# Preventing AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Golds Green: Why It Happens

Stop here for a moment if the diesel tank already has AdBlue in it: ignition off, engine off, and phone 0333 366 0103.

A drain and a thorough flush, done just where the vehicle stands around Golds Green, is normally all it takes when found before the engine runs.

If you are reading before it has happened, the rest of this page is about why it takes place and how to make sure it doesn't.

## Why does AdBlue in a diesel motor need its own filler?

Diesel feeds your engine — yet many modern diesels seen around Golds Green and Tipton carry a second liquid too.

The exhaust, not the motor, is where AdBlue goes: dosed into the fumes to fresh it, from its own tank.

Different tanks, separate fillers.

Under one flap, side by side: that is the arrangement on a lot of motors. Elsewhere, AdBlue's filler is under the bonnet or in your boot instead.

The diesel side is topped up at the pump all the time.

Much less often, the AdBlue side gets filled — normally from a bottle, by a person thinking about where it goes.

The mistake grows in that gap between the two.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank around Golds Green: how it takes place

Carelessness seldom explains it. Instead is three things coming up at once.

First, the warning. Low AdBlue brings a message from the car, and letting it run dry means limp mode — so a rushed top-up, perhaps before work off Puddingbag Street, perhaps at The Miners Arms on the way home that evening.

Next, the hand reaches for the cap it would have used on the old motor — since a hire car, a new vehicle or a company car puts the fillers where your last one did not.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, so nothing stops the tip once it has started.

The same few seconds settle it, in the middle of Golds Green or out in Golds Hill.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

A couple of seconds is all the checks take — so check them before you pour anything, on a drive in Toll End or a forecourt around Golds Green.

- Blue and marking: an AdBlue cap is often blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap normally does not. Trust the cap, not where it sits.

- Many motors give AdBlue the smaller filler of the two.

- Look inside your fuel flap: many motors carry a label there showing which fuel goes where.

- The handbook. If the filler is not by your diesel cap, it is in your boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- The previous driver knows. Check when you collect a hire car or fleet car — at Dudley Port's car park, say — not when the light comes on.

## AdBlue top-ups that never reach the diesel tank

Anywhere across West Midlands the light comes on, this is a routine for that day.

- Switch off after you park — level ground, motor stopped, and not in a rush by Danks Way at the roadside.

- Silly as it sounds, speaking "AdBlue" out loud while you unscrew the cap does the trick — after you've located your filler and read it.

- Leave your diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Slowly is best, through the bottle's own spout, till it is full or the bottle runs out.

- Only after that, start the car: close the cap, check again, and make sure the diesel cap was never opened.

Spot at stage two or three that it has already gone into the diesel side? Then stop just there.

Never carry on to stage five.

## Put AdBlue in your diesel tank in Golds Green already?

Then the order of things is short. Do not start the motor.

On plenty of diesels the ignition alone runs the fuel pump, and so don't switch the car on.

Do not top up with diesel to dilute it: AdBlue does not mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of the tank, where your fuel is pulled from.

At a forecourt — City Fuels (HGV Only), Asda or another — the staff will normally help push the car away, if you ask.

Leave it where it is if you are on your own driveway around Golds Green.

Where your engine has run by now, stop safely and turn the car off.

Come off the M6 — under 3 miles out of Golds Green — at the first exit.

A short hop across Golds Green is a smaller job than a run towards Wolverhampton, under 10 miles away, and so tell us about how far it went.

## When we turn up around Golds Green, what happens?

Wherever the car came to rest, be it by Harvills Hawthorn Primary School, near SJP Youth Group or at home, our van comes to it.

Which liquid got in, the amount, and whether it ran: our technicians ask since those answers decide both work and quote.

Nobody heads out until you've had our quote by phone.

Then your tank is drained and the fuel system purged thoroughly.

With AdBlue that matters more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it doesn't wash out on its own.

A test is at the end: before that, clean diesel is added, and your filter is flushed or changed if necessary.

We don't go until it has been started and is running smoothly.

If the motor hasn't run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once we're there, using pumps that are safe on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

Payment is on the day, not upfront, and you receive the paperwork your insurer asks for: an engineer report and a VAT invoice.

Misfuelling cover is part of many insurance policies — so make use of the wait to look at yours.
