# AdBlue in the Diesel Tank in Goose Green? Keep It Switched Off

AdBlue in your diesel tank? Then keep your engine off — and the ignition too.

Water with urea mixed in it: that's AdBlue.

As it is water-based, it won't ignite and won't blend with diesel; damage just starts once the pump begins pulling it.

A drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is around Goose Green, is usually what AdBlue in a diesel tank takes — if it is caught before the motor has run.

Before anything, call us on 0333 366 0103.

## Those opening minutes: AdBlue in the diesel tank around Goose Green

To do:

- Keys out — that way no one can switch anything on.

- Hazards on, if moving traffic is anywhere close.

- So you can give us which liquid it was and roughly how much, save your receipt or the empty bottle.

- Tell us a postcode starting SO43 7, or whichever street is nearest, and our van reaches you straight — so ring wherever you are.

Don't do these:

- Not even for a second, and not to shift your car: your engine remains off.

- Your ignition remains off: on many diesels, turning it on is enough to run the fuel pump.

- AdBlue does not dilute in diesel — it separates out — so adding extra diesel will not weaken it.

- Leave the car where it is instead of driving it anywhere, even a short stretch along Goose Green.

- Draining the tank on your own beside the road is not worth trying.

Ask the people behind the counter to help you move your car away from the pumps if you're on a forecourt around Goose Green, whether it is the Esso or elsewhere.

On your own drive, do not touch it at all.

## What does AdBlue do in a diesel tank?

AdBlue is made for the exhaust, not the motor.

From a separate tank it goes straight to the exhaust, treating what the engine emits.

A fuel pump is not made to take it, and AdBlue was never intended to travel through one.

It does not combine. Once it's tipped into a tank of diesel, AdBlue behaves not at all like fuel.

It sinks, since it is heavier than diesel, and settles down where the pickup takes its fuel from.

A motor topped up on a driveway in Pikes Hill overnight and left unstarted counts as the straightforward case. Nothing has pulled the AdBlue up so far — though once the engine turns, that is what goes first, straight from the bottom of the tank.

Once it is sucked in, the harm comes in two forms.

As its water goes, the urea left behind crystallises, and the crystals block filters and settle in fine passages. And it's corrosive to some of the metals a fuel system is made from, so it keeps labouring on the parts it hits for as long as it stays there.

A car left standing around Goose Green with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue only in its tank is not.

Water lubricates nothing. The injection pump and every injector need diesel flowing past them, so the water part damages them in its own right.

## Petrol or AdBlue in a diesel: why AdBlue is regularly worse

Petrol put into a diesel on Texaco's forecourt leaves your fuel watery — that's the main fault.

Mixed into your diesel and left unused, it is no threat at that stage; running the engine is the harm.

With AdBlue in a diesel, the fluid as such is simply the wrong one.

It does not burn, so it can't simply be run through.

Deposits and corrosion stay after the next fill, and AdBlue separates back out of your diesel, so thinning it can't work. That is why the flush matters more, and turning the key "to see" costs more with AdBlue than almost any other mistake — in Emery Down or the heart of Goose Green alike.

The same good news applies as with petrol.

Wherever across Hampshire your vehicle has come to rest, an unrun motor leaves the AdBlue still inside the tank: the easiest part of a fuel system to empty.

## Goose Green: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

It is not deliberate. Many cars keep the AdBlue cap alongside the diesel inlet, now and then behind one flap, and muddling them up is simple in poor light.

A container bought when driving home and tipped in at home, instead of at the forecourt, is the typical story.

A couple of familiar ways account for most cases.

Halfway through the morning drop-off, the dashboard warns, and outside St Michael and All Angels CofE Infant School the top-up is rushed.

A bottle is poured in at the end of the day on a drive just off Chapel Lane.

Or the vehicle is topped up in the car park outside The Crown Stirrup, in poor light, by a person who has never opened that flap before.

Hired motors, brand-new vehicles, fleet cars, or the second vehicle in a family with one of each: the least known vehicles see it most.

Wherever you are in Goose Green or the rest of Hampshire, it is the same mistake and the same first answer: leave the vehicle off.

## Already started the motor with AdBlue in the diesel tank around Goose Green?

If so, the AdBlue is no longer in that tank.

Through your filter, through the pipework, and — given any running time — into the injection pump and every injector: that is where it has gone.

You may notice the engine running roughly, smoking, losing power, showing warning lights or cutting out, possibly on the way back from King's House Garden or halfway across Goose Green.

Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and do not restart it to check.

With each start, more of it is pulled through.

Goose Green sits under 5 miles from the M27; if you were on it, exit by the first junction and stop safely rather than driving on.

How far it went counts. A couple of hundred yards across Goose Green to the car park by Foxlease House is a very different job from a run towards Southampton, under 10 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into your system with each mile.

Roughly how far had it come? Tell us.

Once the motor has run, the flush takes in more, and all of it is done where the car has come to a stop.

Very seldom does it leave permanent damage if it is spotted early.

## What clearing AdBlue from a diesel involves in Goose Green

Anywhere it has come to rest around Goose Green — a forecourt, a lay-by, a driveway, a street by Lyndhurst Lawn Tennis Club — our van travels to the car.

The job depends on three answers, which our technicians ask for first — what went in, the quantity, and if your engine has run.

The contaminated diesel and the urea leave as one when that tank is emptied, on the spot.

Residue from AdBlue won't flush away by itself, so the fuel system gets a full flush, which matters far more here than with petrol.

Testing your vehicle comes last, once fresh diesel is added and the filter is flushed or, where needed, swapped.

Not run? In that case expect about half an hour on site for most jobs.

Quiet enough for use outside a house at night, and safe on a busy forecourt, the pumps are explosion-proof.

New diesel goes in to bleed the system, and that's the final step.

Firing it up comes next, and then you drive off from where the car is parked, at Ashurst New Forest or on a driveway in Goose Green.

It is checked on new diesel to make sure it runs correctly before our engineers head off.

Our technicians do it all wherever your car has ended up, and it never needs to go to a workshop.

The insurer is likely to want an engineer's report and your VAT invoice — each handed over afterwards.

## Goose Green: what AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to fix

Not one single price would be honest, because every job differs.

Whether the engine has been running, and for how long, comes first in what shifts the price. How much AdBlue got in comes next, and then the position of your car, because an open driveway is simpler for our van to get to safely than a tight spot behind Vernon Theatre.

What was put in, how much, and if it ran: each Goose Green call begins by asking exactly those, ahead of a figure, not after.

When those are answered, a range becomes one fixed figure.

Before anyone heads out, you hear our quote by phone. And you pay on the day, by card or over the phone, with nothing upfront.

As the van is travelling, check your policy: many cover misfuelling.

## In Goose Green and still alongside the vehicle?

Then, touch nothing — that is the best step available.

Keys out; engine and ignition off.
