# Why It Occurs and How to Prevent It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Giddy Green

AdBlue already in your diesel tank? In that case put this page down a moment, leave your ignition and engine off, then ring 0333 366 0103.

Caught before your engine runs, it is usually a drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is in Giddy Green.

If you're reading before it has happened, the rest of this page is about why it happens and how to make sure it doesn't.

## AdBlue in a diesel vehicle: two tanks, two fillers

Plenty of modern diesels around East Knighton, like those in Giddy Green, run on two fluids; your motor takes only your diesel.

Its own tank keeps it, and from there it is sent to your exhaust, and there a spray cleans the fumes.

Each tank has its own filler.

Some motors keep the AdBlue filler in your boot or under the bonnet; a lot more have both side by side under one flap.

Diesel goes in at every forecourt call-out, again and again.

Rarely topped up, AdBlue normally comes out of a bottle, poured by someone who has to stop and think what cap it needs.

The slip lives in that gap.

## How does AdBlue in the diesel tank take place in Giddy Green?

Three things tend to line up, and carelessness is rarely one of them.

Haste comes from the warning. The vehicle tells you as AdBlue runs low, and a dry tank puts the vehicle into limp mode — so the top-up gets done quickly, before work on a driveway off The Poppies, or heading home in the car park at The Ship Inn.

The old car's cap is where the hand goes — but a hire car, a new vehicle or a company car keeps the fillers elsewhere. That is a second thing: a strange motor.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, and so nothing stops the tip after it has started.

The same few seconds settle it, in the middle of Giddy Green or out in Braytown.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

A few seconds is all these take — so run through them before you tip anything, on a drive in Coombe Keynes or a forecourt in Giddy Green.

- Colour and lettering: an AdBlue cap is frequently blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap usually doesn't. Trust the cap, not its position.

- On many motors, the size tells: AdBlue gets the smaller filler neck.

- Check inside the fuel flap: plenty of motors have a label there saying which fuel goes where.

- The handbook. If your filler isn't by your diesel cap, it is in the boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- Check with the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — when you pick up a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park at Wool.

## How to top up without AdBlue in the diesel tank

For the day the light appears — anywhere it is across Dorset — a routine to follow.

- Park and switch off. Not on a slope, not with the engine running, and not in a rush on the side of Toll Gate.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds silly and it does the trick.

- The diesel cap remains on. Where both sit under a flap, make sure it's closed before lifting the bottle.

- Pour slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it's full or when the bottle is empty.

- Before you start the vehicle, shut the cap and check a second time that your diesel cap never came off.

Find at step two or three that it has already gone into your diesel side? Then stop right there.

Never go on to stage five.

## Put AdBlue in the diesel tank in Giddy Green already?

Then the order of things is short. Do not start the engine.

Don't switch your ignition on; on many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

Topping up with diesel will not thin it: instead, AdBlue sinks to the bottom of that tank, just where the fuel is taken from.

Ask the staff to help push your car away from the pump if you're at a forecourt — the Murco, the another forecourt nearby or somewhere else.

Your own drive in Giddy Green is the place it should stay.

When the motor has been run by now, pull over somewhere safe then switch the car off.

Giddy Green lies under 50 miles from the M27; on it, take the next exit.

About how far did it go? Hopping across Giddy Green is less a job than a trip of under 50 miles to Salisbury, so tell us.

## Giddy Green: what occurs when we get there

Outside St Mary & St Joseph's Catholic Primary School, near Frome Dale Bed & Breakfast or on your own driveway: wherever the car has stopped, we come to it.

Which liquid was put in, the amount, and if it ran: our technicians ask because those replies set the work and quote.

During the phone call itself, you are told the quote — before anything else.

Then that tank is emptied and your system rinsed thoroughly.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it doesn't wash out on its own — which is why the flush matters more with AdBlue than with petrol.

Once the filter has been cleaned — or replaced, if required — fresh diesel goes in, and then the car is tested.

Then we start it and check it runs correctly before leaving.

Unrun cars usually need a half-hour visit after the moment we arrive. The kit is fine on a live filling station, and quiet enough for a driveway late at night.

Payment is on the day, not upfront, and you are given the paperwork an insurer wants: an engineer's report and a VAT invoice.

Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it is worth checking yours whilst we are on the way.
