# Gosfield: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Leave It Off

Engine off, ignition off: that's where you start if AdBlue has gone into the diesel tank.

AdBlue is urea mixed in water.

It doesn't burn, it doesn't mix with diesel, and the harm it does starts when the fuel system draws it in.

If the motor has not run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is generally emptied and thoroughly cleaned where the vehicle stands in Gosfield.

No step comes before calling 0333 366 0103.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank around Gosfield: the first few minutes

Do these:

- Take the keys out, so nobody switches the ignition on.

- Put the hazards on if you're anywhere near moving traffic.

- Hold on to the till receipt or the empty bottle, and so you can tell us what went in and about how much.

- Call us from where you are. A postcode starting CO9 1, or the name of the nearest street, brings our van to you without a search.

Not to do:

- No starting your engine — not briefly, not to reposition your car.

- Switching the key to ignition by itself sets your pump going on many diesels. Skip it.

- No more fuel on top. The AdBlue won't blend, and so it is wasted.

- Keep it where it is instead of driving it anywhere, even a short distance down Church Road.

- Beside the road, don't try emptying it yourself.

The staff working at any Gosfield forecourt — the Mount Hill Garage among them — will usually help pushing it aside if you ask.

At your own drive, don't touch it at all.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank, and what it does there

Not the motor but your exhaust is where AdBlue belongs.

From a dedicated reservoir it goes straight to the exhaust, cleaning what the engine emits.

A fuel pump is not made to take it, and AdBlue was never supposed to go through one.

Fuel blends; AdBlue, once poured in, won't. The behaviour is not at all like diesel's.

It drops, since it is heavier than diesel, and settles down where the intake draws its fuel from.

The first thing your fuel system pulls through, after it runs, is the AdBlue. So a vehicle that had AdBlue poured in on a drive in Braintree Corner last night, and hasn't been started since, is still the straightforward case: the AdBlue is lying at the bottom of that tank, and nothing has drawn it in.

It does two kinds of damage from there.

As its water goes, the urea left behind crystallises, and the crystals block filters and settle in fine passages. And it is corrosive to some of the metals a fuel system is made from, and so it keeps running on the parts it reaches for as long as it remains there.

A car left standing around Gosfield with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue just in its tank is not.

Then there's the water: it brings no protection to the parts that need it most — the high-pressure pump and every injector.

## Petrol or AdBlue in a diesel: why AdBlue is frequently worse

Top up a diesel with petrol by mistake at the Esso, and the issue is thinned fuel.

Harm just comes from driving on it. Mixed into the diesel and left inside that tank, it does nothing.

The issue with AdBlue in a diesel is a completely unsuitable liquid.

It does not burn, so it cannot just be run through.

It does not stay mixed, so it cannot be thinned. And crystals and corrosion do not wash out with the next tank of fuel. That's why the flush matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, and why starting the motor "to see" costs more here than almost anywhere else, whether the car is in Cobbs Fenn or the middle of Gosfield.

With AdBlue, the good news is no distinct from petrol.

Clearing a tank is the easiest job on any fuel system, and with no running, the AdBlue stays in it — wherever in Essex the car has stopped.

## How does AdBlue end up in a diesel tank around Gosfield?

No one means to do it. The AdBlue filler on many motors rests right next to the diesel filler, at times under the same flap, and the two caps can look alike in poor light.

Most of the time it occurs with a bottle bought on the way home and poured in on the driveway, not at the forecourt.

Mostly, it happens in one of a couple of familiar ways.

The refill gets rushed outside Gosfield Community Primary School, because the dash lit up with a warning while the kids were dropped off.

After work, a container goes in on a driveway near The Street.

Or a driver unfamiliar with that flap refills the car in dim light, stopped in the car park by The Kings Head.

Rented motors, brand-new motors, fleet cars, or the second vehicle in a home with one of each: the least known cars see it most.

