# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Gilfach? Don't Start It

Engine off, ignition off: that's where you start if AdBlue has gone into your diesel tank.

Urea dissolved in water is all AdBlue is.

It does not burn, it does not mix with diesel, and the damage it does starts when the fuel system draws it in.

A drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is around Gilfach, is usually all AdBlue in a diesel tank takes — if it is caught before the motor has been run.

Before you do anything else, phone 0333 366 0103.

## What to do right now, Gilfach: AdBlue in your diesel tank

Things to do:

- So nobody can turn your ignition on, take the keys away.

- Hazards on, if moving traffic is at all near.

- Which fluid, and roughly how much volume? Hang on to the bottle or the till receipt, and we will know.

- The van finds you quickest with a postcode starting CF81 8, or just the name of a street close by, and so call from the spot.

Never:

- No starting your motor — not briefly, not to shift your vehicle.

- Your ignition stays off: on many diesels, turning it on is enough to run your pump.

- Don't top up with diesel to dilute it. AdBlue doesn't mix in diesel; it separates out.

- Keep the car where it is instead of driving it anywhere, even a short distance up Llewelyn Street.

- Don't try to drain the vehicle yourself by the roadside.

The staff working at any Gilfach forecourt — the Morrisons among them — will usually lend a hand pushing it clear if you ask.

At home, the car stays just where it was left.

## What AdBlue does in a diesel tank

The engine isn't what AdBlue is made for; the exhaust is.

From a separate reservoir it is fed directly to the exhaust, treating what your engine emits.

A fuel pump isn't made to cope with it, and AdBlue was never supposed to travel through one.

Fuel blends; AdBlue, after tipped in, won't. Its behaviour is not at all like diesel's.

It sinks, because it is denser than diesel, and pools down where the intake draws its fuel from.

The first thing the fuel system pulls through, after it runs, is the AdBlue. So a vehicle that had AdBlue poured in on a drive in Pen-pedair-heol last night, and hasn't been started since, is still the simple case: the AdBlue is lying at the bottom of your tank, and nothing has pulled it in.

From there it causes two kinds of harm.

It attacks some metals found in fuel components, working on any part it reaches until it is cleared completely. And when the water goes, the urea forms crystals that clog filters and lodge in tiny channels.

By daybreak, a car sitting around Gilfach with AdBlue through its pipework grows worse; where it is just in that tank, it doesn't.

Then there's the water: it brings no lubrication to the parts that rely on it most — the injection pump and every injector.

## Why AdBlue in a diesel is commonly more serious than petrol

A fault of thinned fuel is what you end up with after filling a diesel with petrol at the another forecourt nearby.

It mixes with your diesel, and while it is inside your tank it causes no harm; the harm comes from running the motor on it.

AdBlue in a diesel is another problem: not thin fuel, yet no fuel at all.

Since it doesn't burn, running it through is not an option.

Nor can it be thinned, because it splits back out — and the following fill won't clear away deposits or corrosion. So the flush matters for more with AdBlue, and turning the key "to see", in the heart of Gilfach or out in Pengam, does more harm than nearly any other slip.

The good news is the same as with petrol.

Emptying a tank is the easiest job on any fuel system, and without start-up, the AdBlue stays in there — anywhere across Caerphilly your car sits.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank around Gilfach: how it ends up there

Nobody means to do it. The AdBlue filler on many vehicles rests right next to your diesel filler, sometimes under the same flap, and the two caps can look alike in poor light.

Usually it's never the forecourt: someone buys a bottle heading home and pours it in at home.

It tends to happen in a few familiar ways.

The top-up gets hurried outside the local primary school, after your dash flashed with a warning as the children were dropped in.

Close to Commercial Street, a driver pours a container in on the drive after work.

Or a driver new to that flap refills the vehicle in dim light, parked in the car park outside Bargoed Rugby Club.

It happens most in the cars people know least: a hire car, a new motor, a company car, or the second car of a household with one diesel and one petrol.

Same slip, same first step — leave it off — anywhere you are around Gilfach or the rest of Caerphilly.

## Gilfach: started the motor with AdBlue in your diesel tank?

The AdBlue has left your tank, then.

It has been drawn through the filter and the fuel lines, and if your engine ran for any time, it has got to the high-pressure fuel pump and the injectors.

You may notice the motor running unevenly, smoking, losing power, showing warning lights or cutting out, maybe on the way back from Parc Coetir Bargod or halfway across Gilfach.

Stop when safe. Switch off. Leave the car off rather than restarting it to check.

With each start, more of that is pulled through.

Leave the M4, under 10 miles from Gilfach, at the next junction and park safely, rather than driving on.

How far it went counts. A few hundred yards across Gilfach to the car park by Ainon Baptist Church is a very different job from a run towards Newport, under 15 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into your system with every mile.

About how far it had come is worth telling us.

There is more to flush once your engine has run, and we do all of it where your car has stopped.

Lasting damage is very unusual when it is noticed early.

## Gilfach: how AdBlue is drained from a diesel

The car remains where it is, whether that is a road near The Church of St Margaret, Gilfach, a drive, a layby or a filling station in Gilfach, and the van travels to it.

What got in, roughly how much, plus whether the motor has turned over: we check before all else, because those decide the work.

Then the tank is cleared where your car sits, so the contaminated fuel and the AdBlue come out together.

A full flush counts much more with AdBlue than with petrol, since residue won't wash away by itself.

Fresh diesel goes in after your filter is cleaned — or swapped, when it needs to be — and after that your vehicle is tested.

The majority of these jobs are a half-hour job once our technicians get there, if your engine hasn't run.

Quiet enough for use outside a house at night, and fine on a busy forecourt, the pumps are explosion-proof.

The last step is to prime your system on clean diesel.

Starting the engine comes next, and then you head off from where your car is parked, at Gilfach Fargoed or on a driveway in Gilfach.

Our engineers make sure it runs smoothly on new diesel before leaving.

No garage is required at any stage, with the whole job done then and there.

Your insurer will want an engineer's report and your VAT invoice — each handed over afterwards.

## About Gilfach, for a moment

Gilfach is a suburban area in Caerphilly, situated on the banks of a river at an elevation of around 180 metres. Gilfach lies near the communities of Glan-y-nant, Cefn Fforest, and Bargod, and is approximately 11.7 miles from Newport. Gilfach has a population of around 2844 people, predominantly living in terraced housing. Gilfach is also relatively close to major cities, with London being around 133.5 miles away.

## AdBlue drains across Caerphilly, Gilfach included

Our teams that answer AdBlue call-outs around Gilfach also cover the locations round it, Glan-y-nant, Cefn Fforest and Bargod among them, and most of Caerphilly beyond, across the CF postcode area.

If you are close to a boundary, or somewhere hard to explain, ring and ask rather than assuming.

Gilfach is a residential suburb, and a call-out drain suits it: whether your car is on a home drive, a residential street, a car park or a forecourt, our engineers drain it where it sits, and so it never needs to be shifted to us.

## Gilfach: what AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to fix

Because the callouts vary, a single figure would not be fair.

Three things change the price: whether your engine has been running and for how long, how much AdBlue was put in, and where the car is. That last one rests on whether a van can get to it safely, and an open drive is easier than a tight spot behind Spirit of the Stream.

That's why each call from Gilfach starts with the same three questions, asked before giving a figure, not after: what was put in, how much, and whether it's run.

Given them, the range shrinks to one firm figure.

Before anyone heads out, you hear the price on the phone. Then payment is on the day, by card or over the phone, with nothing in advance.

As the van is on the way, check your insurance: plenty cover misfuelling.
