# Gortaclare: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Avoid It?

Keep your motor and ignition off then ring 0333 366 0103 now — reading can wait when AdBlue is already in the diesel tank.

Caught before the motor runs, it is normally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is in Gortaclare.

Not happened yet? Below, the page explains the reasons it happens and the ways to prevent it for good.

## Why does AdBlue in a diesel vehicle need its own filler?

Plenty of modern diesels on the roads about Gortaclare and Garvaghey carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to your motor.

AdBlue goes to your exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to fresh it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

There's a filler for each tank.

Plenty of cars have a single flap for the two, while others move the AdBlue filler to the boot or under the bonnet.

At the pump, the diesel side gets filled all the time.

A driver who has to stop and work out where it goes normally tops up the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and much less regularly.

That gap is where the error lives.

## Gortaclare: how AdBlue in your diesel tank happens

Three things tend to come together, and carelessness is rarely one of them.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low your car tells you, and if it runs out altogether, the car goes into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a drive off Wallace Cottages before work, or in the car park outside the pub in the village on the way home.

The old car's filler is where your hand reaches — but a rental car, a new car or a company car keeps the fillers somewhere else. That's the second thing: a new vehicle.

A spout-topped bottle finds no resistance at a diesel filler any more than at an AdBlue one. And so the pour, once started, keeps on.

Seskinore or the heart of Gortaclare: it takes the same few seconds either way.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

A couple of seconds is all the checks take — so check them before you pour anything, on a drive in Sixmilecross or a forecourt in Gortaclare.

- Colour and marking: an AdBlue cap is regularly blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap normally does not. Go by the cap, not its position.

- On many motors, size gives it away: AdBlue has the smaller filler neck.

- Look inside your fuel flap: many motors carry a label there saying which fuel goes where.

- The handbook shows where it is if your filler is not next to your diesel cap: the boot, or under the bonnet.

- Collecting a hire or company car, perhaps at the car park outside the nearest station? Check with the person who drove it last before you set off, not once the light comes on.

## Keeping AdBlue out of your diesel tank when you top up

On the day the warning appears — anywhere you are across County Tyrone — a simple routine to follow.

- Not in a rush on the side of Dunaverty Court, not on a slope, not with your motor running: park and switch off first.

- Locate the AdBlue filler, read the cap, and speak the name "AdBlue" aloud while you unscrew it. It sounds silly. It does the trick.

- Leave the diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Using the bottle's own spout, tip slowly — and stop when it's full or the bottle is empty.

- Close the cap and check again. Make sure the diesel cap was never opened. Only then start the vehicle.

Stop there if you find, at step two or three, that you've already poured into the diesel side.

Never go on to step five.

## Already put AdBlue in the diesel tank in Gortaclare?

Then the order of things is short. Don't start the motor.

On many diesels the ignition alone runs the fuel pump, and so don't switch the vehicle on.

Don't top up with diesel to dilute it: AdBlue does not mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of the tank, where the fuel is pulled from.

The attendants at the nearest petrol station, another forecourt nearby or another forecourt will normally help pushing the car away when you ask.

At home around Gortaclare? So the car remains where it is.

If your motor has already run, stop as soon as it is safe and switch off.

Leave the M77 — over 50 miles out of Gortaclare — at the next junction.

Distance matters — a short hop across Gortaclare is a smaller job than driving under 50 miles to Armagh — so say about how far it went.

## What takes place when we get there in Gortaclare

Anywhere your car has stopped, whether by the local primary school, beside the centre or on your own drive, the van comes to it.

Both the work and the quote depend on three replies — which fluid, what amount, and whether it has run — so our engineers ask.

During the call itself, you hear our quote — before dispatch.

Emptying that tank comes next, followed by a full flush of the fuel system.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it does not wash out on its own — which is why the flush counts more with AdBlue than with petrol.

Your filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and the car is tested.

The engine is started next and tested to be sure it runs correctly, all before we head off.

Most jobs are done in about half an hour once our engineers arrive, as long as your engine hasn't run — and the pumps our technicians use are fine on a busy forecourt and quiet after dark beside a house.

You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer.

Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it is worth checking yours whilst we're on the way.

## AdBlue drains across County Tyrone, Gortaclare included

Beragh and Eskra are among the places near Gortaclare, a small village, that the same vans cover, over BT postcodes.

A postcode starting BT79 0 gets the van to you fastest.

The car doesn't need to move.

A drive, a lay-by on the way to the green space at the edge of the village, a side street close to a street just off the centre: we drain it where it sits.

If you are close to a border, or somewhere hard to describe like the back of the far end of the built-up part, ring and ask rather than guessing.
