# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Gigg? Don't Start It

With AdBlue in your diesel tank, your ignition remains off and so does your engine.

AdBlue is urea mixed in water.

The harm begins once it is pulled through the lines — it won't ignite, and it will not blend with diesel.

A drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is around Gigg, is generally what AdBlue in a diesel tank needs — if it's caught before the engine has been run.

First, ring us on 0333 366 0103.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank around Gigg: the first few minutes

To do:

- Pocket the keys, and that prevents someone switching the electrics on.

- Put the hazards on if you're anywhere near moving traffic.

- So you can tell us which fluid it was and about how much, keep the receipt or the empty bottle.

- Call us from where you are. A postcode starting BL9 9, or the name of the closest street, gets the van to you without a search.

Not to do:

- No starting the engine — not briefly, not to shift the car.

- The ignition stays off: on lots of diesels, turning it on is enough to start your pump.

- Adding more diesel does not help: AdBlue settles out rather than blending.

- Even a short way down Silverdale Close is too far to drive it.

- Emptying the tank yourself by the road isn't worth trying.

On a forecourt around Gigg, whether it is the Asda or another one, ask the attendants to help you roll your car away from the petrol pump.

If you're on your own drive, leave it precisely where it is.

## What AdBlue does in a diesel tank

Not the engine but the exhaust is where AdBlue belongs.

From a dedicated tank it is fed straight to the exhaust, cleaning what your motor lets out.

Not one side suits the other: urea doesn't belong in a pump, and an injection pump cannot take urea.

Tipped in with your diesel, it stays apart instead of blending — quite unlike fuel.

The intake sucks fuel from the deepest part of your tank, and that's exactly where AdBlue ends up: as it is denser than diesel, it sinks.

Once the pump runs, the AdBlue is first to go through. Until then it sits underneath your diesel, which is how a car topped up in Hollins yesterday and never switched on stays the straightforward case, as long as nobody turns your key.

Two kinds of damage follow from there.

As its water goes, the urea left behind crystallises, and the crystals block filters and settle in fine passages. And it's corrosive to some of the metals a fuel system is made from, so it keeps working on the parts it hits for as long as it stays there.

A motor left sitting in Gigg with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue only in its tank is not.

Water lubricates nothing. The high-pressure pump and each injector depend on diesel flowing past them, and so the water part harms them by itself.

## Why is AdBlue in a diesel commonly the bigger problem?

An issue of thin fuel is what you end up with from fuelling a diesel with petrol at the EG On the Move.

No damage comes while it sits put, blended into your diesel — only once your motor works on it.

The issue with AdBlue in a diesel is a completely wrong substance.

It does not burn, so it can't simply be run through.

Nor can it be watered down, because it separates back out — and the following fill won't clear away crystals or corrosion. So the flush counts more here, and trying the engine "to see", in the heart of Gigg or out in Heap Bridge, does more harm than nearly any other error.

With AdBlue, the good news is no separate from petrol.

Wherever in Greater Manchester the car has come to rest, an unrun motor leaves the AdBlue yet in the tank: the simplest part of any fuel system to empty.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank around Gigg: how it ends up there

Plenty of cars place the AdBlue filler beside the diesel cap, occasionally behind one flap, and after dark the two can look identical. Nobody means it.

Usually it is never the filling station: a driver buys a container heading home and tips it in at home.

It tends to happen in a couple of familiar ways.

Rushing, outside St Luke's CofE Primary School, after a warning lamp came on during the school run, a parent tops up the car.

In the evening, a container is tipped in on a drive close to Astbury Close.

Or someone unfamiliar with that flap tops up your car in dim light, parked in the car park by The Paper Mill.

It happens most in the motors drivers know least: a hire car, a new vehicle, a company car, or the second vehicle of a household with one diesel and one petrol.

Leave it switched off: that is the first step to the same slip, anywhere around Gigg or the rest of Greater Manchester you are.

## Already started the engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank in Gigg?

If so, the AdBlue is no longer in that tank.

It has been drawn through the filter and your lines, and if the motor ran for any time, it has got to the high-pressure pump and the fuel injectors.

Rough running, smoke from the exhaust, dropping power, dashboard warnings or stalling: each might appear, perhaps midway across Gigg or returning from Springs Community Green.

Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and do not restart it to check.

More of that is pulled through with each start.

Gigg lies under a mile from the M66; if you were on it, exit by the first junction and pull up safely rather than driving on.

How far it went matters. A couple of hundred yards across Gigg to the car park by Bury Athletic Club is a very different job from a run towards Salford, under 10 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into the fuel system with each mile.

Tell us about how far it had come.

There's more to clean out once the engine has been started, and we do all of it where your car has come to a stop.

Very seldom does it leave lasting damage when it's spotted quickly.

## Draining AdBlue in a diesel in Gigg: what it takes

Our engineers come to the car, wherever it has stopped in Gigg: a side street near Gigg Lane, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt.

Before anything else our engineers ask what was put in, roughly how much, and if the engine has run, since those answers determine the work.

Right there, the tank is then drained, and all of the polluted diesel and the urea come out at once.

A full flush counts much more after AdBlue than with petrol, since what remains will not wash out on its own.

Next, the filter: cleaned, or changed when it has to be. After that fresh diesel, then a test of your car.

Not run? In that case count on roughly half an hour on site for most jobs.

Our pumping gear is explosion-proof, so a busy forecourt is no issue, and it's quiet enough for a residential street late at night.

The final step is to bleed the fuel system on fresh diesel.

Firing it up comes next, and then you set off from where your car is parked, outside Castleton or on a driveway in Gigg.

It is checked on new diesel to make sure it runs properly before our technicians head off.

The entire job is done where the vehicle is, so it never needs to be taken to a garage.

The insurer will want an engineer's report and the VAT invoice — both yours once this job is done.

Near a boundary, or somewhere tricky to pin down? Asking is better than guessing, and so phone.

Anywhere your vehicle sits — your driveway at home, a side street, a parking area, a forecourt — we empty it there, and there's no need to take it to us; which suits Gigg, a residential suburb, well.

## What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right around Gigg

There's no fair single quote, since the jobs aren't the same.

Whether your engine has run, and for how long, comes first in what shifts the cost. How much AdBlue went in comes next, and then the location of the vehicle, because an open driveway is simpler for a technician to get to safely than a tight space behind Goshen Sports Centre.

That is why each call from Gigg starts with the same three questions, asked before giving a figure, not after: what got in, how much, and whether it has run.

Given those replies, a range shrinks to a single fixed number.

Our quote is quoted during the call, before anyone sets off; settling up comes on the day, by card or by phone, and nothing upfront.

As our engineer is on the way, check your insurance: plenty cover misfuelling.

## Next to the car in Gigg, still?

Then, the best thing to do with the car is to not touch it.

Ignition off, engine off, keys out.

Call 0333 366 0103 and tell us it is AdBlue, roughly how much, and whether it has run. Petrol in Diesel takes it from there, around Gigg or anywhere around Greater Manchester.
