# Graigwen: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Leave It Off

Motor off, ignition off: that's how you begin if AdBlue has got into the diesel tank.

Urea mixed in water is what AdBlue is.

Unlike fuel, it neither ignites nor mixes, and no harm happens until your engine pulls it round.

Caught before the engine has been run, AdBlue in a diesel tank is usually a drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is around Graigwen.

Before you do anything else, ring 0333 366 0103.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank around Graigwen: the first few minutes

To do:

- Pull the keys out, and so nobody switches your ignition on.

- Near moving traffic? So put the hazard lights on.

- The empty bottle or the till receipt shows us the fluid and the amount, so do not throw it away.

- The van locates you fastest with a postcode starting CF37 2, or simply the name of a street close by, and so phone from the car.

Don't:

- No starting your engine — not briefly, not to reposition the car.

- Don't switch your ignition on. On plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

- No more fuel added. The AdBlue won't mix, and so it is pointless.

- Any driving at all is to be avoided, including a short distance up Llwynmadoc Street.

- No emptying it yourself, at all, on the verge.

The staff working at any Graigwen filling station — the Asda among them — will normally help rolling it clear if you ask.

On your own drive, do not move it at all.

## What AdBlue does in a diesel tank

AdBlue is made for your exhaust, not the engine.

Kept in a separate tank, it is injected into the exhaust to clean the gases.

Nothing inside a fuel pump is made for this fluid — and no part of that was meant to travel through one.

Inside a diesel tank it acts very differently from fuel. It doesn't mix in.

It drops, because it is denser than diesel, and pools low where the intake takes its fuel from.

The first thing your fuel system pulls through, once it runs, is the AdBlue. So a car that had AdBlue poured in on a drive in Pantygraig Wen last night, and has not been started since, is still the straightforward case: the AdBlue is lying at the bottom of that tank, and nothing has sucked it in.

It does two kinds of damage from there.

What remains when the water goes is urea, which forms crystals: they lodge in tiny channels and block filters. On top of that, it eats at certain metals in the fuel system, and keeps going until it is flushed out.

A motor left sitting around Graigwen with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue just in its tank is not.

The water in it causes harm of its own: your high-pressure pump and the injectors rely on diesel to lubricate them, and water offers them nothing.

## Why AdBlue in a diesel is often more significant than petrol

Fill a diesel with petrol in error over at the Sainsbury's, and the issue is diluted fuel.

It mixes with your diesel, and while it's inside your tank it causes no harm; the harm comes from running the motor on it.

The issue with AdBlue in a diesel is a completely unsuitable liquid.

Not burning, it cannot just be run through.

Whether the vehicle sits in Trallwn or the heart of Graigwen, turning it over "to see" costs more with AdBlue than nearly any other slip, and the flush counts for more. The reasons: it will not stay blended, and so watering it down fails; and crystals and corrosion survive the following tankful.

The good news is the same as with petrol.

Never started? Then the AdBlue waits just inside your tank, the easiest section of the entire system to empty, wherever your car has stopped in Rhondda Cynon Taf.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank around Graigwen: how it ends up there

It's not on purpose. Many cars have the AdBlue cap beside the diesel one, now and then under one flap, and muddling them up is easy in poor light.

Mostly it happens with a bottle bought on the way home and poured in on the drive, not at the pump.

Usually, it occurs in one of a couple of familiar ways.

A warning light comes on during the school run, and the top-up happens in a hurry outside the local primary school.

Near Pencerrig Street, a driver pours a container in on the drive after work.

Else, after dark by The Merlin, the car is topped up by a driver using that flap for the first time.

It takes place most in the motors drivers know least: a hire car, a new motor, a company car, or the second motor of a household with one diesel and one petrol.

An identical mistake, same first response — leave it switched off — wherever you happen to be around Graigwen or the rest of Rhondda Cynon Taf.

## Graigwen: started the engine with AdBlue in your diesel tank?

Then the AdBlue has left your tank.

With any running time, it goes on to the injection pump and every injector, after passing via your filter and lines.

Expect rough running, smoke, lost power, lights on the dash, or a cut-out — returning from Ynysangharad Park, say, or midway across Graigwen.

Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and don't restart the vehicle to check.

Each start pulls more of it through.

If you were on the M4, under 10 miles from Graigwen, come off at the next exit and stop somewhere sensible rather than pressing on.

A quick hop across Graigwen to the car park by Indoor Bowls Centre is one thing; driving for Cardiff, under 15 miles away, is another, because every mile carries the AdBlue deeper in. So mileage counts.

About how far it had come is worth telling us.

Wherever the vehicle came to a halt is where all of it gets done, even with more to rinse out once your engine has been running.

When it's caught quickly, permanent damage is very unusual.

## What does an AdBlue drain on a diesel involve around Graigwen?

The car remains put, whether that is a road near Pontypridd RFC, a driveway, a lay-by or a forecourt in Graigwen, and our van comes to it.

Before anything else our technicians ask what was put in, roughly how much, and if the engine has been run, since those answers settle this work.

Right there, your tank is then drained, and both the contaminated diesel and the urea come out as one.

What remains from AdBlue won't flush out by itself, so the fuel system gets a careful flush, which counts far more here than with petrol.

Next, the fuel filter: cleaned, or replaced if it must be. Then clean diesel, then a check of your vehicle.

Roughly half an hour on site is typical for most jobs when the engine has not run.

The pumps are explosion-proof, safe on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night.

New diesel goes in to prime your system, and that's the final step.

After that our engineers start the engine and you set off, whether from a parking bay outside Pontypridd or a drive around Graigwen.

Before we go, our engineers check it's running smoothly with new diesel in.

We do it all wherever your car has stopped, and it never has to be taken to a garage.

The insurer will want an engineer's report and the VAT invoice — both yours afterwards.

Graigwen is a suburban area situated on the riverside in Rhondda Cynon Taf, with a mix of terraced housing and local amenities. Graigwen sits at an elevation of 103 metres, close to the nearby communities of Penygraigwen and Pwll-Gwaun. Graigwen is located near the town of Pontypridd and is approximately 11 miles from Cardiff, the capital city of Wales. Graigwen has a population of around 5346 residents.

## AdBlue drains around Graigwen and across Rhondda Cynon Taf

AdBlue jobs in Graigwen are passed to vans that serve the towns near it — Penygraigwen, Pwll-Gwaun plus Pontypridd — and most of Rhondda Cynon Taf beyond, across CF postcodes.

Guessing won't help by a border or somewhere hard to describe; ring and check.

Graigwen is a residential suburb, and an on-site drain suits it: whether your car is on a home drive, a residential street, a car park or a forecourt, our engineers drain it where it stands, so it never needs to be shifted to us.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank in Graigwen: the cost of fixing it

There's no fair single price, because the jobs aren't the same.

Three things shift the price: whether the engine has run and for how long, how much AdBlue went in, and where your car is. That last one rests on whether our van can reach it safely, and an open driveway is simpler than a tight gap behind Muni Arts Centre.

Ahead of a quote, not after, each enquiry from Graigwen begins with three checks: the fuel, the quantity, and whether it ran.

The answers turn a range into a straight price.

Before a van heads out, you are told the price by phone. Then payment is on the day, by card or over the phone, with nothing in advance.

As our engineer is travelling, check your insurance: many cover misfuelling.

## Next to your car in Graigwen, right now?

Not touching the car is, right now, the most useful thing you can do.

Keys out, motor off, ignition off.

Call 0333 366 0103 then tell us it's AdBlue, about how much, and whether it has run. Petrol in Diesel takes it from there, in Graigwen or anywhere in Rhondda Cynon Taf.
