# Avoiding AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Goose Green: Why It Happens

Pause reading a minute if the diesel tank already has AdBlue in it: ignition off, motor off, then call 0333 366 0103.

Usually, if the motor has not turned, it's emptied and thoroughly cleaned where your car is around Goose Green.

Not happened yet? Further down, the rest of the page explains the reasons it takes place and the ways to avoid it for good.

## AdBlue in a diesel car: two tanks, two fillers

Not one fluid but two: that is how many modern diesels around Goose Green and Highfield run, with diesel for the motor.

AdBlue goes to the exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to clean it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Different tanks, separate fillers.

On a lot of motors the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in the boot or under the bonnet.

At the petrol pump, your diesel side gets filled constantly.

Seldom topped up, AdBlue normally comes from a bottle, tipped by a driver who has to stop and think what cap it needs.

The error lives in that gap.

## How does AdBlue in the diesel tank take place around Goose Green?

Rarely is it carelessness: usually three things coincide.

To start with, the warning. Low AdBlue triggers a message from your car, and running out leads to limp mode — so a hurried top-up, perhaps before work off Bentinck Street, perhaps at New Inn on the way home that evening.

New-to-you cars are next, as well. Rentals, new cars and company motors put their fillers differently, and habit reaches for the cap it used on the old one.

No part stops the pour after it has started, because a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as readily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits.

Hawkley or the middle of Goose Green: it takes the same few seconds either way.

## The AdBlue filler and your diesel filler: telling them apart

Whether a Goose Green forecourt or a drive out in Spring Bank, spend a few seconds over these before any goes in.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is often blue, or marked "AdBlue". Your diesel cap usually isn't. Read it instead of going by position.

- The size. On plenty of vehicles the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- Open the flap and look for a label — plenty of motors mark which belongs in which inlet right there.

- The handbook. If your filler is not by your diesel cap, it is in the boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- The person who drove the vehicle last. On a hire or company car picked up from somewhere like the car park outside Pemberton, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

## AdBlue top-ups that never reach your diesel tank

For the day the warning comes on — anywhere you are around Greater Manchester — a simple routine to follow.

- Park and switch off. Not on a slope, not with the motor running, and not in a rush on the side of Sefton Road.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds silly and it works.

- The diesel cap stays on. When both sit under a flap, confirm it is closed before lifting the bottle.

- Gently is best, through the bottle's own spout, until it is full or the bottle runs out.

- Close the cap and check a second time. Make sure your diesel cap was never opened. Only then start the vehicle.

Discover during the second or third step that the bottle went into the wrong filler? That's where you stop.

Never go on to step five.

## Already put AdBlue in the diesel tank in Goose Green?

Then the order of things is short. Do not start the engine.

Don't switch the ignition on; on many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

Do not top up with diesel to thin it: AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where the fuel is drawn from.

The staff at BP, Asda or any forecourt will usually lend a hand pushing the vehicle away when you ask.

Leave it where it is if you're on your own driveway in Goose Green.

When the motor has been run already, stop safely then switch the car off.

Goose Green sits under a mile from the Bryn Spur; on it, take the next exit.

Roughly how far did it go? Hopping across Goose Green is less a job than a run of under 25 miles to Salford, and so tell us.

## What happens when our engineers get there in Goose Green

The van comes to your car anywhere it stopped — your own driveway, near St Pauls Church, or outside St Paul's Church of England Primary School.

We ask what got in, roughly how much, and whether it has run, since the answers determine this work and our price.

Nobody heads out before you've had the quote over the phone.

The fuel system is then purged thoroughly, after that tank is drained.

With AdBlue that counts more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it doesn't wash out on its own.

Filter flushed or, where needed, swapped; clean diesel in; then a test of the vehicle.

We don't go until it has been started and is running correctly.

Most jobs are finished in about half an hour once we get there, as long as your engine hasn't run — and the pumps our engineers use are safe on a live forecourt yet quiet at night outside a house.

The insurer will ask for an engineer's report and your VAT invoice, and you get both once the job is done. Payment comes on the day, with no deposit.

Before we get there, take a look at your policy; many include cover for misfuelling.

## Goose Green people: the short version

Tip no AdBlue till you have read the cap.

Petrol in Diesel drains it on the spot, anywhere around Greater Manchester, if AdBlue has gone in your diesel tank all the same — and so leave the vehicle off and ring 0333 366 0103.
