# Preventing AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Frostlane: Why It Happens

AdBlue already in the diesel tank? Then set this page aside for now, leave your ignition and motor off, and phone 0333 366 0103.

In Frostlane, catching it before your motor runs usually means draining and a full flush where it stands.

Not happened yet? Further down, the page covers the why it takes place and the ways to avoid it altogether.

## AdBlue in a diesel vehicle, and its separate tank

Not one fluid but two: that's how plenty of newer diesels near Frostlane and Hardley carry, with diesel for the engine.

AdBlue's own tank keeps it, and from there it goes to your exhaust, where a spray cleans the gas.

Each tank has its own filler.

Other motors put the AdBlue filler in your boot or under the bonnet; plenty of others place the two together under one flap.

At the petrol pump, your diesel side gets filled all the time.

Rarely filled, AdBlue usually goes in from a bottle, poured by someone who must stop and think which cap to use.

It is in the gap that the error lives.

## How AdBlue in the diesel tank occurs around Frostlane

Carelessness rarely causes it. Instead is three things coming up together.

On a driveway off Victory Court before work, or in the car park outside The Glen on the way home: that is where the rushed top-up happens. Why the rush? As AdBlue runs low the vehicle tells you, and once it is empty, limp mode follows.

Then the vehicle is strange. A hire car, a new motor or a company car puts the fillers where your last one didn't, and your hand reaches for the cap it would have used on the old one.

A spout-topped bottle finds no resistance at a diesel filler no more than at an AdBlue one. And so the pour, after begun, carries on.

Buttsash or the middle of Frostlane: it takes the same few seconds either way.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from your diesel filler

Be it a Frostlane forecourt or a driveway out in Little Holbury, spend a few seconds on these before anything goes in.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is often blue, or marked "AdBlue". The diesel cap normally isn't. Read it rather than going by where it sits.

- Look at the size: the smaller filler neck is, on plenty of vehicles, the AdBlue one.

- Check inside your fuel flap: plenty of cars have a label there showing which fuel goes where.

- Cannot find it beside your diesel filler? In that case look below the bonnet or inside the boot — the handbook will say which.

- The person who drove the vehicle last. On a hire or company car collected from somewhere like the car park at Netley, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

## AdBlue top-ups that never reach the diesel tank

On the day the light comes on — anywhere it is around Hampshire — a routine to use.

- Park then switch off. Not on a slope, not with your engine running, and not in a rush on the side of Hardy Drive.

- Silly as it sounds, speaking "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap works — once you've found your filler and read the cap.

- The diesel cap stays on. When the two share a flap, confirm it is shut before the bottle comes up.

- Slowly does it, through the bottle's own spout, until it's full or the bottle is empty.

- Close the cap and check once more. Make sure your diesel cap was never opened. Only then start the vehicle.

Discover during the second or third stage that AdBlue went into the diesel filler? That's where you stop.

Skip step five entirely.

## Frostlane: already put AdBlue in your diesel tank?

What follows is a short order of things, starting with not starting your motor.

Do not switch your ignition on; on plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where your fuel is pulled from — so don't top up with diesel to dilute it.

At a forecourt — Esso, Shell or another — the attendants will usually help push the vehicle away, when you ask.

If you are on your own driveway in Frostlane, leave the car where it sits.

Already started? Stop when it is sensible, then turn off.

On the M27, under 5 miles from Frostlane, that means the next junction.

A short hop across Frostlane is a smaller job than a run towards Southampton, under 5 miles away, so tell us about how far it went.

## What takes place when we turn up around Frostlane

By Waterside Primary School, close to Waterside Children's Centre or on your own drive: wherever the car has stopped, our engineers come to it.

Those replies decide this work and our quote, and so we ask what went in, about how much, and if it's run.

You get that quote by phone, before anyone heads out.

Then the tank is emptied and the fuel system purged thoroughly.

With AdBlue that counts more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it does not wash out on its own.

The fuel filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and your car is tested.

Before leaving, our engineers start the engine and check that it's running smoothly.

Unrun cars usually mean a half-hour job after the moment we arrive. The kit is safe on a live forecourt, and quiet enough for a driveway after dark.

You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer.

Misfuelling cover is included in plenty of insurance policies — so make use of the wait to look at yours.
