# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Georgetown? Don't Start It

If AdBlue has gone into your diesel tank, keep the engine off then keep your ignition off.

In plain terms, AdBlue is just urea in water.

Being water-based, it won't burn and never combines with diesel; damage just starts once the pump starts pulling it.

A drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is in Georgetown, is generally what AdBlue in a diesel tank needs — if it's caught before your engine has been run.

First, call us on 0333 366 0103.

## Georgetown, AdBlue in your diesel tank: what to do right away

Do:

- So nobody can turn your ignition on, take the keys out.

- Hazards on, if moving traffic is anywhere near.

- So you can give us which fluid it was and roughly what quantity, keep the receipt or the empty bottle.

- Ring us from where you are. A postcode starting NP22 3, or the name of the nearest street, gets the van to you without a search.

Do not do these:

- Do not start the engine, even for a moment to move the car.

- Plenty of diesels power their fuel pump the instant the ignition comes on, and so leave the car off.

- No more fuel added. The AdBlue won't blend, so it is wasted.

- Leave it where it is instead of driving it anywhere, even a short way along Pretoria Terrace.

- Draining that tank on your own by the road is not one to try.

The staff working at any Georgetown filling station — the Gulf included — will usually lend a hand pushing it clear if you ask.

At home, the car remains just where it was left.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does

AdBlue is made for the exhaust, not your motor.

Its own tank holds it, and from there it's sprayed into your exhaust, where it cleans the gas.

Neither side suits the other: urea doesn't belong in an injection pump, and an injection pump cannot deal with urea.

Poured in with your diesel, it keeps separate instead of blending — entirely unlike fuel.

It's heavier than diesel, so it sinks and collects at the bottom of that tank, which is where the pickup draws fuel from.

When your pump runs, the AdBlue is first to be pulled through. Until then it waits underneath your diesel, which is how a vehicle topped up in Mountain Air last night and never started remains the simple one, provided nobody turns the key.

It does two kinds of damage from there.

As its water goes, the urea left behind crystallises, and the crystals block filters and settle in fine passages. And it's corrosive to some of the metals a fuel system is made from, so it keeps running on the parts it reaches for as long as it stays there.

If the AdBlue is in the lines, leaving it till morning around Georgetown leaves it worse. In your tank alone, waiting does nothing.

Then there is the water: it offers no protection to the parts that need it the most — the high-pressure pump and each injector.

## Why is AdBlue in a diesel regularly the bigger problem?

Top up a diesel with petrol in error over at the Tesco, and this issue is diluted fuel.

Blended into your diesel and left still, it is no threat at that stage; using your engine is the harm.

AdBlue in a diesel is a different matter: not thin fuel, yet no fuel at all.

It cannot simply be run through, since it doesn't burn.

Whether your car sits in Hilltop or the centre of Georgetown, firing it up "to see" does more harm in this case than almost any other slip, and the flush matters more. The reasons: it won't remain mixed, and so watering it down is impossible; and deposits and corrosion survive the following tankful.

The good news is the same as with petrol.

Clearing a tank is the easiest part on a fuel system, and without start-up, the AdBlue remains in it — anywhere across Blaenau Gwent the vehicle sits.

## Georgetown: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

No one means to do it. The AdBlue filler on many cars waits right next to your diesel filler, occasionally under the same flap, and the two caps can look alike in poor light.

A container bought while heading home and poured in at home, rather than at the filling station, is the typical story.

It tends to occur in a few familiar ways.

Rushing, outside the local primary school, after a warning lamp came on during the school run, a parent tops up the vehicle.

Someone pours the bottle in outside their house, just off Mafeking Terrace, as the day ends.

Or a driver unfamiliar with that flap tops up your car in dim light, parked in the car park outside The Olympia.

Hired cars, new vehicles, company vehicles, or the spare car in a family with both fuels: the least known vehicles get it most.

Same mistake, same first step — leave it switched off — wherever you are around Georgetown or the rest of Blaenau Gwent.

## Georgetown: started the motor with AdBlue in the diesel tank?

Then the tank is no longer where the AdBlue is.

Given any running time, it goes on to the injection pump and each injector, after passing through your filter and pipework.

Perhaps returning from Bedwellty House & Park, or midway across Georgetown, your engine might run lumpy, smoke, lose power, light up your dash or cut out.

When safe, stop and switch it off — with no turning it on again to see.

Each start pulls more of that through.

Georgetown lies under 25 miles from the M4; if you were on it, leave at the next junction and pull up safely rather than carrying on.

Hopping across Georgetown to the car park by Tredegar Medical Aid Society Heritage Centre is one thing; heading towards Newport, under 25 miles away, is something else, since each mile carries the AdBlue further in. So distance counts.

Let us know about how far it had come.

Wherever your car came to a stop is where all of it gets done, even with more to rinse out once your engine has been running.

Long-term damage is very unusual if it's caught quickly.

## Georgetown: how AdBlue is drained from a diesel

The car remains put, whether that is a street near Tredegar Museum, a driveway, a lay-by or a forecourt around Georgetown, and the van comes to it.

Three replies decide the job, so before anything else our technicians ask what was put in, roughly what quantity, plus if the motor has run.

Next, draining the tank on the spot takes out the contaminated diesel along with the AdBlue together.

A full flush counts much more after AdBlue than after petrol, because residue won't wash out by itself.

Next, the filter: cleaned, or replaced when it has to be. Then clean diesel, then a check of the vehicle.

Roughly half an hour once we arrive is typical for most jobs when your engine hasn't run.

The pumps are explosion-proof, safe on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night.

The last step is to prime the fuel system on new diesel.

Then our technicians start the engine and you head off, whether from a parking space at Ebbw Vale Town or a drive in Georgetown.

Before we leave, our technicians make sure it is running correctly with new diesel in.

As the job is done in its entirety where your car is, a garage never comes into it.

You get a VAT invoice and an engineer report after that, which is what insurers want.

If you are close to a boundary, or somewhere hard to describe, ring and ask rather than guessing.

No towing is needed. In Georgetown, a residential suburb, a van that comes to you works: the vehicle is drained on the spot, be it on a driveway, a residential street, a car park or a filling station.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank around Georgetown: the cost of fixing it

No flat price would be fair, since every job is different.

The price changes first with how long, if at all, your engine has been running, and next with the quantity of AdBlue that got in. After that it depends on where the car is and whether a technician can reach it safely, which is simpler on an open driveway than in a tight space behind Tredegar Library.

Before a quote, not afterwards, each call from Georgetown begins with the same three checks: the fuel, the amount, plus if it ran.

The answers turn a range into a straight price.

You hear that quote on the phone, before anybody sets off, and you pay on the day, by card or over the phone, with nothing upfront.

Misfuelling cover comes with plenty of insurance policies, so it is worth looking at yours before the van gets there.

## Georgetown: still next to the vehicle?

Not touching your car is, then, the best thing you can do.

Keys out; engine and ignition off.

Call 0333 366 0103 then tell us it is AdBlue, about how much, and whether it's run. Petrol in Diesel takes it from there, around Georgetown or anywhere in Blaenau Gwent.
