# How It Occurs and How to Avoid It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Gateside

Pause here a minute if your diesel tank already has AdBlue in it: ignition off, motor off, and ring 0333 366 0103.

Caught before your motor runs, it's usually a drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is in Gateside.

If you are reading before it has happened, the rest of this page is about why it occurs and how to make sure it does not.

## AdBlue in a diesel vehicle: two tanks, two fillers

Many newer diesels in North Auchneagh, like those in Gateside, run on two fluids; your engine takes just your diesel.

Stored in a tank of its own, AdBlue is sprayed into your exhaust gas to clean it.

Separate tanks, separate fillers.

Under one flap, side by side: that is the arrangement on a lot of cars. On others, AdBlue's filler is beneath the bonnet or in the boot instead.

The diesel side is fuelled at the petrol pump all the time.

Seldom filled, AdBlue usually goes in from a bottle, tipped by a driver who must stop and think what cap to use.

It is in that gap that the error happens.

## How AdBlue in the diesel tank happens in Gateside

Three things tend to line up, and carelessness is rarely one of them.

Hurry comes from the warning. The vehicle tells you as AdBlue runs low, and a dry tank sends the vehicle into limp mode — so the top-up happens quickly, before work on a drive off Rose Street, or on the way home in the car park outside The Broomhill Tavern.

New-to-you motors are second, as well. Hire cars, new vehicles and company motors put their fillers differently, and habit goes for the cap it used on the old one.

No part stops the pour once it has started, since a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits.

It takes a few seconds, whether in Barrs Cottage or right in the centre of Gateside.

## The AdBlue filler and the diesel filler: telling them apart

Be it a Gateside forecourt or a drive out in Smithston, spend a few seconds over these before anything goes in.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is regularly blue, or marked "AdBlue". Your diesel cap normally isn't. Read it instead of going by where it sits.

- Check the size: the smaller neck is, on plenty of cars, the AdBlue one.

- The flap. Look inside the fuel flap for a label. Plenty of vehicles say there which fuel goes where.

- Cannot see it next to the diesel filler? In that case look beneath the bonnet or inside your boot — the owner's manual will say which.

- The person who drove it last. On a hire or company car collected from somewhere like the car park outside Branchton, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

## Keeping AdBlue out of your diesel tank when you top up

The day the light comes on, anywhere around Inverclyde, follow this routine.

- Not in a rush on the side of Florence Street, not on a slope, not with the motor running: park then switch off properly.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds daft and it works.

- Both behind one flap? Then make sure the cap on your diesel filler is still shut ahead of lifting the bottle.

- Tip slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it's full or when the bottle is empty.

- Before starting the vehicle, close the cap and look a second time that the diesel cap never came off.

Find at step two or three that it's already gone into your diesel side? Then stop just there.

Leave out step five altogether.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank already, in Gateside?

Don't start the engine: that's where the short order of things starts.

Leave your ignition off too, since on plenty of diesels it alone runs your pump.

Do not top up with diesel to dilute it: AdBlue does not mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of that tank, where your fuel is sucked from.

Ask the staff to help push the vehicle clear of the pump if you are on a forecourt — the BP, the Tesco or anywhere else.

If your motor has already run, stop as soon as it is safe and switch off.

The next junction is where to come off when you're on the M8, under 10 miles from Gateside.

A short hop across Gateside is a smaller job than a run towards Glasgow, under 25 miles away, and so tell us about how far it went.

## When our technicians get there around Gateside, what happens?

Anywhere the car has stopped, be it by the local primary school, near Watt Cairn or on your own drive, our van travels to it.

Which liquid went in, the quantity, and whether it ran: our engineers ask since the replies set the work and quote.

On the phone call itself, you hear our price — ahead of dispatch.

Then that tank is drained and the fuel system rinsed thoroughly.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it doesn't wash out on its own — which is why the flush matters more with AdBlue than with petrol.

Your filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and your car is tested.

The motor is fired up next and checked to be sure it runs smoothly, all before our engineers head off.

Unstarted cars mostly need a half-hour visit from the moment we arrive. The equipment is safe on a live filling station, and hushed enough for a residential street after dark.

Paying is on the day, not upfront, and you receive the paperwork your insurer wants: an engineer report and a VAT invoice.

It is worth looking at your policy while we travel to you: misfuelling cover comes with many policies.
