# Preventing AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Glebe: Why It Occurs

AdBlue already in the diesel tank? In that case put this page aside a moment, leave the ignition and engine off, and phone 0333 366 0103.

Caught before your engine runs, it is usually a drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is around Glebe.

Not happened yet? Below, the page explains the why it takes place and the how to avoid it for good.

## AdBlue in a diesel motor: two tanks, two fillers

Plenty of modern diesels around Washington, as well as Glebe, run on two fluids; your motor takes just the diesel.

Your exhaust, not your engine, is where AdBlue goes: sprayed into the fumes to fresh it, from a separate tank.

Different tanks, separate fillers.

Under one flap, next to each other: that is the arrangement on many vehicles. Elsewhere, AdBlue's filler sits beneath the bonnet or in your boot instead.

The diesel side is topped up at the pump all the time.

Far less commonly, the AdBlue side is filled — normally from a bottle, by someone thinking about where it goes.

The mistake grows in that gap between the two.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank around Glebe: how it occurs

Rarely is it carelessness: usually three things coincide.

Haste follows from the warning. Your car warns you as AdBlue runs low, and a dry tank sends it into limp mode — so the top-up happens in a rush, before work on a drive off Parkway, or heading home in the car park outside The Black Bush.

The old car's filler is where your hand reaches — but a rental car, a new vehicle or a company car puts the fillers somewhere else. That's the second thing: a strange motor.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, so nothing stops the pour once it has started.

It takes seconds, be it in Washington Village or bang in the centre of Glebe.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from the diesel filler

Be it a Glebe forecourt or a driveway out in Columbia, take a few seconds over these before anything is poured in.

- Blue and lettering: an AdBlue cap is often blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap normally does not. Trust the cap, not where it sits.

- On many cars, size tells: AdBlue has the smaller filler neck.

- Open the flap and check for a label — many cars show what goes in which filler right there.

- The handbook says where it is if the filler is not next to the diesel cap: your boot, or under the bonnet.

- The previous driver will know. Ask as you pick up a hire car or company car — from Chester-Le-Street's car park, say — not when the light appears.

## How to top up without AdBlue in the diesel tank

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever across Tyne and Wear that is.

- Not in a rush on the side of Fatfield Road, not on a slope, not with your engine running: park then switch off first.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds silly and it works.

- If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — and leave the vehicle on.

- Tip slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it is full or when the bottle is empty.

- Close the cap and check again. Make sure the diesel cap was never opened. Only then start your car.

Discover at the second or third stage that the bottle went in the wrong tank? That's where you stop.

Don't go on to step five.

## Glebe: already put AdBlue in your diesel tank?

Brief list, then. Top of it: your motor remains unstarted.

Keep the ignition off too, since on plenty of diesels it alone starts your fuel pump.

Topping up with diesel will not dilute it: rather than mixing, AdBlue sinks to the base of your tank, just where fuel is drawn from.

Ask the staff to help push the vehicle clear of the pump if you're on a forecourt — the Sainsbury's, the another forecourt nearby or somewhere else.

At home in Glebe? Then the car stays put.

When your motor has been run by now, stop somewhere safe then turn the vehicle off.

Leave the Western Highway — under 3 miles out of Glebe — at the first junction.

Mileage matters — a short hop across Glebe is a smaller job than heading under 10 miles towards Sunderland — so tell us about how far it went.

## When our technicians get there in Glebe, what takes place?

Our van comes to the vehicle anywhere it has come to rest — your own driveway, near Our Lady's Catholic Church, or by Wessington Primary School.

Those answers settle this work and the price, and so our technicians ask what got in, about how much, and whether it's run.

No one sets off before you've heard the price by phone.

The system is then purged thoroughly, once your tank is cleared.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it doesn't wash out on its own — which is why the flush counts more here than with petrol.

The filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and your car is tested.

Before we go, our engineers start the car and make sure that it's running smoothly.

Most jobs are done in roughly half an hour after our technicians get there, provided your engine hasn't run — and the pumps our engineers use are safe on a live forecourt yet quiet after dark beside a house.

Payment is on the day, not upfront, and you are given the paperwork an insurer asks for: an engineer's report and a VAT invoice.

Before we get there, take a look at your policy; many include cover for misfuelling.

## About Glebe, for a moment

Glebe is a suburban area located on the riverside in Tyne and Wear, with an elevation of around 64 metres. Glebe sits approximately 5.5 miles from Sunderland and is near other local places such as Washington Village and Biddick. ## AdBlue drains across Tyne and Wear, Glebe included

Glebe is a residential suburb, and the teams that cover it also work the places around it, Biddick and Town Centre among them, across the NE postcode area.

A postcode starting NE38 7 gets our van to you fastest.

There's no need to shift the vehicle.

Anywhere it stands — near Washington Old Hall, in a lay-by en route to Glebe Park, at home — that's where it gets cleared.

Tricky to pin down, like the back of Holy Trinity? By a border? Asking is better than guessing, so ring.

## In short, for Glebe motorists

Always, the cap; then, the pour.

Petrol in Diesel drains it on the spot, anywhere across Tyne and Wear, if AdBlue has gone in the diesel tank all the same — so leave the car off and phone 0333 366 0103.
