# Frodingham: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Prevent It?

AdBlue already in the diesel tank? In that case set this page down for now, leave the ignition and engine off, then ring 0333 366 0103.

Usually, when your engine has not turned, it's drained and thoroughly cleaned where your vehicle sits in Frodingham.

The remainder of this page explains why it takes place and how to ensure it doesn't — useful if you're reading ahead of time.

## Why does AdBlue in a diesel motor need its own filler?

Many newer diesels around Lincoln Gardens, as well as Frodingham, carry on two liquids; the motor takes just your diesel.

AdBlue goes to your exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to clean it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Every tank comes with a filler of its own.

Some motors keep the AdBlue filler in your boot or under the bonnet; a lot more have both side by side under one flap.

Diesel goes in at every filling station call-out, week in, week out.

The AdBlue side is topped up far less regularly, usually from a bottle, and usually by somebody who has to stop and think where it goes.

Mistakes happen in the gap between them.

## How does AdBlue in your diesel tank occur around Frodingham?

Carelessness rarely explains it. What does is three things lining up at once.

Hurry follows from the warning. The car warns you as AdBlue runs low, and a dry tank puts it into limp mode — so the top-up gets done quickly, before work on a driveway off Cottage Beck Road, or on the way home in the car park outside Talbot.

Then the car is new. A hire car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers where your last one did not, and your hand reaches for the cap it would have used on the old one.

Lastly, the bottle goes in: a diesel filler or AdBlue filler, it goes in just as readily, and once the pour begins, nothing halts it.

It's a few seconds, whether out in Scunthorpe or right in the centre of Frodingham.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from your diesel filler

Whether a Frodingham forecourt or a driveway out in Old Brumby, spend a couple of seconds over these before any is poured in.

- Position misleads; the cap does not. AdBlue caps tend to be blue or bear the name "AdBlue" — diesel ones normally don't.

- The size. On many cars the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- Check inside your fuel flap: plenty of cars carry a label there saying which fuel goes where.

- The handbook. If the filler isn't by the diesel cap, it's in the boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- The person who drove the car last. On a hire or company car picked up from somewhere like the car park at Scunthorpe, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

## Keeping AdBlue out of the diesel tank when you top up

For the day the light appears — anywhere you are in Lincolnshire — a simple routine to use.

- Park then switch off. Not on a slope, not with the engine running, and not in a rush on the side of Fairmont Crescent.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds silly and it does the trick.

- The diesel cap stays on. Where the two sit under a flap, make sure it is closed before the bottle comes up.

- Pour slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it's full or when the bottle is empty.

- Before you start your car, shut the cap and check again that the diesel cap never came off.

Find at stage two or three that it's already gone into the diesel side? Then stop just there.

Don't go on to step five.

## Frodingham: already put AdBlue in the diesel tank?

Then the order of things is short. Do not start your engine.

The fuel pump starts on many diesels as soon as the ignition is switched on — so leave it off.

Topping up with diesel won't weaken it: instead, AdBlue sinks to the bottom of your tank, just where fuel is drawn from.

The attendants at JET, Applegreen or any forecourt will normally help pushing the car clear when asked.

At home around Frodingham? So your car remains where it is.

Stop as soon as it is safe then switch off, if the engine has already run.

Frodingham sits under 3 miles from the A1077(M); there, take the first junction.

Distance counts — a quick hop across Frodingham is a smaller job than driving under 25 miles to Kingston upon Hull — so say roughly how far it went.

## What occurs when we arrive around Frodingham

Outside Frodingham Infant School, near The Plowright Theatre or on your own drive: wherever your car has stopped, we come to it.

Both the work and the quote rest on three answers — what fluid, what amount, and if it has run — so we ask.

The price is given over the phone, ahead of any van leaving.

Emptying the tank comes next, then a thorough flush of your system.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it does not wash out on its own — which is why the flush counts more with AdBlue than with petrol.

The filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and the vehicle is tested.

The motor is started next and checked to confirm it runs smoothly, all before our technicians go.

If the motor hasn't run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once we are there, using pumps that are fine on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

No money upfront; you settle up that day. Afterwards, the VAT invoice and a report from the engineer are handed to you for your insurer.

Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it's worth checking yours whilst we're on the way.