Wherever you are in Gosfield or the rest of Essex, it's the same slip and the same first answer: leave it off.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank in Gosfield, and the engine started?

The AdBlue has left that tank, then.

Your filter and pipework have had it sucked along, and any running time takes it on to the high-pressure pump and every injector.

Lumpy running, smoke from the exhaust, lost power, dashboard warnings or cutting out: each might appear, perhaps midway across Gosfield or coming back from Gosfield Lake Resort.

Stop when safe. Turn off. Keep the car off instead of testing it again.

More of it is pulled through with each start.

Gosfield lies under 25 miles from the M11; if you were on it, leave by the next junction and stop safely instead of carrying on.

How far it went matters. A couple of hundred yards across Gosfield to the car park by Saint Catherines is a very different job from a run towards Colchester, under 15 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into the system with each mile.

About how far it had come is worth telling us.

There is more to rinse out once your engine has run, and we do all of it where your car has come to a stop.

Lasting damage is very unusual when it is noticed early.

## What draining AdBlue from a diesel involves in Gosfield

Anywhere it has come to rest around Gosfield — a forecourt, a lay-by, a driveway, a road beside Empire — the van travels to your vehicle.

Three answers shape the work, and so before anything else our technicians ask what got in, about the amount, and if your engine has run.

Then that tank is drained where the car stands, so the contaminated fuel and the AdBlue come out together.

Residue from AdBlue won't flush out unaided, so the whole system gets a careful flush, which counts much more with urea than with petrol.

Next, your filter: cleaned, or changed if it has to be. After that fresh diesel, then a check of your car.

If your engine has not run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once our technicians are there.

Explosion-proof pumps make a busy forecourt sensible to work on, and they're quiet enough to spare the neighbours at night.

Last, the system is bled with clean diesel.

Whether it's a parking space by Braintree or a driveway in Gosfield, that is where our engineers fire it up and you head off.

It is tested on fresh diesel to make sure it runs smoothly before our technicians go.

Since the job is done in full where the vehicle is, a workshop never comes into it.

The insurer is likely to want an engineer's report and your VAT invoice — both yours once this job is done.

## About Gosfield itself

Gosfield is a village in Essex, situated on the riverside at an elevation of 71 metres, with detached housing being the predominant type of accommodation. Gosfield lies near the villages of Whiteash Green and Southey Green, and is close to the town of Halstead. Gosfield is located 13.5 miles from Colchester and 42.8 miles from London, making it a rural community with easy access to larger urban areas. Gosfield has a population of approximately 945 residents.

## AdBlue drains across Gosfield and Essex

Whiteash Green, Southey Green and Halstead are among the places around Gosfield that the same teams reach, along with most of Essex beyond, over the CO postcode area.

Phone and ask instead of guessing if you are by a border, or somewhere awkward to pin down.

Wherever your car sits — your drive at home, a residential street, a parking area, a forecourt — we empty it there, and there's no need to take it to us; which suits Gosfield, a village, well.

## What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right in Gosfield

Every job differs, so no fixed price would be fair.

Whether your engine has been running, and for how long, comes first in what moves the cost. How much AdBlue was put in comes next, and then the position of the vehicle, because an open drive is simpler for our van to reach safely than a tight gap behind Halstead War Memorial.

Ahead of a figure, never after, every enquiry from Gosfield opens with three questions: the liquid, the quantity, plus if the engine ran.

When they are answered, a range becomes a single firm number.

Before a van heads out, you are told the price on the phone. Then you pay on the day, by card or by phone, with nothing upfront.

As the van is travelling, check your policy: plenty include misfuelling.

## Gosfield: still beside the car?

Leaving the vehicle alone is, right now, the most useful move you can do.

Keys out, engine off, ignition off.

Tell us it was AdBlue, about how big an amount, and whether it ran, on 0333 366 0103. From there Petrol in Diesel takes over, in Gosfield or anywhere in Essex.
