# Gelli: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Leave It Off

AdBlue in your diesel tank? Then leave your motor off — and your ignition as well.

Chemically, AdBlue is simply urea in water.

Not like fuel, it neither ignites nor mixes, and nothing starts till your motor sucks it round.

In Gelli, AdBlue in a diesel tank found before your motor runs usually comes down to a drain and a thorough flush, right where the car is.

No step comes before ringing 0333 366 0103.

## Your next steps right now, Gelli: AdBlue in your diesel tank

Do:

- Pull the keys out, and so nobody switches your ignition on.

- Near moving traffic? So put the hazards on.

- Hold on to your receipt or the empty bottle, so you can tell us what went in and roughly how much.

- Call us from where you are. A postcode starting CF41 7, or the name of the closest street, gets our van to you without a search.

Don't:

- Shifting your car just a few yards is no reason to start the engine.

- Turning your key to ignition by itself starts the pump going on many diesels. Skip it.

- No extra fuel added. The AdBlue won't blend, and so it's pointless.

- Keep it where it is instead of driving it anywhere, even a short way up Ravenhill Street.

- Draining that tank on your own beside the road is not worth trying.

Moving your vehicle off the pumps is a job for staff to help with, whichever Gelli forecourt you're on, the Texaco or any other.

Stopped on your own drive? Then it remains just as it is.

## What AdBlue does in a diesel tank

The motor is not what AdBlue is made for; the exhaust is.

It goes into its own tank and is sprayed into your exhaust gas to fresh it.

Nothing in it is meant to pass through a fuel pump, and nothing in a fuel pump is made to handle it.

Tipped in with your diesel, it stays apart rather than blending — quite different from fuel.

Heavier than diesel, it sinks and pools underneath it — the same place the intake sucks from.

Easiest of all: a vehicle that had AdBlue in Ystrad last night and hasn't been started since. The liquid sits at the foot of that tank, undrawn — though it will be the first thing through once the engine starts, ahead of any diesel at all.

Once it's drawn in, the harm comes in two forms.

As its water goes, the urea left behind crystallises, and the crystals block filters and settle in fine passages. And it is corrosive to some of the metals a fuel system is made from, and so it keeps labouring on the components it hits for as long as it stays there.

Overnight, a car parked in Gelli with AdBlue through its pipework gets worse; if it is just inside your tank, it doesn't.

The water in it causes harm of its own: the high-pressure fuel pump and the injectors rely on diesel to lubricate them, and water gives them nothing.

## Why is AdBlue in a diesel regularly the bigger fault?

A problem of thinned fuel is what you get after filling a diesel with petrol from the Shell.

It mixes with the diesel, and whilst it is inside your tank it causes no harm; the damage comes from running your engine on it.

AdBlue in a diesel is a fault of the wrong substance altogether.

It cannot simply be run through, since it does not burn.

Crystals and corrosion remain after the next tankful, and AdBlue splits again from your diesel, so thinning it won't help. That is why the flush counts more, and trying the engine "to see" does more harm with AdBlue than nearly any other slip — in Clydach Vale or the heart of Gelli equally.

The same good news applies as with petrol.

If the motor hasn't run, the AdBlue is still in that tank, and the tank is the quickest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever across Rhondda Cynon Taf the car is sitting.

## How does AdBlue end up in a diesel tank around Gelli?

No one means to do it. The AdBlue filler on many vehicles rests right next to your diesel filler, at times under the same flap, and the two caps can look alike in poor light.

A bottle picked up when heading home and poured in outside the house, instead of at the forecourt, is the typical story.

The ways it happens are few and familiar.

The top-up is rushed outside the local primary school, after your dash flashed with a warning while the children were taken in.

In the evening, a bottle goes in on a drive near Tyisaf Road.

Or your car is topped up in the car park outside The Gelli Hibernia, in poor light, by someone who has never opened that flap before.

Rented motors, brand-new vehicles, fleet motors, or the spare vehicle in a family with both fuels: the least known cars get it the most.

Leave it off: that is the first response to an identical mistake, wherever in Gelli or the rest of Rhondda Cynon Taf you happen to be.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank in Gelli, and the engine started?

If so, the AdBlue is no longer inside that tank.

The filter and lines have had it pulled along, and any running time takes it on to the injection pump and each injector.

Rough running, smoke, lost power, dashboard warnings or cutting out: any might show up, maybe part way across Gelli or returning from Gelli Park.

Once safe, pull over and turn it off — with no turning it on again to see.

Each start pulls more of it through.

If you were on the M4, under 10 miles from Gelli, come off at the next junction and stop somewhere sensible instead of pressing on.

How far it went matters. A few hundred yards across Gelli to the car park by Bronllwyn Mission Methodist Church is a very different job from a run towards Cardiff, under 25 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into the system with every mile.

Tell us roughly how far it had come.

Wherever the vehicle came to a stop is where all of it gets done, even with more to rinse out once the engine has been running.

Spotted early, it very seldom leaves long-term damage.

## What does an AdBlue drain on a diesel involve in Gelli?

A road by Mount Zion Pentecostal Church, a driveway, a layby or a filling station: wherever your car has come to rest around Gelli, our technicians travel to it.

Three replies decide the work, so first our engineers ask which fluid got in, roughly what quantity, plus whether the engine has run.

On the spot, the tank is then emptied, and both the contaminated diesel and the urea leave as one.

Residue from AdBlue will not wash away by itself, and so the whole system gets a careful flush, which counts far more here than with petrol.

A test of your car comes last, after fresh diesel goes in and your filter gets flushed or, if needed, replaced.

Roughly half an hour once we arrive is usual for most jobs where the engine has not run.

The pumps are explosion-proof, fine on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

Finally, the fuel system is primed with fresh diesel.

Then we fire it up and you head off, whether from a parking space by Ystrad Rhondda or a drive in Gelli.

We check it runs correctly on clean diesel before we go.

No garage is needed at any stage, with the entire job done then and there.

At the end, there is the paperwork for the insurer: a VAT invoice and a written report from the engineer.

## Gelli and Rhondda Cynon Taf: AdBlue drains across the area

Over the CF postcode area, the vans taking AdBlue call-outs in Gelli reach much of Rhondda Cynon Taf too, Rhondda, Ton Pentre and Pentre included.

Close to a boundary, or anywhere awkward to explain? Asking is better than assuming, and so ring.

Anywhere your vehicle sits — your drive at home, a side street, a parking area, a forecourt — our technicians empty it on the spot, with no need to bring it to us; that suits Gelli, a residential suburb, well.

## Gelli: what AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to fix

No single figure could be fair, because every job is different.

Three things shift the cost: whether the motor has run and for how long, how much AdBlue got in, and where the car is. That last one turns on whether a van can get to it safely, and an open driveway is easier than a tight space behind Roy Paul.

Ahead of any quote, not afterwards, each enquiry from Gelli opens with the same three questions: the liquid, the quantity, and if it ran.

Those replies turn a range into a straight quote.

Quoted by phone before the van sets out, it is paid for that day — card or phone, nothing in advance.

Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it's worth checking yours whilst we're on the way.

## Gelli: still alongside your car?

Then the most helpful thing you can do is nothing to the vehicle.

Keys out; motor and ignition off.

Ring 0333 366 0103 and tell us it's AdBlue, about how much, and if it has run. Petrol in Diesel takes it from there, around Gelli or anywhere around Rhondda Cynon Taf.
