# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Geeston: How It Happens and How to Avoid It

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave your motor and your ignition off and call 0333 366 0103.

Normally, when your motor has not turned, it's drained and fully purged where the car is in Geeston.

If you are reading before it has happened, the rest of this page is about why it takes place and how to make sure it doesn't.

## Why does AdBlue in a diesel vehicle need its own filler?

Diesel feeds the motor — but many newer diesels driven round Geeston and Easton on the Hill hold a second fluid as well.

Stored in a tank of its own, AdBlue is sprayed into your exhaust gas to clean it.

Each tank has its own filler.

Under one flap, next to each other: that is the layout on many vehicles. On others, AdBlue's filler is under the bonnet or in the boot instead.

The diesel side is topped up at the pump all the time.

Someone who has to stop and work out where it goes usually tops up the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and far less regularly.

It is in the gap that the error lives.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank in Geeston: how it takes place

Carelessness seldom explains it. Instead is three things coming up at once.

Hurry follows from the warning. The car tells you as AdBlue runs low, and a dry tank puts the vehicle into limp mode — so the top-up happens in a rush, before work on a drive off Edmonds Drive, or heading home in the car park outside The Railway Inn.

New-to-you motors come next, too. Hire cars, new cars and company motors place their fillers differently, and habit reaches for the cap it used on the old one.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, and so nothing stops the pour after it has started.

The same few seconds decide it, in the middle of Geeston or out in Aldgate.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from your diesel filler

Before you tip anything, whether on a driveway in Tinwell or a forecourt around Geeston, check these. They take a few seconds.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is often blue, or marked "AdBlue". Your diesel cap usually is not. Read it rather than going by where it sits.

- On plenty of vehicles, the size gives it away: AdBlue gets the smaller filler neck.

- Check inside the fuel flap: plenty of cars carry a label there showing which fuel goes where.

- Can't see it next to your diesel filler? In that case check below the bonnet or in your boot — the owner's manual will say which.

- Check with the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — if you collect a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park at Stamford.

## Keeping AdBlue out of your diesel tank when you top up

The day the light goes on, anywhere around Rutland, use this routine.

- Turn off once parked — flat ground, motor stopped, and never rushed by Station Road at the roadside.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds silly and it works.

- The two behind a single flap? So make sure the cap on the diesel filler is still closed before lifting the bottle.

- Gently is best, through the bottle's own spout, till it is full or the bottle runs out.

- Close the cap and check a second time. Make sure the diesel cap was never opened. Only then start the vehicle.

Spot at step two or three that it has already gone into your diesel side? Then stop just there.

Don't go on to step five.

## Already put AdBlue in your diesel tank in Geeston?

What follows is a short order of things, starting with not starting your engine.

On many diesels the ignition alone runs the fuel pump, so do not switch the vehicle on.

Filling up with diesel won't dilute it: rather than mixing, AdBlue drops to the base of the tank, just where the fuel is taken from.

On a forecourt — BP, Morrisons or another — the attendants will usually help roll your car away, when you ask.

Leave it where it is if you're on your own drive in Geeston.

If your motor has already run, stop as soon as it is safe and switch off.

Come off the Great North Road — under 15 miles out of Geeston — at the first junction.

Mileage matters — a quick hop across Geeston makes a smaller job than driving under 15 miles to Peterborough — so tell us about how far it went.

## Geeston: what occurs when we arrive

The van comes to the car anywhere it stopped — your own driveway, beside Methodist Chapel, or by Ketton Church of England Primary School.

Those replies settle this work and the price, so we ask what got in, roughly how much, and whether it has run.

During the phone call itself, you hear our price — ahead of dispatch.

The fuel system is then cleaned thoroughly, after that tank is drained.

Much more than with petrol, it counts here: crystals build up, certain metals are attacked, and none of that washes away on its own, however long it is left.

The fuel filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and your car is tested.

Before we leave, our technicians start the car and confirm that it is running properly.

If your engine hasn't run, most jobs take about half an hour once we're there, using pumps that are safe on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

Nothing upfront; you settle up that day. At the end, the VAT invoice and the report from the engineer are handed to you for the insurer.

While we travel, take a look at your policy; plenty carry cover for misfuelling.

## About Geeston itself

Geeston is a locality situated on the shores of Rutland Water in the East Midlands, with an elevation of around 45 metres. ## Geeston and Rutland: AdBlue drains across the area

As a small village, Geeston shares its vans nearby places — Ketton, Collyweston — all the way through PE postcodes and the surrounding area around them.

A postcode starting PE9 3 gets our van to you fastest.

The vehicle doesn't need to shift.

Draining takes place on the spot, be it a drive, a street near St Mary the Virgin, Ketton, or a lay-by towards multisports pitch.

Ring and ask instead of assuming if you are near a boundary, or somewhere hard to explain, like the back of Ketton Centre.

## In short, for Geeston drivers

Tip nothing till you've read the cap.

If AdBlue has gone in your diesel tank all the same, leave it off then phone 0333 366 0103. Petrol in Diesel drains it where it sits, anywhere around Rutland.
