# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Franche: How It Happens and How to Avoid It

Pause here a minute when your diesel tank already holds AdBlue in it: ignition off, engine off, then call 0333 366 0103.

Normally, when your engine has not turned, it is drained and fully flushed where your car sits in Franche.

The remainder of this page covers why it occurs and how to ensure it doesn't — handy if you are reading ahead of time.

## AdBlue in a diesel motor, and its separate tank

Plenty of modern diesels around Blakebrook, as well as Franche, run on two liquids; your motor gets just your diesel.

AdBlue goes to the exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to fresh it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Every tank comes with one filler of its own.

Under one flap, next to each other: that's the layout on many cars. On others, AdBlue's filler is beneath the bonnet or in the boot instead.

The diesel side is filled at the pump all the time.

The AdBlue side is topped up far less frequently, normally from a bottle, and normally by a person who has to stop and think where it goes.

That gap is where the slip lives.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank around Franche: how it takes place

Carelessness rarely causes it. Instead is three things lining up at once.

To start with, the warning. Low AdBlue triggers a message from the vehicle, and running dry means limp mode — so a rushed top-up, perhaps before work off Tynings Close, perhaps at Three Crowns & Sugar Loaf on the way home that evening.

Then, your hand goes for the cap it knew on the old vehicle — because a rental car, a new motor or a company car places the fillers where your last one did not.

A spout-topped bottle meets no resistance at a diesel filler any more than at an AdBlue one. So the pour, once begun, keeps on.

Whether it happens in Low Habberley or the middle of Franche, it is the same few seconds.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from the diesel filler

Before you tip anything, whether on a driveway in Kidderminster or a forecourt around Franche, check these. They take a couple of seconds.

- Colour and marking: an AdBlue cap is commonly blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap usually does not. Go by the cap, not where it sits.

- Check the size: the smaller neck is, on plenty of cars, the AdBlue one.

- The flap. Look inside your fuel flap for a label. Many vehicles say there which fuel goes where.

- In your boot or under the bonnet: that is where the filler is if it is not by the diesel cap, and the handbook tells you which.

- The person who drove the vehicle last. On a hire or company car picked up from somewhere like the car park outside Kidderminster, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

## Keeping AdBlue out of the diesel tank when you top up

For the day the warning comes on — anywhere you are across Worcestershire — a routine to use.

- Park and switch off. Not on a slope, not with your engine running, and not in a rush on the side of Wolverley Road.

- Locate the AdBlue filler, read the cap, and speak the word "AdBlue" out loud while unscrewing it. It sounds daft. It works.

- Leave your diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Using the bottle's own spout, pour slowly — and stop when it's full or the bottle is empty.

- Shut the cap, and look again — making sure the diesel cap stayed closed the whole time. Only then, start the car.

Discover during the second or third step that the bottle went in the wrong filler? That is where you stop.

Skip stage five altogether.

## Franche: already put AdBlue in your diesel tank?

What follows is a short order of things, beginning with no starting your motor.

On many diesels the ignition alone runs the fuel pump, and so don't switch it on.

Do not top up with diesel to dilute it: AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where your fuel is drawn from.

If you're on a forecourt, whether it's the Esso or the Sainsbury's, ask the attendants to help roll the car away from the pump.

If you are on your own driveway in Franche, leave the car where it sits.

Stop as soon as it is safe then switch off, if your engine has already run.

The next junction is where to leave if you're on the M5, under 10 miles from Franche.

A short hop across Franche is a smaller job than a run towards Wolverhampton, under 15 miles away, so tell us about how far it went.

## When our technicians get there around Franche, what occurs?

Our van reaches your car anywhere it has come to rest — your own drive, near St. Barnabas Community Hall, or by Franche Primary School.

Both the work and our quote rest on three answers — which liquid, what quantity, and if it has run — so our technicians ask.

Nobody heads out until you've heard our price over the phone.

After that: draining, then a full flush of the whole system.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it does not wash out on its own — which is why that matters more with AdBlue than with petrol.

The fuel filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and the vehicle is tested.

Before leaving, we fire it up and check that it is running properly.

If your engine has not run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once we are there, using pumps that are fine on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer.

Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it's worth checking yours whilst we are on the way.

Your car does not need to shift.

Draining takes place on the spot, whether a driveway, a street by St Barnabas, or a lay-by on the way to Kidderminster Carolians RFC.

Guessing won't help at the back of Kidderminster Baptist Church, on a border, or somewhere hard to pin down; phone and ask.
