# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Glan-y-don: Why It Happens and How to Stop It

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave the motor and the ignition off then call 0333 366 0103.

Usually, when the engine hasn't turned, it is emptied and thoroughly cleaned where the vehicle sits around Glan-y-don.

If you are reading before it has happened, the rest of this page is about why it occurs and how to make sure it doesn't.

## Why does AdBlue in a diesel motor need its own filler?

Diesel feeds your motor — but many current diesels driven about Glan-y-don and Rhewl-Mostyn hold a second fluid as well.

AdBlue's own tank keeps it, and from there it is sent to the exhaust, where a spray cleans the gas.

There's a filler on every tank.

Under one flap, side by side: that is the arrangement on a lot of cars. On others, AdBlue's filler is beneath the bonnet or in your boot instead.

The diesel side is topped up at the petrol pump all the time.

The AdBlue side is filled far less commonly, normally from a bottle, and usually by someone who has to stop and think where it goes.

Mistakes happen in the gap between them.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank around Glan-y-don: how it occurs

Carelessness seldom causes it. Instead is three things lining up together.

On a drive off A548 before work, or in the car park outside The Old Tavern Inn heading home: that is where the rushed top-up takes place. What is the reason for the rush? As AdBlue runs low the car warns you, and if it is empty, limp mode follows.

Then the car is new. A hire car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers where your last one did not, and your hand gets to for the cap it would have used on the old one.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, and so nothing stops the pour after it has started.

The same few seconds decide it, in the middle of Glan-y-don or out in Maes Pennant.

## The AdBlue filler and the diesel filler: telling them apart

A couple of seconds is all these take — so check them before you pour anything, on a drive in Golch or a forecourt around Glan-y-don.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is commonly blue, or marked "AdBlue". Your diesel cap usually is not. Read it rather than going by position.

- Look at the size: the smaller neck is, on plenty of vehicles, the AdBlue one.

- A label inside your fuel flap often shows which fuel goes where, on many vehicles. Check for it.

- The handbook shows where it lives if the filler isn't next to your diesel cap: the boot, or under the bonnet.

- Ask the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — if you pick up a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park outside West Kirby.

## Keeping AdBlue out of the diesel tank when you top up

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever across Flintshire that is.

- Switch off after you park — level ground, engine off, and never in a rush beside Garden Row on the verge.

- Daft as it sounds, saying "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap works — once you've found your filler and read it.

- If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — and leave the car on.

- Finish when that tank is topped up or the bottle is empty; until then, pour gently through the built-in spout.

- Shut the cap, and look once more — confirm the diesel filler remained closed the whole time. Only then, start your car.

Find at stage two or three that it has already gone into the diesel side? So stop just there.

Don't go on to stage five.

## Glan-y-don: already put AdBlue in the diesel tank?

Then the order of things is short. Do not start your motor.

The fuel pump runs on many diesels the moment your ignition is switched on — so keep it off.

Thinning it with extra diesel fails, because AdBlue sinks to the bottom instead of blending — and that's where the fuel is pulled from.

Ask the staff to help push the car clear of the pump if you are on a forecourt — the Texaco, the Shell or anywhere else.

At home in Glan-y-don? So your car remains put.

Stop as soon as it is safe then switch off, if your motor has already run.

On the Moreton Spur, under 10 miles from Glan-y-don, that means the next junction.

A short hop across Glan-y-don is a smaller job than a run towards St Asaph, under 10 miles away, and so tell us roughly how far it went.

## Our arrival in Glan-y-don, and what occurs next

Our van reaches your car wherever it stopped — your own driveway, beside TSS Duke of Lancaster, or outside the local primary school.

Both the work and the price depend on three replies — which liquid, what amount, and whether it's run — so our technicians ask.

No one sets off before you've had the price by phone.

Draining that tank comes next, followed by a full flush of the fuel system.

Unlike petrol, AdBlue leaves crystals and eats at certain fuel-system metals, and none of that clears out by itself. Hence it counts more.

The filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and the car is tested.

Before leaving, we start the engine and confirm that it's running smoothly.

Most jobs are finished in about half an hour once our technicians get there, provided your motor has not run — and the pumps we use are fine on a busy forecourt and quiet at night beside a house.

Payment is on the day, not upfront, and you receive the documents an insurer asks for: an engineer report and a VAT invoice.

Wrong-fuel cover is included in plenty of insurance policies — and so make use of the wait to check yours.
