# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Garden Village: How It Happens and How to Stop It

Leave your engine and ignition off then phone 0333 366 0103 now — the rest can wait if AdBlue is already in the diesel tank.

Usually, if the engine has not run, it is emptied and fully cleaned where the vehicle sits around Garden Village.

If you're reading before it has happened, the remainder of this page is about why it occurs and how to make sure it does not.

## AdBlue in a diesel motor: two tanks, two fillers

Plenty of current diesels on the roads about Garden Village and Longsowerby carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to your motor.

Stored in a tank of its own, AdBlue is fed into your exhaust gas and cleans it.

Each tank has its own filler.

Under one flap, next to each other: that is the layout on many vehicles. Elsewhere, AdBlue's filler sits beneath the bonnet or in your boot instead.

Diesel gets filled on each forecourt visit, week in, week out.

Much less regularly, the AdBlue side is topped up — mostly from a bottle, by someone thinking about where it goes.

It is in the gap that the mistake happens.

## Garden Village: how AdBlue in the diesel tank takes place

It's rarely carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

First, the warning. Low AdBlue brings a message from the vehicle, and letting it run out leads to limp mode — so a hurried top-up, maybe before work off Glaramara Drive, perhaps outside Border Reiver Inn on the way home that evening.

Then, your hand reaches for the cap it knew on the old car — because a hire car, a new motor or a company car places the fillers where your last one didn't.

Third, the spout fits: diesel filler or AdBlue one, it slides in as readily, and after the tip starts, nothing stops it.

Newby West or the heart of Garden Village: it is the same few seconds either way.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

Before you tip anything, whether on a driveway in Belle Vue or a forecourt in Garden Village, check these. They take a couple of seconds.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is regularly blue, or marked "AdBlue". The diesel cap normally is not. Read it instead of going by position.

- On many vehicles, size tells: AdBlue gets the smaller filler neck.

- A label inside your fuel flap frequently says which fuel goes where, on plenty of cars. Check for it.

- In your boot or under the bonnet: that is where your filler is if it's not by the diesel cap, and the handbook tells you which.

- Whoever had it before will know. Check as you collect a hire car or company car — at Carlisle's car park, perhaps — rather than when the light appears.

## AdBlue top-ups that never reach the diesel tank

When the light goes on, anywhere in Cumbria, follow this routine.

- Park then switch off. Not on a slope, not with the engine running, and not in a rush on the side of Helvellyn Rise.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, once finding the AdBlue filler and read it. Silly, perhaps, but it does the trick.

- The diesel cap remains on. When the two share a flap, make sure it is closed before the bottle comes up.

- Stop once the tank is topped up or the bottle runs dry; until then, pour slowly through its built-in spout.

- Close the cap, and check once more — confirm your diesel cap remained shut the whole time. Only then, start the car.

If at stage two or three you find you have already poured into the diesel side, stop there.

Don't carry on to step five.

## Already put AdBlue in the diesel tank around Garden Village?

Don't start the motor: that's where the short order of things starts.

The fuel pump starts on plenty of diesels as soon as your ignition is switched on — and so keep it off.

Topping up with diesel will not thin it: rather than mixing, AdBlue sinks to the bottom of the tank, right where the fuel is taken from.

Ask the staff to help roll the car away from the pump if you are at a forecourt — the Asda, the Sainsbury's or anywhere else.

If you're on your own driveway around Garden Village, leave it where it sits.

Already started? Pull over when it is safe, then switch off.

On the M6, under 5 miles from Garden Village, that means the next exit.

A short hop across Garden Village is a smaller job than a run towards Carlisle, under 3 miles away, and so tell us roughly how far it went.

## Our arrival around Garden Village, and what takes place next

The van comes to the car wherever it has come to rest — your own drive, beside St Luke, Morton, Carlisle, or by Newlaithes Infant School.

Both the work and the quote depend on three answers — what liquid, what amount, and if it has run — so our engineers ask.

On the phone call itself, you are told our quote — before dispatch.

Then the tank is cleared and the system purged thoroughly.

More than with petrol, it matters here: the crystals build up, some metals corrode, and nothing washes away on its own, no matter how long it sits.

The filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and the vehicle is tested.

Next our engineers start the car and confirm it runs properly before leaving.

Unstarted cars usually need a half-hour job after the moment we arrive. The equipment is safe on a busy filling station, and hushed enough for a driveway late at night.

Nothing in advance; you settle up that day. Afterwards, the VAT invoice and a report from the engineer go to you for the insurer.

Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it is worth checking yours while we're on the way.
