# Friars Mead: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Prevent It?

Keep your motor and ignition off and call 0333 366 0103 now — reading can wait if AdBlue is already in the diesel tank.

Usually, when the motor hasn't turned, it's drained and fully purged where the vehicle sits in Friars Mead.

Nothing happened yet? Further down, the page explains the why it occurs and the how to avoid it for good.

## AdBlue in a diesel vehicle, and its separate tank

Not one liquid but two: that's how many modern diesels around Friars Mead and Calford Green carry, with diesel feeding the motor.

AdBlue goes to your exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to clean it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Every tank has a filler of its own.

On a lot of motors the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in the boot or under the bonnet.

At the pump, the diesel side gets filled all the time.

The AdBlue side is fuelled far less regularly, normally from a bottle, and normally by somebody who has to stop and think where it goes.

The error lives in that gap.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank around Friars Mead: how it happens

It's hardly ever carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

First, the warning. Low AdBlue triggers a message from the vehicle, and letting it run dry means limp mode — so a hurried top-up, maybe before work off Hill Lane, or outside The Red Lion on the way home that evening.

Next, the hand reaches for the cap it knew on the old car — since a hire car, a new vehicle or a company car places the fillers somewhere your last one did not.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, so nothing stops the tip once it has started.

It's seconds, whether out in Sturmer or right in the heart of Friars Mead.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from your diesel filler

Whether a Friars Mead forecourt or a driveway out in Wilsey, take a couple of seconds on these before any goes in.

- Check the cap instead of going by position: AdBlue caps are commonly blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel ones normally aren't.

- On plenty of vehicles, size gives it away: AdBlue gets the smaller filler neck.

- Look inside the fuel flap: plenty of motors have a label there saying which fuel goes where.

- The handbook. If your filler isn't by the diesel cap, it's in the boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- Picking up a hire or company car, say at the car park at Dullingham? Ask whoever drove the car last before leaving, rather than when the light comes on.

## How to top up without AdBlue in your diesel tank

The day the light goes on, wherever across Essex, use this routine.

- Park then switch off. Not on a slope, not with the engine running, and not in a rush on the side of Water Lane.

- Find the AdBlue filler, check the cap, and speak the name "AdBlue" aloud while you unscrew it. It seems silly. It works.

- Both behind one flap? So make sure the cap on the diesel filler is still shut before lifting the bottle.

- Pour slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it is full or when the bottle is empty.

- Only then, start the car: close the cap, check once more, and make sure the diesel cap was never opened.

Find at step two or three that it has already gone into the diesel side? Then stop just there.

Don't carry on to step five.

## Already put AdBlue in your diesel tank in Friars Mead?

Do not start the engine: that is where the short order of things starts.

Don't switch your ignition on; on many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

AdBlue does not mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where the fuel is drawn from — so do not top up with diesel to thin it.

At a forecourt — Esso, JET or any other — the attendants will usually help push the vehicle clear, if you ask.

On your own drive in Friars Mead? So the car stays put.

Already run? Stop when it is safe, then switch off.

Leave the M11 — under 15 miles out of Friars Mead — at the first exit.

Roughly how far did it go? Hopping across Friars Mead is smaller a job than a run of under 25 miles towards Cambridge, and so say.

## What happens when our technicians turn up around Friars Mead

Outside Coupals Primary Academy, close to Sturmer Village Hall or on your own driveway: wherever the car has stopped, our technicians come to it.

We ask what was put in, roughly how much, and whether it's run, since the answers determine the work and the price.

On the call itself, you hear the quote — before anything else.

Then your tank is cleared and the fuel system purged thoroughly.

Unlike petrol, AdBlue forms crystals and attacks some fuel-system metals, and neither clears out by itself. That is why it counts more.

The fuel filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and the vehicle is tested.

The engine is fired up next and checked to confirm it runs correctly, all before our technicians head off.

If your engine hasn't run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once we're there, using pumps that are fine on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

Paying happens on the day, not upfront, and you receive the paperwork your insurer asks for: an engineer's report and a VAT invoice.

Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it is worth checking yours whilst we are on the way.
