve, together with most of Cambridgeshire further out, over the SG postcode area.

Phone and check rather than guess if you're by a county line, or somewhere awkward to pin down.

No towing is needed. In Fowlmere, a village, a van that comes to you fits: your vehicle is drained on the spot, whether on a drive, a residential street, a car park or a forecourt.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank around Fowlmere: the cost of fixing it

Because each callouts differ, a single figure wouldn't be honest.

Whether your engine has been running, and for how long, comes first in what shifts the cost. How much AdBlue went in comes next, and then the position of the car, because an open driveway is simpler for a van to get to safely than a tight space behind The Green.

For that reason, each call from Fowlmere begins with the same trio — which fluid got in, how much, if the engine ran — ahead of any quote.

Given them, the range shrinks to a single firm number.

Before a van sets off, you are told the quote by phone. Then payment is on the day, card or over the phone, with nothing upfront.

While our engineer is travelling, dig out your insurance: many include misfuelling.

## Fowlmere: still beside the vehicle?

Then, touch nothing — that's the best step available.

Keys out; engine and ignition off.

Say it was AdBlue, about what quantity, and if the engine ran, on 0333 366 0103. From there Petrol in Diesel takes over, in Fowlmere or wherever in Cambridgeshire.
