# Why It Occurs and How to Avoid It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Gaultree

Keep your motor and ignition off and ring 0333 366 0103 first — the rest can wait if AdBlue is already in your diesel tank.

Normally, when your engine has not turned, it is drained and fully purged where the car is in Gaultree.

The rest of this page covers why it takes place and how to make sure it does not — useful if you are reading ahead of time.

## AdBlue in a diesel motor, and its separate tank

Many current diesels on the roads round Gaultree and Colletts Br carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to the engine.

The exhaust, not the engine, is where AdBlue goes: sprayed into the fumes to fresh them, from its own tank.

Each tank has a filler of its own.

Under one flap, side by side: that is the layout on a lot of vehicles. On others, AdBlue's filler is beneath the bonnet or in your boot instead.

Diesel goes in on every forecourt visit, again and again.

Someone who has to stop and work out where it goes normally tops up the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and far less commonly.

The error lives in that gap.

## How does AdBlue in the diesel tank happen around Gaultree?

Rarely is it carelessness: usually three things line up.

First, the warning. Low AdBlue triggers a message from the vehicle, and letting it run dry leads to limp mode — so a rushed top-up, maybe before work off Hollycroft Road, perhaps at Gaultree Inn on the way home that evening.

The old car's filler is where your hand reaches — yet a hire car, a new motor or a company car keeps the fillers elsewhere. That's a second factor: an unfamiliar vehicle.

Lastly, the bottle goes in: a diesel filler or AdBlue one, it goes in as readily, and once the tip begins, nothing stops it.

The same few seconds settle it, in the middle of Gaultree or out in Emneth.

## The AdBlue filler and your diesel filler: telling them apart

Before you pour anything, whether on a driveway in Emneth Hungate or a forecourt in Gaultree, check these. They take a couple of seconds.

- Check the cap instead of going by position: AdBlue ones are regularly blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel caps normally are not.

- Look at the size: the smaller neck is, on many motors, the AdBlue one.

- A label inside your fuel flap often says which fuel goes where, on many vehicles. Check for it.

- The handbook says where it lives when your filler isn't next to your diesel cap: your boot, or under the bonnet.

- Picking up a hire or company car, perhaps at the car park at Downham Market? Check with the person who drove it last before you set off, rather than once the light goes on.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching your diesel tank

When the light comes on, wherever in Norfolk, follow this routine.

- Not in a rush on the side of Hungate Road, not on a slope, not with the engine running: park then switch off first.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, after you find the AdBlue filler and read it. Silly, perhaps, but it works.

- If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — and leave the car on.

- Tip slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it is full or when the bottle is empty.

- Shut the cap, then check again — making sure the diesel cap stayed closed the whole time. After that, start the car.

If at step two or three you find you have already poured into the diesel side, stop there.

Skip stage five entirely.

## Gaultree: already put AdBlue in your diesel tank?

Brief list, then. First: your motor stays unstarted.

The fuel pump starts on plenty of diesels as soon as your ignition goes on — and so keep it off.

Diluting it with more diesel fails, because AdBlue sinks to the bottom instead of mixing — and that is where the fuel is sucked from.

Ask the attendants to help push the vehicle away from the pump if you're at a forecourt — the Morrisons, the Bloom & Wake Ltd or anywhere else.

At home around Gaultree? So the car remains put.

Where your engine has run by now, stop somewhere safe and switch the car off.

On the A1(M), under 25 miles from Gaultree, that means the next exit.

Roughly how far did it go? Crossing Gaultree is smaller work than a run of under 25 miles towards Ely, so say.

## What takes place when our technicians turn up in Gaultree

Our van reaches the vehicle anywhere it has come to rest — your own driveway, beside Saint Edmund, or outside Emneth Academy.

Which liquid was put in, the amount, and whether it ran: our engineers ask since those replies set the work and price.

The price is given on the call, before any van leaves.

Then that tank is cleared and the fuel system flushed thoroughly.

Much more than with petrol, it counts with AdBlue: the crystals build up, certain metals corrode, and none of it washes away unaided, no matter how long it is left.

The filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and the car is tested.

The motor is started next and checked to confirm it runs correctly, all before our engineers leave.

Using pumps safe on a working forecourt and quiet enough for use outside a house at night, most jobs where your motor hasn't run take about half an hour after our engineers are there.

Paying is on the day, not upfront, and you receive the paperwork your insurer asks for: an engineer's report and a VAT invoice.

Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it's worth checking yours while we're on the way.

## AdBlue drains around Gaultree and across Norfolk

Gaultree is a residential suburb, and the vans that cover it also work the towns near it, Holly End and Chequers Corner among them, across the PE postcode area.

Quickest of all: give a PE14 8 postcode for the van.

There's no need to move the car.

Anywhere it stands — near Emneth Village Sign, in a lay-by heading to Emneth Playing Field, on a drive — that is where it gets emptied.

If you're close to a border, or somewhere hard to describe like the back of The Elm Centre, ring and ask rather than guessing.

## The short version for Gaultree motorists

Pour no AdBlue until you've read the cap.

Even so AdBlue in the diesel tank? Petrol in Diesel can empty it wherever it stands, wherever across Norfolk: switch the vehicle off and ring 0333 366 0103.
