# Glascote Heath: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Prevent It?

Pause reading a minute when your diesel tank already has AdBlue in it: ignition off, motor off, and call 0333 366 0103.

Caught before your engine runs, it's usually a drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is in Glascote Heath.

The rest of this page explains why it takes place and how to ensure it does not — useful if you're reading before it has happened.

## Why does AdBlue in a diesel motor need its own filler?

No single liquid but two: that's what many newer diesels around Glascote Heath and Glascote run, with diesel for the motor.

AdBlue's own tank keeps it, and from there it goes to your exhaust, and there spraying treats the fumes.

Each tank has its own filler.

Other vehicles keep the AdBlue filler in the boot or under the bonnet; a lot more have both together behind one flap.

At the pump, your diesel side gets filled constantly.

Far less regularly, the AdBlue side gets filled — mostly from a bottle, by someone working out where it goes.

That gap is where the error lives.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank in Glascote Heath: how it takes place

Carelessness seldom causes it. Instead is three things lining up at once.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low your car tells you, and if it runs out altogether, your vehicle drops into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a drive off Engine Lane before work, or in the car park outside St George on the way home.

The old car's cap is where the hand reaches — but a rental car, a new vehicle or a company car keeps the fillers somewhere else. That's the second factor: a new motor.

A spouted bottle meets no obstacle at a diesel filler any more than at an AdBlue one. And so the pour, after started, carries on.

Whether it occurs in Amington or the middle of Glascote Heath, it's the same few seconds.

## The AdBlue filler and the diesel filler: telling them apart

Whether a Glascote Heath forecourt or a drive out in Wilnecote, spend a few seconds on these before anything is poured in.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is often blue, or marked "AdBlue". The diesel cap usually is not. Read it instead of going by position.

- The size. On plenty of motors the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- A label inside your fuel flap often says which fuel goes where, on many cars. Check for it.

- In your boot or under the bonnet: that's where the filler sits if it's not by the diesel cap, and the handbook says which.

- The previous driver knows. Ask when you pick up a rental or company car — from Wilnecote's car park, say — not once the light comes on.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching your diesel tank

The day the light comes on, anywhere around Staffordshire, use this routine.

- Park and switch off. Not on a slope, not with your motor running, and not in a rush on the side of Cambrian.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, after you find the AdBlue filler and read it. Daft, perhaps, yet it does the trick.

- If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — and leave the car on.

- Stop when your tank is topped up or the bottle is empty; until then, pour slowly through the own spout.

- Close the cap and check once more. Make sure the diesel cap was never opened. Only then start your car.

If at stage two or three you find you have already poured into your diesel side, stop there.

Stage five stays off limits.

## Glascote Heath: already put AdBlue in the diesel tank?

Then the order of things is short. Do not start the motor.

On many diesels your ignition alone runs the fuel pump, so do not switch the car on.

AdBlue does not mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of that tank, where your fuel is pulled from — so don't top up with diesel to thin it.

At a forecourt — Morrisons, Texaco or another — the staff will normally help roll your car clear, when you ask.

Leave it where it is if you are on your own driveway around Glascote Heath.

Where the motor has been run by now, stop safely then switch the vehicle off.

Come off the M42 — under 3 miles out of Glascote Heath — at the next exit.

Roughly how far did it go? Crossing Glascote Heath is less a job than a trip of under 10 miles to Lichfield, so say.

## Glascote Heath: what takes place when we arrive

By Glascote Academy, close to St Peter's Community Church or on your own drive: wherever the car has stopped, our engineers come to it.

Which liquid got in, the amount, and if it ran: we ask because the replies decide the work and price.

You get that price on the phone, before anybody sets off.

Draining that tank comes next, then a full flush of your system.

Not like petrol, AdBlue forms crystals and eats at some fuel-system metals, and neither washes out by itself. Hence it matters more.

Your filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and the car is tested.

Next we start it and confirm it runs smoothly before we go.

Using pumps safe on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night, most jobs in which the motor hasn't run need about half an hour after we arrive.

Nothing in advance; you settle up that day. At the end, a VAT invoice and the report from the engineer go to you for the insurer.

Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it is worth checking yours whilst we're on the way.

Awkward to explain, like the back of Tamworth Sports Stadium? Close to a border? Asking is better than assuming, so ring.
