# Avoiding AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Glen Parva: Why It Occurs

Pause here a minute when the diesel tank already holds AdBlue in it: ignition off, motor off, and ring 0333 366 0103.

Normally, if the engine has not run, it's drained and fully rinsed where your car is around Glen Parva.

The rest of this page covers why it happens and how to make sure it doesn't — useful if you are reading before it has happened.

## Why does AdBlue in a diesel motor need its own filler?

No single fluid but two: that is how plenty of newer diesels around Glen Parva and Blaby run, with diesel for the engine.

The exhaust, not the engine, is where AdBlue ends up: dosed into the gas to fresh them, from a separate tank.

Each tank has its own filler.

Many of motors share a single flap for the two, while some put the AdBlue filler to the boot or under the bonnet.

Topping up your diesel side at the pump goes on all the time.

Much less frequently, the AdBlue side gets topped up — normally from a bottle, by a person working out where it goes.

It is in the gap that the slip happens.

## How AdBlue in the diesel tank occurs around Glen Parva

It is rarely carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

Haste follows from the warning. The vehicle tells you as AdBlue runs low, and a dry tank puts the vehicle into limp mode — so the top-up happens quickly, before work on a driveway off Holts Close, or on the way home in the car park outside The Scarlet Pimpernel.

The old car's filler is where the hand goes — but a rental car, a new vehicle or a company car puts the fillers somewhere else. That is a second thing: an unfamiliar car.

Third, the bottle goes in: a diesel filler or AdBlue filler, it goes in just as readily, and once the pour starts, nothing stops it.

The same few seconds settle it, in the middle of Glen Parva or out in Fosse Park.

## The AdBlue filler and your diesel filler: telling them apart

Before you pour anything, whether on a drive in Aylestone Park or a forecourt around Glen Parva, check these. They take a couple of seconds.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is regularly blue, or marked "AdBlue". Your diesel cap normally is not. Read it rather than going by where it sits.

- Many vehicles fit AdBlue the smaller neck of the two.

- A label inside the fuel flap frequently shows which fuel goes where, on many vehicles. Check for it.

- The handbook. If your filler is not by your diesel cap, it's in your boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- Check with the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — when you collect a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park outside South Wigston.

## AdBlue top-ups that never reach the diesel tank

On the day the warning appears — anywhere it is in Leicestershire — a simple routine to follow.

- Pull in somewhere level, engine off, with time to spare — not hurried on the side of Gilmorton Avenue.

- Daft as it sounds, speaking "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap works — once you've found your filler and read it.

- If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — then leave the car on.

- Slowly is best, through the bottle's own spout, until it's full or the bottle runs out.

- Close the cap and check a second time. Make sure your diesel cap was never opened. Only then start your car.

If at step two or three you find you have already poured into the diesel side, stop there.

Leave out stage five entirely.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank already, around Glen Parva?

Brief list, then. First: the motor remains off.

On plenty of diesels the ignition alone runs the fuel pump, so do not switch the vehicle on.

Filling up with diesel won't dilute it: instead, AdBlue drops to the base of your tank, just where the fuel is taken from.

Ask the staff to help roll your car clear of the petrol pump if you are at a forecourt — the Asda, the Sainsbury's or anywhere else.

Leave it where it is if you're on your own drive around Glen Parva.

Where your engine has been run by now, pull over somewhere safe then turn the vehicle off.

On the M1, under 3 miles from Glen Parva, that means the next exit.

About how far did it go? Crossing Glen Parva is less a job than a trip of under 5 miles towards Leicester, so tell us.

## When our technicians turn up around Glen Parva, what occurs?

Outside Glen Hills Primary School, close to Memorial Hall or on your own driveway: wherever the car has stopped, our technicians come to it.

The answers settle the work and the price, and so we ask what was put in, roughly how much, and whether it's run.

You hear that price on the phone, before anyone heads out.

Next: draining, then a thorough flush of the entire system.

Not like petrol, AdBlue forms crystals and attacks some fuel-system metals, and none of that washes away by itself. Hence it counts more.

The filter cleaned or, where needed, replaced; clean diesel in; and then a check of your car.

After that our technicians fire it up and check it runs smoothly before leaving.

Unrun cars mostly need a half-hour job from the moment we arrive. The kit is fine on a live forecourt, and hushed enough for a driveway after dark.

Payment happens on the day, not upfront, and you are given the paperwork an insurer wants: an engineer report and a VAT invoice.

Misfuelling cover is part of many insurance policies — so make use of the wait to look at yours.
