# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Fulwood: Why It Happens and How to Prevent It

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave your engine and your ignition off then call 0333 366 0103.

Caught before your motor runs, it's generally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is around Fulwood.

If you are reading before it has happened, the rest of this page is about why it occurs and how to make sure it does not.

## AdBlue in a diesel vehicle, and its separate tank

Plenty of modern diesels on the roads around Fulwood and Lodge Moor carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to your motor.

Stored in a tank of its own, AdBlue is sprayed into the exhaust stream and cleans it.

Different tanks, different fillers.

On a lot of cars the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in the boot or under the bonnet.

Filling the diesel side at the petrol pump happens all the time.

Someone who has to stop and think where it goes normally fills the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and far less commonly.

Mistakes happen in that gap between them.

## How does AdBlue in the diesel tank take place around Fulwood?

Three things tend to line up, and carelessness is seldom one of them.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low your car tells you, and if it runs out completely, your vehicle drops into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a drive off Canterbury Crescent before work, or in the car park outside The Fulwood Ale Club on the way home.

New-to-you motors are second, as well. Rentals, new motors and company cars place their fillers differently, and habit goes for the cap used on the old one.

No part stops the pour once it has started, since a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as readily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits.

Goole Green or the middle of Fulwood: it takes the same few seconds either way.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

Look at these before pouring, on a forecourt around Fulwood or a drive out in Hallam Head. Seconds, that's all.

- Check the cap instead of going by where it sits: AdBlue ones are frequently blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel caps usually aren't.

- The size. On many vehicles the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- Open the flap and check for a label — plenty of vehicles show which goes in which inlet just there.

- Can't see it next to your diesel inlet? Then check beneath the bonnet or inside the boot — the handbook will say where.

- The person who drove the car last. On a hire or company car collected from somewhere like the car park outside Dore & Totley, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

## Keeping AdBlue out of the diesel tank when you top up

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever across South Yorkshire that is.

- Turn off once parked — level ground, motor off, and never rushed by Barncliffe Glen at the roadside.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, after you find the AdBlue filler and reading it. Daft, perhaps, but it does the trick.

- If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — and leave the car on.

- Tip slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it's full or when the bottle is empty.

- Only then, start the car: close the cap, check a second time, and make sure the diesel cap was never opened.

Find at stage two or three that it has already gone into the diesel side? Then stop just there.

Leave out stage five entirely.

## Put AdBlue in your diesel tank in Fulwood already?

The short order of things, starting with no starting your engine.

On many diesels your ignition alone runs the fuel pump, so do not switch it on.

Filling up with diesel will not thin it: instead, AdBlue drops to the base of that tank, right where the fuel is drawn from.

On a forecourt — Esso, JET or any other — the staff will normally help push your car clear, when you ask.

Leave it where it is if you are on your own driveway around Fulwood.

When your engine has been run by now, pull over safely and switch the car off.

Leave the M1 — under 10 miles out of Fulwood — at the first junction.

Mileage matters — a quick hop across Fulwood is a smaller job than driving under 5 miles to Sheffield — so tell us about how far it went.

## When our engineers get there in Fulwood, what takes place?

Our technicians come to the vehicle wherever it has stopped, whether that's outside Hallam Nursery & Primary School, near Fulwood Sports Club or on your own drive.

Both the work and our quote depend on three replies — what fluid, which amount, and if it has run — so our technicians ask.

Nobody sets off before you have heard our price over the phone.

Next: a drain, then a full flush of the entire system.

With AdBlue that matters more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it doesn't wash out on its own.

After your filter has been flushed — or renewed, if required — fresh diesel goes in, and finally the car gets tested.

Before we leave, we start the car and make sure that it's running properly.

Most jobs are finished in about half an hour once our engineers arrive, provided your engine has not run — and the pumps our engineers use are safe on a live forecourt yet quiet after dark outside a house.

Your insurer usually wants the engineer's report and your VAT invoice, and both are yours at the end. Payment is on the day, with no deposit.

It is worth looking at your insurance as the van travels to you: misfuelling cover comes with many policies.
