# Furze Platt: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Leave It Off

With AdBlue in the diesel tank, the ignition stays off and so does the motor.

Water with urea mixed in it: that is AdBlue.

It doesn't burn, it does not mix with diesel, and the damage it does starts when the system pulls it in.

A drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is in Furze Platt, is normally all AdBlue in a diesel tank takes — if it's caught before the motor has run.

Before you do anything else, call 0333 366 0103.

## What to do straight away, Furze Platt: AdBlue in the diesel tank

Things to do:

- Take the keys out, and so nobody switches your ignition on.

- Put your hazards on if you are anywhere close to moving traffic.

- Which product, and about what amount? Save the bottle or the receipt, and our technicians can see.

- Our van locates you fastest with a postcode starting SL6 7, or just the name of a street nearby, and so phone from the car.

Never do these:

- Not even for a second, and not to roll your vehicle: your motor remains off.

- Don't switch the ignition on. On plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

- No extra fuel added. The AdBlue will not mix, and so it's wasted.

- Keep the car where it is rather than driving it anywhere, even a short way up Gardner Road.

- Emptying the tank on your own beside the road is not worth trying.

Ask the attendants to help you roll your vehicle off the island if you're at a forecourt around Furze Platt, whether it's the BP or elsewhere.

Stopped on your own drive? Then it remains just where it is.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does

AdBlue is made for the exhaust, not your motor.

It goes into its own tank and is sprayed into the exhaust gas to fresh it.

A fuel pump isn't designed to cope with it, and AdBlue was never supposed to travel through one.

Tipped in with the diesel, it keeps apart rather than blending — quite different from fuel.

It sinks, since it's heavier than diesel, and settles low where the intake takes its supply from.

Easiest of all: one that had AdBlue in Boyn Hill last night and hasn't been started since. The AdBlue waits at the foot of that tank, undrawn — but it will be the first thing through if your engine runs, ahead of any diesel at all.

It does two kinds of harm from there.

As its water goes, the urea left behind crystallises, and the crystals block filters and settle in fine passages. And it is corrosive to some of the metals a fuel system is made from, so it keeps labouring on the parts it gets to for as long as it remains there.

Overnight, a vehicle parked in Furze Platt with AdBlue through its pipework grows worse; where it is just inside the tank, it doesn't.

The water in it does harm of its own: the high-pressure pump and your injectors rely on diesel to lubricate them, and water offers them nothing.

## Why is AdBlue in a diesel regularly the bigger problem?

A problem of thinned fuel is what you get from filling a diesel with petrol at the Esso.

Mixed into the diesel and left unused, it's no threat at that stage; using the engine is the damage.

AdBlue in a diesel is a problem of the wrong substance altogether.

Because it does not burn, running it through isn't an option.

Nor can it be thinned, since it separates back out — and the next tankful will not clear away crystals or corrosion. So the flush matters more here, and turning your key "to see", in the heart of Furze Platt or out in Cookham Rise, costs more than nearly any other error.

The good news is the same as with petrol.

Wherever in Berkshire your car has come to rest, an unrun motor means the AdBlue yet in the reservoir: the simplest part of any fuel system to empty.

## How AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank in Furze Platt

Plenty of vehicles place the AdBlue filler alongside the diesel cap, occasionally behind a single flap, and after dark the two can appear identical. Nobody means it.

It mostly happens outside the house, from a bottle bought en route home, not at the filling station.

The ways it happens are few and familiar.

Midway through the drop-off, the dashboard warns, and outside Furze Platt Junior School the top-up is rushed.

After work, a container is tipped in on a drive near Switchback Road North.

Else, after dark by Craufurd Arms, the vehicle gets topped up by someone opening that flap for the first time.

The least known vehicles see it the most — hire cars, brand-new ones, fleet cars, and the other car of a home with one of each fuels.

Wherever you're in Furze Platt or the remainder of Berkshire, it is the same error and the same first answer: leave the vehicle off.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank around Furze Platt, and your engine started?

The AdBlue has left your tank, then.

Through the filter, through the lines, and — with any running time — on to the high-pressure pump and every injector: that's where it has gone.

Expect rough running, smoke, lost power, warnings on your dash, or a cut-out — coming back from Summerleaze Village FC, perhaps, or part way across Furze Platt.

No starting it again to test: stop when safe, then switch it off.

Each start pulls more of it through.

If you were on the A404(M), under 3 miles from Furze Platt, come off at the next junction and stop somewhere sensible rather than pressing on.

Each mile pushes the AdBlue further into the system. That is why a hop across Furze Platt to park near Cannon Court Chalk Pit and a drive of under 25 miles towards St Albans are such different jobs.

Roughly how far it had come is worth telling us.

Wherever your car came to a halt is where all of it gets done, even with more to clean out once your engine has been started.

Long-term damage is very unusual if it's caught quickly.

## Furze Platt: how AdBlue is emptied from a diesel

The car stays put, whether that is a street beside St Peter's Church, a driveway, a lay-by or a filling station around Furze Platt, and the van travels to it.

The job depends on three answers, and our technicians get before all else — what was put in, the quantity, and if the motor has run.

Next, draining that tank right there takes out the polluted diesel and the AdBlue in one go.

With AdBlue, more so than with petrol, the flush matters: the fuel system is cleaned all the way through because what remains won't flush out by itself.

Your filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and your car is tested.

If the motor has not run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once our engineers arrive.

Explosion-proof pumps make a busy forecourt safe to work on, and they run quiet enough to spare the street at night.

Last, the system is primed with new diesel.

You head off as soon as we have started the engine, and it makes no difference whether your car is on a driveway in Furze Platt or in a space by the nearest station.

We check it runs correctly on new diesel before leaving.

The whole job is done where your car is, so it never needs to be taken to a workshop.

Your insurer is likely to want an engineer's report and the VAT invoice — each handed over once this job is done.

## AdBlue drains around Furze Platt and across Berkshire

Guessing doesn't help close to a border or somewhere tricky to pin down; phone and ask.

Wherever your vehicle sits — a drive at home, a side street, a parking area, a forecourt — our engineers empty it on the spot, with no need to take it to us; that suits Furze Platt, a residential suburb, well.

## Furze Platt: what AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to fix

Since the jobs differ, a flat price wouldn't be honest.

What shifts the price is, firstly, whether the motor has run and for how long; then how much AdBlue was put in; and then where your car is and whether a technician can get to it safely, which is easier on an open driveway than in a tight spot behind Furze Platt War Memorial Hall.

For that in mind, every call from Furze Platt opens by asking the identical trio — which fluid got in, how much, whether it ran — ahead of any quote.

Those replies turn a range into a straight quote.

Before anyone heads out, you hear the price by phone. Then payment is on the day, card or over the phone, with nothing in advance.

As the van is on the way, dig out your policy: many cover misfuelling.

## Next to your car around Furze Platt, right now?

Then, do nothing — that's the most helpful step available.

Engine off, keys out, ignition off.

Call 0333 366 0103 then tell us it is AdBlue, about how much, and whether it has run. Petrol in Diesel takes it from there, in Furze Platt or anywhere in Berkshire.
