# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Fox Hatch? Don't Start It

With AdBlue in the diesel tank, your ignition stays off and so does the engine.

Chemically, AdBlue is just urea in water.

As it is water-based, it won't ignite and never combines with diesel; trouble just starts once the pump begins pulling it.

If the motor hasn't run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is usually emptied and thoroughly cleaned where your car sits around Fox Hatch.

First, phone us on 0333 366 0103.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank in Fox Hatch: the first few minutes

Do these:

- So no one can switch the ignition on, take the keys out.

- If you're anywhere near moving traffic, put the hazard lights on.

- Hold on to your receipt or the empty bottle, so you can tell us what got in and roughly how much.

- Call us from where you are. A postcode starting CM15 0, or the name of the nearest street, brings the van to you without a search.

Don't do these:

- Don't start the engine, even for a moment to shift the vehicle.

- Your ignition stays off: on lots of diesels, switching it on is enough to start the pump.

- Adding more diesel does not work: AdBlue separates out rather than blending.

- Do not drive it anywhere, not even a short stretch up Swan Lane.

- No draining it yourself, at all, at the roadside.

On a forecourt in Fox Hatch, whether it's the BP or another one, ask the staff to help you push your car away from the petrol pump.

At your own drive, do not move it at all.

## What does AdBlue do in a diesel tank?

Not the engine but the exhaust is where AdBlue belongs.

Its own tank keeps it, and from there it is fed into your exhaust, and there it cleans the fumes.

Nothing in it is supposed to pass through a fuel pump, and nothing in a fuel pump is made to handle it.

Poured in with the diesel, it stays separate rather than mixing — quite different from fuel.

The intake sucks fuel from the lowest part of that tank, and that is exactly where AdBlue settles: as it is denser than diesel, it sinks.

The first thing the fuel system pulls through, once it runs, is the AdBlue. So a motor that had AdBlue poured in on a drive in Bentley last night, and hasn't been started since, is still the easy case: the AdBlue is lying at the bottom of that tank, and nothing has sucked it in.

From there it does two kinds of harm.

It attacks certain metals found in fuel systems, attacking any part it touches till it's cleared from your system. And when the water goes, the urea forms crystals that block filters and lodge in tiny channels.

Overnight, a car parked in Fox Hatch with AdBlue in its lines grows worse; if it is only in that tank, nothing changes.

And there's the water: it offers no protection to the components that need it most — the high-pressure pump and each injector.

## Why is AdBlue in a diesel frequently the bigger issue?

Put petrol in a diesel at the Esso and you have a fault of thin fuel.

Harm only comes from running on it. Mixed into the diesel and sitting in that tank, it does nothing.

AdBlue in a diesel is a different matter: not thin fuel, but no fuel at all.

Since it does not burn, running it through is not an option.

Whether the vehicle sits in Navestock Side or the centre of Fox Hatch, turning it over "to see" does more harm with AdBlue than almost any other slip, and the flush counts more. The reasons: it won't remain mixed, and so watering it down fails; and deposits and corrosion survive the following tankful.

The same good news applies as with petrol.

If your engine has not run, the AdBlue is still in that tank, and your tank is the simplest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever across Essex your car is sitting.

## How does AdBlue end up in a diesel tank around Fox Hatch?

After dark, two caps side by side — the AdBlue cap and the diesel cap, occasionally under a single flap — may appear the same. No one means it; many layouts allow it.

Mostly it is never the forecourt: someone picks up a bottle driving home and tips it in outside the house.

The ways it happens are few and familiar.

The refill gets rushed outside Kelvedon Hatch Community Primary School, after the dash lit up with a warning as the children were dropped off.

In the evening, a bottle is tipped in on a drive near Fox Hatch.

Otherwise, after dark by The Shepherd Inn, your vehicle is topped up by a driver using that flap the first time.

It crops up most in a rental, a brand-new motor, a fleet car, or the other motor in a family with both fuels — the cars people know the least.

Keep it switched off: that's the first step to the same mistake, wherever around Fox Hatch or the rest of Essex you happen to be.

## Fox Hatch: started your engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank?

In that case, the AdBlue is no longer inside the tank.

Given any running time, it goes on to the high-pressure pump and every injector, after passing through your filter and pipework.

Rough running, smoke from the exhaust, dropping power, dashboard warnings or stalling: each may appear, maybe part way across Fox Hatch or coming back from the green space at the edge of the village.

Once safe, pull over and switch everything off — without turning it on again to see.

More of that is pulled through with each start.

On the M25, under 5 miles from Fox Hatch, the first junction is where to leave, and anywhere sensible is where to stop — not carrying on.

How far it went counts. A couple of hundred yards across Fox Hatch to the car park by Kelvedon Hatch Village Hall is a very different job from a run towards Chelmsford, under 10 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into the system with each mile.

About how far it had come is worth telling us.

Wherever the vehicle came to a stop is where all of it gets done, even with more to flush once the motor has been running.

Very seldom does it leave permanent damage when it's spotted soon.

## Fox Hatch: how AdBlue is drained from a diesel

A street by Abandoned Toilets, a driveway, a layby or a filling station: anywhere the vehicle has stopped around Fox Hatch, our engineers come to it.

The job rests on three answers, which our engineers get first — which fluid was put in, the quantity, and whether your motor has turned over.

Then your tank is cleared where the car stands, and so the contaminated fuel and the AdBlue come out together.

What remains from AdBlue will not flush out unaided, so the whole system gets a full flush, which matters far more here than with petrol.

The fuel filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and the vehicle is tested.

The majority of these jobs are a half-hour visit once our engineers get there, provided the engine has not run.

The pumps are explosion-proof, safe on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night.

Bleeding the fuel system with fresh diesel comes last.

Whether it is a parking space at Shenfield or a driveway in Fox Hatch, that is where our technicians start it and you set off.

Before we leave, our technicians confirm it's running properly with new diesel in.

The entire job is done where your car is, so it never needs to be taken to a garage.

You get a VAT invoice and an engineer report later, which is what insurers want.

## Fox Hatch and Essex: AdBlue drains across the area

Kelvedon Hatch, Doddinghurst Common and Doddinghurst are among the towns near Fox Hatch that the same vans reach, along with much of Essex further out, throughout the CM postcode area.

If you're near a border, or somewhere hard to explain, ring and ask instead of guessing.

Fox Hatch is a small village, and a call-out drain suits it: whether the vehicle is on a home drive, a residential street, a car park or a forecourt, our engineers drain it where it stands, so it never needs to be moved to us.

## What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right in Fox Hatch

There's no honest single price, because the jobs aren't the same.

Whether the engine has been running, and for how long, comes first in what moves the price. How much AdBlue went in comes next, and then the position of the vehicle, because an open driveway is simpler for our van to reach safely than a tight space behind Abandoned Shed.

Before a quote, not afterwards, each enquiry from Fox Hatch begins with three questions: the fuel, the amount, and whether it ran.

Once they are answered, a range turns into a single fixed number.

Quoted on the call before the engineer heads out, it is paid for on the day — card or phone, no deposit.

Look at your policy whilst we're on the way: plenty carry misfuelling cover.

## In Fox Hatch and still alongside the vehicle?

In that case, do nothing — that's the best move available.

Ignition off, motor off, keys out.

Call 0333 366 0103: AdBlue, the amount, plus whether the engine ran is all we ask. Petrol in Diesel handles the remainder across Essex, Fox Hatch too.
