# AdBlue in the Diesel Tank in Gilfoot? Keep It Switched Off

AdBlue in your diesel tank? Then leave your engine off — and your ignition as well.

Urea dissolved in water is what AdBlue is.

It does not burn, it does not mix with diesel, and the harm it does starts when your fuel system draws it in.

If the motor hasn't run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is normally emptied and thoroughly flushed where the car stands in Gilfoot.

Before you do anything else, phone 0333 366 0103.

## Those opening minutes: AdBlue in your diesel tank around Gilfoot

Do:

- So nobody can turn the ignition on, pull your keys out.

- Hazards on, if moving traffic is at all close.

- The empty bottle or your receipt shows us the product and the amount, so do not bin it away.

- Give us a postcode starting KA16 9, or whatever street lies closest, and the van reaches you straight — so call from wherever you stand.

Do not do these:

- Shifting the car just a few yards is no reason to fire up the engine.

- Many diesels power their pump the moment your ignition goes on, and so leave the car off.

- Adding more diesel does not work: AdBlue settles out instead of thinning.

- Any driving at all is best avoided, even a short stretch along Loudoun Road.

- Beside the road, don't attempt emptying it yourself.

The attendants on duty at any Gilfoot filling station — the the nearest petrol station among them — will normally lend a hand pushing it clear if you ask.

On the drive, the car remains exactly where it was left.

## What AdBlue does in a diesel tank

Made for the exhaust, AdBlue has no place in your engine.

From a separate reservoir it is fed directly to the exhaust, treating what your motor lets out.

Neither side suits the other: urea does not belong in an injection pump, and an injection pump can't take urea.

Poured in with your diesel, it stays apart instead of blending — entirely unlike fuel.

Heavier than diesel, it sinks and collects underneath it — the very spot the intake sucks from.

A car topped up on a drive in Sornhill overnight and left unstarted is the straightforward one. Nothing has pulled the AdBlue up so far — but once the motor turns, that's what is pulled first, straight from the bottom of that tank.

From there it causes two kinds of damage.

As its water goes, the urea left behind crystallises, and the crystals block filters and settle in fine passages. And it is corrosive to some of the metals a fuel system is made from, so it keeps working on the components it hits for as long as it stays there.

Lines holding AdBlue mean damage overnight for a vehicle sitting in Gilfoot. Only inside the tank, it stays stable.

And there is the water: it brings no lubrication to the components that rely on it the most — the injection pump and every injector.

## Petrol or AdBlue in a diesel: why AdBlue is frequently worse

Petrol put into a diesel on another forecourt nearby's forecourt leaves the fuel thin — that is the main problem.

Mixed into your diesel and left unused, it's harmless for now; using the engine is the harm.

The issue with AdBlue in a diesel is a completely unsuitable liquid.

Because it doesn't burn, running it through isn't an option.

Nor can it be thinned, since it separates again — and the next tankful will not rinse away crystals or corrosion. So the flush counts for more here, and trying the engine "to see", in the centre of Gilfoot or out in Darvel, does more harm than nearly any other error.

The good news is the same as with petrol.

Clearing a tank is the simplest job on a fuel system, and with no running, the AdBlue remains in there — wherever in East Ayrshire the car has stopped.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank around Gilfoot: how it ends up there

It is not deliberate. Plenty of vehicles keep the AdBlue cap alongside the diesel inlet, now and then behind one flap, and mixing them up is easy in poor light.

A bottle picked up when driving home and tipped in outside the house, rather than at the filling station, is the typical route.

The ways it takes place are few and familiar.

Hurrying, outside the local primary school, after a warning light flashed on during the school run, someone tops up your car.

Near Loudoun Road West, a driver pours a bottle in at home in the evening.

Or a driver unfamiliar with that flap refills the vehicle in dim light, parked in the car park outside the pub in the village.

The least familiar vehicles get it most — rentals, new ones, company cars, and the spare vehicle in a family with both fuels.

Keep it off: that is the first response to the same slip, anywhere around Gilfoot or the rest of East Ayrshire you happen to be.

## Started the engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank around Gilfoot?

The AdBlue has left the tank, then.

Given any running, it goes on to the high-pressure pump and each injector, after passing via the fuel filter and pipework.

You may see the engine running unevenly, smoking, losing power, showing warning lights or cutting out, possibly on the way back from Hag Plantation or halfway across Gilfoot.

Stop when it is safe. Turn off. Keep the car off instead of restarting it to check.

Every start pulls more of that through.

Leave the M77, under 10 miles from Gilfoot, at the next junction and stop safely, rather than driving on.

Every mile pushes the AdBlue deeper in. That is why crossing Gilfoot to park beside Old Loudoun Castle, Motte and a drive of under 25 miles for Glasgow are very separate jobs.

Approximately how far had it come? Tell us.

Our technicians do all of the cleaning where the vehicle has come to a stop, and once the engine has run there is more of it.

When it's noticed early, lasting damage is very rare.

## What clearing AdBlue from a diesel involves around Gilfoot

The vehicle stays where it is, whether that's a street beside Newmilns Tower, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt around Gilfoot, and our van travels to it.

The work rests on three answers, and our technicians get before all else — what was put in, the amount, and whether your engine has run.

Then the tank is cleared where the vehicle sits, so the polluted fuel and the AdBlue come out together.

The fuel system is flushed thoroughly, which counts more with AdBlue than with petrol, because what it leaves behind does not rinse out on its own.

Testing your car follows at the end, once fresh diesel is added and the fuel filter is cleaned or, if needed, replaced.

Roughly half an hour once we arrive is usual for most jobs when the motor hasn't run.

The pumps are explosion-proof, safe on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night.

Priming the fuel system with fresh diesel comes last.

Then our engineers fire it up and you set off, whether from a parking space outside Kilmarnock or a driveway in Gilfoot.

The test before we go is that it runs smoothly on fresh diesel.

The whole job is done where your car is, so it never has to be taken to a workshop.

Insurers want a VAT invoice and an engineer report, and both come at the end.

No towing is needed. In Gilfoot, a residential suburb, a van that comes to you fits: the vehicle is emptied on the spot, whether on a driveway, a side street, a car park or a filling station.

## What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right in Gilfoot

Because the jobs differ, a single figure wouldn't be fair.

The cost shifts first with how long, if at all, the engine has been running, and next with the quantity of AdBlue that was put in. After that it rests on where the car is and whether our van can reach it safely, which is easier on an open driveway than in a tight gap behind Newmilns Library.

Which fluid went in, how much, plus if it ran: each Gilfoot enquiry opens with exactly those, ahead of any figure, not after.

Those answers shrink a range down to one number.

Before anyone sets off, you hear the price by phone. Then payment is on the day, by card or by phone, with nothing upfront.

Look at your insurance whilst we're on the way: many carry misfuelling cover.

## Next to the car in Gilfoot, still?

Then, the best thing to do with your vehicle is to leave it.

Keys out, motor off, ignition off.

Say it was AdBlue, about what quantity, and whether it ran, on 0333 366 0103. After that Petrol in Diesel handles it, in Gilfoot or anywhere in East Ayrshire.
