# Why It Occurs and How to Prevent It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Fulbourn

Leave the motor and ignition off then phone 0333 366 0103 first — reading can wait when AdBlue is already in your diesel tank.

Usually, if the motor hasn't run, it's drained and thoroughly flushed where your car is in Fulbourn.

If you are reading before it has happened, the rest of this page is about why it occurs and how to make sure it does not.

## Why does AdBlue in a diesel motor need its own filler?

No single liquid but two: that's how plenty of newer diesels around Fulbourn and Great Wilbraham carry, with diesel for the engine.

Its own tank keeps it, and from there it goes to the exhaust, and there a spray cleans the fumes.

There's a filler on each tank.

Under one flap, side by side: that is the layout on many cars. On others, AdBlue's filler is under the bonnet or in the boot instead.

The diesel side is fuelled at the pump all the time.

Rarely filled, AdBlue usually comes out of a bottle, poured by someone who has to stop and think which cap it needs.

The mistake grows in the gap between the two.

## How AdBlue in the diesel tank happens in Fulbourn

It is rarely carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

Hurry follows from the warning. The vehicle tells you as AdBlue runs low, and an empty tank sends the vehicle into limp mode — so the top-up gets done in a rush, before work on a drive off High Street, or heading home in the car park outside Six Bells.

Then, the hand reaches for the cap it would have used on the old vehicle — since a hire car, a new car or a company car places the fillers where your last one did not.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, and so nothing stops the tip once it has started.

Frog End or the heart of Fulbourn: it takes the same few seconds either way.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from the diesel filler

A few seconds is all the checks take — so check them before you tip anything, on a driveway in Little Wilbraham or a forecourt around Fulbourn.

- Where it sits misleads; the cap doesn't. AdBlue ones are often blue or bear the name "AdBlue" — diesel ones usually do not.

- Look at the size: the smaller neck is, on many motors, the AdBlue one.

- Look inside your fuel flap: plenty of cars have a label there showing which fuel goes where.

- Can't find it beside the diesel inlet? Then look below the bonnet or inside your boot — the owner's manual says where.

- Ask the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — when you pick up a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park at Cambridge.

## How to top up without AdBlue in your diesel tank

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever across Cambridgeshire that is.

- Not in a rush on the side of Apthorpe Street, not on a slope, not with the motor running: park and switch off first.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds silly and it works.

- Leave your diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Gently is best, through the bottle's own spout, till it is full or the bottle runs out.

- Close the cap and check once more. Make sure the diesel cap was never opened. Only then start the vehicle.

Spot at stage two or three that it has already gone into the diesel side? So stop right there.

Step five is off limits.

## Fulbourn: already put AdBlue in your diesel tank?

Short order, then. First: the engine remains unstarted.

On many diesels your ignition alone runs the fuel pump, so do not switch the vehicle on.

Thinning it with extra diesel won't work, since AdBlue settles to the base instead of mixing — and that's where the fuel is pulled from.

The attendants at Tesco, Teversham Motors or any forecourt will usually lend a hand pushing the car away when asked.

If you're on your own drive around Fulbourn, leave it where it is.

When your engine has been run by now, pull over safely and turn it off.

Fulbourn sits under 10 miles from the M11; on it, take the next junction.

Tell us about how far it went: a run towards Cambridge, under 5 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Fulbourn.

## What happens when we get there in Fulbourn

Wherever your car came to rest, whether outside Fulbourn Primary School, near "twelve" or at home, our van travels to it.

We ask what went in, about how much, and if it's run, since those replies decide the work and our price.

During the phone call itself, you are told the price — ahead of anything else.

The fuel system is then rinsed thoroughly, after your tank is cleared.

More than with petrol, it counts with AdBlue: crystals build up, certain metals are attacked, and none of it washes out unaided, however long it sits.

After your filter has been cleaned — or replaced, if required — clean diesel goes in, and then the car gets tested.

Before leaving, our technicians start it and check that it is running correctly.

If your motor has not run, most jobs take about half an hour once we're there, using pumps that are fine on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

The insurer will ask for an engineer's report and the VAT invoice, and you get both once the job is done. Payment comes on the day, with no money upfront.

It's worth looking at your insurance while we travel to you: misfuelling cover comes with many policies.
