# Don't Start It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Gledhow

With AdBlue in the diesel tank, your ignition stays off and so does your motor.

Water with urea mixed in it: that's AdBlue.

The harm begins once it is sucked through your lines — it will not ignite, and it will not blend with diesel.

Caught before your engine has been run, AdBlue in a diesel tank is generally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is in Gledhow.

Before anything, call us on 0333 366 0103.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank around Gledhow: the first few minutes

To do:

- Keys out — that way nobody can switch anything on.

- If you're at all near moving traffic, put your hazards on.

- Which product, and roughly what volume? Save the bottle or the receipt, and our engineers will know.

- Ring right where you are. Say a LS8 1 postcode or the closest street name, and nobody has to hunt for you.

Never do these:

- Do not start the engine, even for a moment to shift your car.

- Don't switch the ignition on. On many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

- Adding more diesel does not work: AdBlue separates out rather than thinning.

- Do not drive the car anywhere, not even a short way along Gledhow Lane.

- Beside the road, don't attempt draining it yourself.

Rolling your vehicle away from the island is a job for attendants to help with, whichever Gledhow forecourt you're on, the BP included.

Parked on your own drive? Then it stays exactly where it is.

## What does AdBlue do in a diesel tank?

Made for the exhaust, AdBlue has no place in the engine.

It goes into its own tank and is sprayed into your exhaust gas to clean it.

Not one side fits the other: urea does not belong in an injection pump, and an injection pump cannot deal with urea.

Poured in with your diesel, it keeps apart instead of blending — quite different from fuel.

The intake takes fuel from the deepest part of the tank, and that is just where AdBlue ends up: being heavier than diesel, it sinks.

Easiest of all: a vehicle that got AdBlue in Potternewton overnight and hasn't turned since. The AdBlue waits at the base of the tank, undrawn — but it would be the first thing through once the engine starts, before any diesel at all.

From there it does two kinds of damage.

What is left once the water evaporates is urea, which forms crystals: they settle in narrow passages and clog filters. On top of that, it attacks certain metals in the fuel system, and carries on till it is flushed out.

Lines holding AdBlue mean damage overnight for a car sitting in Gledhow. Only in your tank, it stays stable.

Water lubricates nothing. The high-pressure pump and each injector depend on diesel flowing past them, and so the water content harms them by itself.

## AdBlue in a diesel: why it's often worse than petrol

Put petrol in a diesel at the Esso and you have a fault of thin fuel.

It mixes with the diesel, and whilst it is inside that tank it does no damage; the damage comes from running the engine on it.

The trouble with AdBlue in a diesel is a totally wrong substance.

Not burning, it cannot just be run through.

It doesn't stay mixed, and so it can't be weakened. And crystals and corrosion do not wash out with the next tank of fuel. That is why the flush counts more with AdBlue than with petrol, and why starting the engine "to see" costs more here than nearly anywhere else, whether the vehicle is in Oakwood or the middle of Gledhow.

The good news is the same as with petrol.

Never started? Then the AdBlue sits just inside the tank, the easiest bit of the entire system to empty, wherever the car has come to rest around West Yorkshire.

## How AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank in Gledhow

No one means to do it. The AdBlue filler on plenty of vehicles waits right next to the diesel filler, occasionally under the same flap, and the two caps can look alike in poor light.

Mostly it is not the forecourt: a driver picks up a container heading home and pours it in outside the house.

Mostly, it happens in one of a couple of familiar ways.

Hurrying, outside Kerr Mackie Primary School, after a warning light came on during the school run, someone tops up your car.

After work, a bottle is tipped in on a drive close to The Laurels.

Or someone unfamiliar with that flap refills the vehicle after dark, parked in the car park by Yorkshire Amateur FC.

It takes place most in the motors people know least: a hire car, a new motor, a company car, or the second vehicle of a household with one diesel and one petrol.

Wherever across West Yorkshire, Gledhow included, the slip does not change, and neither does the first step: leave it switched off.

## Already started the engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank in Gledhow?

In that case, the AdBlue is no longer inside your tank.

Given any running, it travels to the high-pressure pump and each injector, after passing through the filter and lines.

Perhaps returning from Gledhow Valley Woods, or part way across Gledhow, your motor may go lumpy, smoke, lose pace, light up the dash or cut out.

No starting it again to test: stop when it is safe, then turn it off.

Every start pulls more of that through.

On the A64(M), under 3 miles from Gledhow, the next junction is where to leave, and somewhere safe is where to stop — not carrying on.

How far it went counts. A few hundred yards across Gledhow to the car park by Lidgett Park Methodist Church is a very different job from a run towards Leeds, under 3 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into the system with every mile.

Let us know roughly how far it had come.

There is more to flush once the engine has run, and we do all of it where the vehicle has ended up.

Noticed soon, it very seldom leaves permanent damage.

## Gledhow: how AdBlue is cleared from a diesel

Wherever it has come to rest around Gledhow — a filling station, a lay-by, a drive, a street beside Polish Catholic Centre — the van comes to your vehicle.

The work rests on three replies, and we ask for first — which fluid was put in, the quantity, and whether your motor has run.

Then the tank is drained where your car sits, so the contaminated fuel and the AdBlue come out together.

A careful flush matters much more after AdBlue than with petrol, since residue will not clear away on its own.

The fuel filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and the car is tested.

Most of these jobs are a half-hour job once our engineers arrive, provided the engine has not run.

The pumps are explosion-proof, fine on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

Priming the fuel system with clean diesel comes at the end.

Whether it is a parking bay at Leeds or a driveway around Gledhow, that is where our engineers fire it up and you set off.

It is checked on clean diesel to make sure it runs correctly before we head off.

The whole job is done where the car is, so it never needs to go to a garage.

Afterwards, there is the paperwork for your insurer: a VAT invoice and a report from the engineer.

## About Gledhow, for a moment

Gledhow is a suburban area in West Yorkshire, situated near the outskirts of Leeds and adjacent to lakeside scenery. Gledhow sits at an elevation of 114 metres, with semi-detached housing being the predominant type of accommodation. Gledhow is close to nearby places such as Lidgett Park and Harehills Corner, and is approximately 2.3 miles from Leeds city centre.

## AdBlue drains around Gledhow and across West Yorkshire

Throughout the LS postcode area, the vans taking AdBlue call-outs in Gledhow reach much of West Yorkshire too, Lidgett Park, Harehills Corner and Lady Wood among them.

If you're near a border, or somewhere hard to explain, ring and ask rather than guessing.

Gledhow is a residential suburb, and a call-out drain suits it: whether your car is on a home drive, a residential street, a car park or a forecourt, we drain it where it is, and so it never needs to be moved to us.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank around Gledhow: the cost of fixing it

Since the callouts vary, a single figure would not be fair.

Whether the motor has been running, and for how long, comes first in what shifts the cost. How much AdBlue got in comes next, and then the position of the vehicle, because an open driveway is simpler for our van to reach safely than a tight space behind Oakwood Library.

What went in, how much, plus if it ran: each Gledhow call begins with exactly that, ahead of any figure, not afterwards.

Once they are known, a range turns into one fixed figure.

The price is quoted during the call, before a van leaves; payment happens on the day, by card or over the phone, with nothing upfront.

While the van is on the way, check your insurance: many include misfuelling.

## Gledhow: still beside the vehicle?

Then, touch nothing — that is the most helpful step available.

Motor off, keys out, ignition off.

Ring 0333 366 0103 then tell us it is AdBlue, roughly how much, and if it's run. Petrol in Diesel takes it from there, in Gledhow or anywhere in West Yorkshire.
