# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Giffnock? Don't Start It

With AdBlue in your diesel tank, your ignition remains off and so does your engine.

AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.

The trouble starts once it is pulled through the pump — it will not ignite, and it will not combine with diesel.

Caught before the motor has run, AdBlue in a diesel tank is usually a drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is in Giffnock.

Call 0333 366 0103 before you do anything else.

## Giffnock, AdBlue in the diesel tank: what to do right away

Do:

- Remove the keys, which stops someone turning the electrics on.

- Hazards on, if moving traffic is anywhere near.

- So you can give us which liquid it was and about how much, save your receipt or the empty bottle.

- Give us a postcode starting G46 6, or whichever street lies closest, and our van reaches you directly — so ring from wherever you are.

Don't:

- Shifting the car even a short way is no reason to fire up the engine.

- Turning the key to ignition alone starts your pump going on many diesels. Skip it.

- Adding more diesel doesn't help: AdBlue settles out instead of blending.

- Any driving at all is best avoided, including a short stretch up Braidholm Road.

- By the road, do not attempt emptying it yourself.

The staff working at any Giffnock filling station — the Morrisons among them — will usually help pushing it aside if you ask.

On that drive, the vehicle remains exactly where it is.

## What does AdBlue do in a diesel tank?

The engine is not what AdBlue is made for; the exhaust is.

Its own reservoir keeps it, and from there it's sprayed into the exhaust, where it treats the gas.

A fuel pump isn't designed to take it, and AdBlue was never intended to go through one.

Tipped in with your diesel, it stays separate rather than mixing — quite unlike fuel.

Heavier than diesel, it drops and collects underneath it — the same place the pickup sucks from.

Once your pump runs, the AdBlue is top of the list to be pulled through. Until then it sits underneath your diesel, which is why a vehicle topped up in Newlands last night and never started remains the simple one, as long as no one turns your key.

Two kinds of damage come from there.

What is left when the water goes is urea, which forms crystals: they settle in narrow passages and block filters. On top of that, it attacks some metals in a fuel system, and keeps going till it's cleared out.

By daybreak, a car parked in Giffnock with AdBlue in its lines gets worse; if it is just in the tank, it doesn't.

Diesel lubricates the high-pressure pump and every injector as it flows; water gives no lubrication, which is a second kind of damage.

## Why is AdBlue in a diesel regularly the bigger issue?

Petrol put into a diesel on BP's forecourt leaves the fuel watery — that's the main issue.

Damage only comes from running on it. Mixed into the diesel and sitting inside that tank, it causes nothing.

With AdBlue in a diesel, the fluid itself is simply the wrong one.

Not burning, it can't just be run through.

It does not stay mixed, so it can't be diluted. And crystals and corrosion don't wash out with the next tank of fuel. That's why the flush counts more with AdBlue than with petrol, and why starting the motor "to see" costs more here than almost anywhere else, whether the vehicle is in Mansewood or the middle of Giffnock.

The same good news applies as with petrol.

Clearing a tank is the easiest part on a fuel system, and without running, the AdBlue remains in there — anywhere around East Renfrewshire the vehicle has stopped.

## How does AdBlue end up in a diesel tank in Giffnock?

Many motors put the AdBlue cap beside the diesel cap, now and then under a single flap, and after dark the two can appear the same. Nobody means it.

Most of the time it occurs with a bottle bought on the way home and poured in on the driveway, not at the pump.

Mostly, it happens in one of a couple of familiar ways.

Hurrying, outside the local primary school, after a warning light flashed on during the school run, someone refills the vehicle.

A driver pours the bottle in outside their house, just off Braidbar Road, as the day ends.

Else, after dark by Bank Pub, the vehicle is topped up by a driver using that flap the first time.

Hired motors, new cars, company vehicles, or the second vehicle in a home with one of each: the least known cars get it the most.

Leave it off: that is the first step to an identical mistake, anywhere in Giffnock or the remainder of East Renfrewshire you happen to be.

## Already started the engine with AdBlue in your diesel tank around Giffnock?

Then the tank is no longer where the AdBlue is.

It's been sucked through your filter and the lines, and if your engine ran for any time, it has got to the high-pressure fuel pump and the injectors.

Rough running, smoke from the exhaust, lost power, dashboard warnings or cutting out: any might show up, perhaps midway across Giffnock or returning from Woodfarm Playing Fields.

No starting it again to test: stop when safe, then turn it off.

Each start pulls more of that through.

If you were on the M77, under 3 miles from Giffnock, come off at the next exit and stop somewhere safe rather than pressing on.

Each mile pushes the AdBlue further into your system. That's why crossing Giffnock to park near Giffnock URC and a drive of under 5 miles towards Glasgow are very distinct jobs.

About how far it had come is worth telling us.

There is more to clean out once the motor has been started, and we do all of it where your car has stopped.

When it's noticed soon, long-term damage is very rare.

## Emptying AdBlue in a diesel in Giffnock: what it takes

The vehicle remains where it is, whether that's a road near Giffnock Public Library, a drive, a layby or a forecourt in Giffnock, and the van travels to it.

Before anything else our engineers ask what was put in, roughly how much, and whether the engine has run, because those replies decide this work.

The contaminated diesel and the urea leave as one after the tank is drained, right there.

What remains from AdBlue will not flush out by itself, so the fuel system gets a careful flush, which counts much more here than for petrol.

Testing the vehicle follows last, once fresh diesel is added and the filter is cleaned or, if needed, replaced.

Roughly half an hour once we arrive is typical for most jobs where the engine has not run.

The pumping gear is explosion-proof, and so a live filling station is no issue, and it's hushed enough for a residential street late at night.

Lastly, the system is primed with fresh diesel.

Whether it is a parking space by the nearest station or a drive around Giffnock, that is where our technicians fire it up and you drive off.

It is checked on fresh diesel to be sure it runs smoothly before our technicians leave.

No garage is needed at any point, with the whole job done on the spot.

Insurers want a VAT invoice and an engineer report, and both come afterwards.

## What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right around Giffnock

Because each jobs vary, a single figure wouldn't be honest.

What changes the cost is, firstly, whether your engine has been running and for how long; then how much AdBlue was put in; and finally where the car is and whether a technician can get to it safely, which is easier on an open driveway than in a tight space behind Giffnock North Amateur Athletic Club.

Which fluid got in, what quantity, and if the engine ran: each Giffnock call opens by asking precisely those, before a figure, not afterwards.

Once they are known, a range turns into one firm figure.

The quote is quoted on the call, before a van leaves; settling up comes on the day, by card or over the phone, with nothing upfront.

Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it's worth checking yours whilst we're on the way.
